/btg/ - BOOT GENERAL - BOUNTY HUNTERS EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
no
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day.

I've been wearing a pair of Redwing Supersoles for work for about 18 months now. This week, I've noticed that my little toe has made a good bit of progress rubbing a hole in both boots.

They should have been sized correctly. The machine in the store suggested a range of 9.5, 10, 10.5, D width. I got 10D because that was the size where I couldn't make my toes reach the end of the toe box no matter how hard I shoved and stayed with D because it was snug but not tight or difficult to get my foot in and out.

What causes this? I am legitimately using these boots for work, walking between 2 and 10 miles per day in them 7 days a week, usually carrying shit, up and down steep hills. Do I just need to go wider next time? Could my very thick cotton socks be hurting them? Or is it just that I beat the absolute shit out of them? I do take care of them. Shoe trees when I'm not wearing them, and they get cleaned and rubbed down with Huberd's shoe grease twice per week, more often if they get particularly dirty or if it's raining.

feet tend to splay over the course of the day especially when wearing cushion boots as the synthetic insole collapses under weight. there is a reason why boots are traditionally constructed with thick oak tanned leather insole.

>7 days a week
please rotate your footwear. they need time to dry out properly and this constant wear is only leading to an early demise

>and they get cleaned and rubbed down with Huberd's shoe grease twice per week

When I say cleaned I mean with a moist rag, dried, and then given a coat on grease. I'm not cleaning them with soap or leather cleaner that often. I don't see how frequent applications of grease will hurt leather.

You are conditioning way too often and your boots are going to come apart and rot. I do a cleaning and oiling with saddle soap and venetian shoe cream every 1-2 months, otherwise I just brush them with a horsehair brush. This is pretty much what most people recommend unless you're doing particular dirty or rough stuff in them.

You should use leather dye (I think Saphir sells the kit) and use serious gloves because that stuff is really nasty.

Black dye will asolutely overpower everything so if it's on black boots I think you can make it work, but if it's on any other type of color you are going to cause a mess.
The lining is designed to absorb moisture so it will absorb the dye very easily I imagine. Not sure if that will make it less absorbing though.

ready made and ready to ship? i don't think so
truman boots has the upland boot 8inch, built to order 6-8 weeks, if you consider that look close enough, only comes on lugged soles and the toe isn't as bulbous, the one in java waxed flesh is pretty cool, check out how that leather ages
if you want the closest look possible you have to go custom nicks boots, wesco or white's(through bakers)
nick's americana is almost identical in shape and the predator orange leather is almost identical to copper rough and tough on red wing, but they only offer them in 6 inch standard, you can either custom configure the officer boot for example with cap toe, block heel, no speedhooks in 10 inch or you can shoot them an email that you want the americana in 10 inch
the wesco warren with boss toes looks the same but only comes on logger heels

I don't like their lasts which is too bad because the boots themselves are really good. Truman had a rough early couple of years as they figured everything out and got the company going but it's been smooth sailing the past few years and they make a great boot. I just don't like any of their designs
My main gripe is their rounder toe shapes combined with their cap toes which look just a hair too short. If they had longer cap toes and a sleeker toe I'd absolutely get a pair

They’re ok for the price as a dressy cowboy boot. I recommend finding a store near you to inspect the boots before purchasing since there seems to be a rise in qc issues. On my most recent pair I’ve had to exchange a few til I found one that I felt was acceptable. Customer service is pretty good though and once you find a “perfect” pair they’re not too bad. Do GYW shoes feel comfortable for you out of the box?

My most comfortable shoes felt oversized when I first put them on. I thought it's one size too long, or too wide.

Is this the trick? They must feel a little bit too large at first?

>> No.17230894

>>17230885
Most GYW shoes typically run large, so half size down is usually a good idea. Obviously trying on in person is best but it's not always possible
And yeah they're usually pretty stiff at first. Leather takes time to soften up and break in and a GYW shoe especially due to the construction, but typically once broken in they're extremely comfortable since leather molds to the foot

>Is this the trick? They must feel a little bit too large at first?
yeah kinda. the conventional advice is for it to be borderline tight when you just put it on but I disagree. it shouldn't "hug" you at the start of the day because you'll expand into it during the day
also the heel to ball is just as if not more important and that's where you start getting into the relationships between lengths and widths to find a size

The only shoes I own that felt "tight" when I put them on are my Rain last Carminas.
The heel is gigantic, the instep is good (high) but then the toe area width is non-existent.

At first I thought "well these are tight but that's what everyone says"
Eventually I realized that when I walk and the shoe bends, the crease just digs into my feet because it's so tight.

Never again.

I will never understand how people can fit into the Rain last, or why it's so popular. It does look sleek to be honest, and I get a lot of compliments when I wear them.
Also, Carmina did warn me not to buy them and to either go for the EEE version or a different last. But I was stupid and wanted my black captoe oxfords to be narrow and stylish. I even asked about the Simpson last and they flat out told me no.

What I struggle to understand is who has a foot combination that fits a gigantic heel, high instep and narrow toebox.

Anyway mine stopped the heel slip after wearing them 3-4 times, they still hurt a bit if I walk a lot in them.
I wore them at a wedding a few weeks ago, thankfully the parking lot, the church and the party venue were next to each other.

To be fair heel slipping usually goes away when a sole breaks in. New soles are stiff as fuck and don't flex when you walk so the heel just slips inside until the sole softens
But yeah, huge heels are retarded and I don't know why companies do it.

autist meme, they are fine for their price. The thing that makes the company unlikeable and the root of the hate here is that they pretend their boots are massively underpriced for their top quality, while they are just decent gyw boots for 200$ bucks. I personally like their models as well, I just find the heel a bit too high and it kinda ruins the shape. If the heel was shorter I'd cop a pair.

No. being leather shoes they should feel slightly undersized out of the box and then the footbed will compress and the leather will stretch a bit as the break in.

if they feel correctly sized or oversized out of the box then when they break in they will be too loose.
