A lot of Piaget ARE ultra-luxury products, but the steel Polo is utter crap with a Cartier movement.
Cartier makes a steel, quartz powered Tank, no better or worse than the Seiko that copies it.
JLC makes quartz Reversos and basic, 3-hand steel watches but also ridiculously luxurious, super high-end pieces.

Just say to them that they know nothing about watches (it's the truth). When i first got interested in watches i found almost all of them ugly. My tastes have softened somewhat since then, i still find most of them ugly, but i have come to the realization that tastes in watches vary so much that it doesn't matter at all in the end, what matters is that you like and enjoy wearing the watch and that it makes you feel good.
