A lot of the people at my uni wear North Face jackets. I'm planning to get a new winter jacket soon. Should I just get one from North Face as well? What brands would you guys recommend?

It never gets really cold were I live. I see people using those sometimes and have no idea why or if they are actually comfortable with them. I think that even with a t-shirt underneath that would be too hot for my city in the winter.
What are they going to do when they enter a warm place, just use the t-shirt? The heating indoors is set to a temperature that they expect you to have more clothes on. Layers is better because you can add and subtract.

yeah I don't get why zoomers wear puffy down jackets outside of winter. I don't bring mine out unless it's like -5 degrees celsius at least. it's very useful for those -15 days though, I usually wear it layered with a thick wool turtleneck at that kind of weather

>>17327206
Layering is good for outdoors activities, but for regular city life its just kinda dumb. You're either in a heated building or outside. Most challenging environment you will face is a cold car that warms up. Nobody wants to take of 3 layers of clothing when they sit to a restaurant table or go to work. Just put on regular clothing and warm anough jacket. If you're hiking in the cold then sure, do the whole base layer, mid layer if needed, shell, and a belay parka in the backpack routine.

got my second of these at the end of last winter on clearance. when i got the first one i just wanted the scott pilgrim jacket, had no clue about alpha or anything until a hypebeast kid at school leaned over class and said awestruck "is that an ALPHA INDUSTRIES JACKET?"
was good enough to get a second anyway. first one lasted me 5 or 6 years and finally started to break down ever so slightly so decided to replace while they were on sale. gave the old one to my buddy who needed a jacket.

I just got one of Depop (Ellesse) for like £30 but I've heard good things about mountain hardwear puffers like picrel - don't think they make them anymore though so good luck finding one used.
Otherwise North Face Nuptse is expensive but will probably outlast it's value, 2nd hand prices are so high you may aswell buy a new one (or wait till next summer when people are selling).
Moncler and canada goose are good but really cringe imo, as is Pyrenex (sorry >>17328140) but that may depend on where you live since here in UK i'm pretty sure they sell them at JD Sports etc. so kinda chavvy.

Buy a down jacket instead of synthetic if you live somewhere cold and reasonably dry.
Synthetic insulation degrades over time where down doesn't.
Arc'teryx down jackets are shit though - they mix down and synthetic and I'm not even sure they do a boxwall down jacket.

I want to be this warm but I want it to be made of wool because I don’t want microplastics in my blood.

What should I get? I have a wool pea coat but I need something simpler/more rugged for outdoor work

Bought this Suokeni brand ski jacket/coat (in black) with zip-off hood from Amazon for $70 back in 2020 and have been very happy with it and just got another one in dark grey for only $53. Good coat for a good price.

I have this. Used in Norway. Bad for wind though. You'd need a wind stopper or some sort of shell on top for the harsher days. That, or you can layer many layers of wools like I did. Still doesn't stop the worst winds though.
Protip, whatever your layering system, something that stops the wind is important. Eg. if you're in Northern Greece, a lot of those winds can be really cold coming from Russia, the sort of cold that pierces. You'd need a shell. Whereas midwestern continental Europe isn't necessarily that rough.

Not going to happen from the tiniest amount of skin exposure. Wool coats use synthetic liner anyway. The real danger with microplastics is in some makeup & lotions (mostly women's products). There is probably more in everything that you eat throughout the day than will ever absorb through your skin. Anything that "absorbs through your skin" from clothing would be completely negligible.

check out swanndri of nz.

https://www.swanndri.co.nz/mens/bushshirts.html

most of the bushshirts are 100% wool outer then it's like 50% wool - 50% polyester partial lining inside.
the wool is treated to repel water.

$288 nzd would be like $176 USD.
