Are duffel coats preppy? I feel like they fit the vibe even if they aren't traditional

Was it ever in danger of dying? I come here whenever I have questions and always get decent answers. I think the tricky thing is keeping prep fresh because it relies so heavily on tradition and trusted brands. At the same time if you want to pull of a preppy style in your day to day life, you need to find the right balance between dressing preppy but still within the range of what's generally acceptable in your social circle (unless you want to make your style your personality)

That is a more casual polo. Plenty of brands will do that, especially for the summer, I've noticed, even though it's counterintuitive; you'd think a summer shirt should unbutton more to allow the chest to breathe more.

Hey mate, if this is a serious post, here's some feedback.

My biggest gripe with this fit is the shirt. Firstly, the colour of the shirt does not seem to match very well with the colour of the jacket. Maybe a jacket that leans more toward brown than grey would work better, to reduce the contrast. Secondly, the collar looks too big; it's crumpling around your neck. Thirdly, the shirt sleeve may be a bit too short, but how much cuff you want to show is up to you, I think. For the rest of this post, I'm going to imagine that you've swapped out your current shirt for a white, well-fitted OCBD, with the same jacket.

The next issue I have with the fit is the tie knot. It's a bit small compared to the shirt collar. Perhaps you did a Continental? I would recommend a four in hand or a half windsor, depending on height and tie length. The tie fabric/pattern I am actually fine with (given you are wearing a white OCBD, as above).

Finally, I would make the pocket square plain, white and linen. This is because your tie is already very "noisy": it has a small pattern AND a big pattern on top of it. This, in my opinion, makes it difficult to combine with other patterns. Also, your jacket already seems like it has a prince of wales check, which you can probably get away with, but your current pocket square is a bit much for my taste.

I haven't seen the show, but looking at the fits, I see what you were going for. Guess this just shows just how long a way fit, quality and face go.

dress shirt?

It's like it's impossible to find a shirt that meets all of these criteria. I thought about Paul Frederick but some online reviews say that they don't hold up very well after a couple washes

Or is it time to just buy some cheapo polyester shirts from Van Heusen or Walmart and never be comfortable?

Picrel is me. I am so tired of looking.

For me the things you could do to better your fit are:
1 - crumple your handkerchief a bit
2 - take the tie clip off
3 - the colors are not too bad, but I think you need a bit of colour. Try a more colourful tie or handkerchief.

That's all. Remember that elegance is NEVER perfection, if you are too tidy you'll look like an american trying to be elegant. Always have some sprezzatura in your clothing, be it a tie that's not perfectly symmetrical, something unbuttoned or uneven, some bold color choices that look like errors but are actually conscious choices. Buona fortuna!

the point is that if you are all perfectly tidy, perfectly set etc. you inevitably look uncomfortable. The point is to look perfctly at ease, and so you need to learn to give the right weight to details, meaning not too much of it. Elegance IS in the details, but the real elegance happens when they look seamlessky integrated in the whole, natural and comfortable. You must learn the rules first, and then learn to go your way with them in mind. If you follow them you look like a mannequin, if you don't know them you risk looking like an ignorant. It's just like in classical music, everyone studies harmony and counterpoint, with iron rules and forbidden note progression, just to learn that every composer broke those rules for creative intent, with purpose. Yes you're right they're a tad too wide in the shoulders. I have a list of various "add 1cm here, remove 1cm there" going for next shirt. anyone know where I can get high waisted dress pants? that are cotton or wool

I already have a massive list, spier and mackay, cavor, armoury, berle. those ones are not the style I am looking for, I cant describe it but they are too textury? and ostentatious? in a way. Im looking for more lowkey simple pattern, high waisted, either gray or black.

pic related. and also straight leg too, not slim, everything is fucking slim

This has probably been asked a billion times but, where the shit can I find a tennis/cricket jumper or just American style prep/ivy clothes at all in Europe, that won't completely fuck me in the ass in price + import fee + tax + tip, but also aren't cheap asos shit?

I've tried all the brands in the OP, and all of the more preppy or ivy style brands like LL bean, nautica, etc, don't even sell a quarter of the products their original US counterparts do. And ralph lauren's extremely overpriced for bangladesh slave labour crap, even if it looks nice.

Other options I've found are jcrew and brooks brothers which are overpriced here too, without any of the discounts the former's known for, and abercrombie and fitch cashing in on the ALD hype, which I won't even bother with as it's shit.

As for European brands, I'm just left with barbour and massimo dutti style things which just aren't as visually "fun" even if they have their place,

Tl;dr I prefer stuff much like pic related and it's a style I'm finding really difficult to find stuff like in Yurope without being raped by import fees and taxes. In case anyone goes to say it, thrifting also isn't really an option because there isn't an established past of preppy/ivy stuff like this in my country either, so does anyone know?

Literally nobody but sprezz autists will look at somebody wearing his clothes correctly and think "he looks like a mannequin." The TIP look is already nonchalant. You wear soft OCBDs instead of starched spread collar shirts, loafers that just slip on, etc. You just throw the stuff on like its no big deal. What you're proposing is standing in front of the mirror for hours and doing little things wrong on purpose to seem like a homosexual Italian's idea of nonchalant, and the end result is that you, with your unbuttoned OCBD collar, missed belt loop, unbuckled monkstrap, etc. just look like a sloppy idiot who can't dress himself.

I agree. People go over the top with Sprezzatura. The reality is most people aren't going to see the intentional sartorial errors you've made and think it's cool or nonchalant, you're just going to look like a spaz who can't dress properly. It's quite pretentious to spend a great deal of your time trying to look like you didn't bother or spend any time at all, it's absolute ponce behaviour. Just dress properly and you can throw in a few bolder choices or a statement piece, no need to wear a watch over your jacket sleeve or anything like that.

I think the whole sprezzatura thing is completely null and void by the simple fact that you're wearing classic menswear at all.
The idea is supposed to be that you look elegant without trying, that you're just effortlessly good looking. This doesn't work with classic menswear because nobody wears suits anymore. Even if you're just tucking in your shirt you are immediately noticed as trying.

The closest thing to true sprezzatura would be something like pic related. It's what everyone else wears.. but it's cleaner, better cut, but without looking too tryhard. You look at this person and it's hard to make the argument of:
>he's obviously had these clothes tailored and goes to great effort to keep his sneakers clean, and great effort to maintain that stubble and messy haircut that still looks good
Even though that probably is the case.. it looks natural and effortless
