finally pooped into my AD today and took a look at the recent yachtmaster, finding it surprisingly more slim and delicate than i had expected; almost to the point where i thought it effeminate
that aside, it was also a lot more tasteful than one can tell from publicity shots, the black and gold pairing while not muted, is certainly nowhere near as garish as the stills might lead one to believe
as it stands, i'm somewhat in two minds about the piece and will have to consider whether it's worth picking up

To my understanding it's all about not being corrupted by money and material possessions. Making sure the thing you own don't own you. Lets say you have a watch (luxury or not) and someone less fortunate asks you for it (with a knife or not), are you able to part with it? If you can't let go of material things you are corrupted and can't belong to anything other than money and the material world. I have literally gifted cheaper watches right off my wrist multiple times. It wouldn't be as easy for my more expensive watches but I like to think that I would gladly give them up to for the right person. Personally I try to live a life with minimal possessions and I would recommend it. The more you have the harder it is to give it up. I'm not perfect. I do get attached to certain things and I'm trying to improve. I think it's only natural to seek safety and security in physical things but it's important to know that they are not forever and be able to let go at any time. I don't think I'm the kind who things I don't need to worry about anything since that all will be provided, that's a bit much for me. I like to care for my basic needs.

The current top-tier clone movements found in a decent $650~$700 USD rep of a sub or 41mm datejust uses a VR3135 OR VR3235 movement. Essentially, the chinese factories have managed to clone a Rolex movement almost to 99% accuracy. The only missing part that would allow it to run perfectly, aside from good oiling and decent clean assembly, would be the heart of the movement, the balance wheel. How much would it cost for a genuine Rolex one, if found through some channel/supplier selling it in individual quantities? Picrel

In all fairness, there is little room for margins, if any profits at all in vintage Omega's and the likes. As soon as you avoid (certain) vintage Rolex and vintage Panerai, you're more or less in the clear. (ie: Daytona's and Subs + All Panerai's with 6497's)

If someone refurbed what was basically a dead $500 watch that had an ETA movement with a $100 PT5000 (ETA clone), it's fair game, as long as it's just a good clone movement, and you parts are working as intended. No big value loss and big harm done. There's also bad frankens with old Seiko's being painted and slapped together in India, the occasional Oris or Orient that somehow slips into someone's dirty hands there. Sometimes, there's grifters painting over some naasty dial to make up some non-existent colourway, etc...

The worst of it really affects high-value stuff, and not much else. I'd point to the whole vintage Rolex GMT Master drama that happened with the made up "blueberry bezel" that some chucklefuck made up and conned collectors into believing a few years back lmao

FYI Tag’s new movement director is the woman responsible for turning Cartier watchmaking from a pretty weak etablisseur in the 90s to the juggernaut they are today, including leading the development of multiple Geneva seal watches.
