I prefer the Reverso but the Santos can go from sport to dressy with a different strap (it's also automatic).

Another thing that seems odd is how Bulgari, Chopard and Piaget are in 3 different categories despite being direct competitors (ie high end jewelry brands with a small watch line starting at around 12k).

>> No.17228639

What puts Rolex where it is are two factors: 1. the fact that they have consistently made one of the best three (four) hands watch for quite a lot of years now, with very resilient and well made movements, excellent materials, and quality cases. And 2. they are the most known brand of luxury watches in the world.
I don't really like Rolex and their business model and their aura, but it's true, it's true.

>> No.17228643

>>17228637
Bvlgari had to but GG and DR in order to get credibility as a high-end maker of watches. Chopard is obviously above them, but they are not prestige-wise as developed as Piaget (Mille Miglia is a stain Chopard can't afford to erase) and Piaget is clearly more technologically advanced that Chopard. Plus, Piaget is more expensive and "exclusive".

It also doesn't help that different brands produce a wide range of products.
A lot of Piaget ARE ultra-luxury products, but the steel Polo is utter crap with a Cartier movement.
Cartier makes a steel, quartz powered Tank, no better or worse than the Seiko that copies it.
JLC makes quartz Reversos and basic, 3-hand steel watches but also ridiculously luxurious, super high-end pieces.

Then there’s also the guys who like to buy expensive watches which are low-key or obscure because they crave the gentle caress of a neck beard on a watch forum. Depends on the Rolex imo but let’s agree at mostly true? They feel special to wear and I enjoy them. Still tho wouldn’t say the dudes wearing vintage Rolexes, explorer 2, Milgauss, are in the same boat as the dudes who buy subs, Daytonas, or GMT II.

I own a few and I just like them. So many people are mad about Rolex and it’s because of the ADs and the flexers who post their luxury car steering wheel. I got lucky enough to afford to have two, I’m not rich or better than anyone else, and I like that I can sell for close to what I purchased them for and their liquidity when my taste inevitably changes to something more low-key or esoteric.

There's not really anything that I see within your price range. Citizen BM8180-03E is pretty good but out of your budget. Bertucci is good but doesn't have your strap size. If this is your budget fo watches I imagine your straps aren't very expensive. It wouldn't be a big deal to get one strap at whatever size.

Just say to them that they know nothing about watches (it's the truth). When i first got interested in watches i found almost all of them ugly. My tastes have softened somewhat since then, i still find most of them ugly, but i have come to the realization that tastes in watches vary so much that it doesn't matter at all in the end, what matters is that you like and enjoy wearing the watch and that it makes you feel good.
