Just because it was mentioned last thread: watch manufacturers DO replace your whole movement, but they don't just throw it away. They replace it with another refurbished movement. Tudor definitely does this. Cartier & Omega do this on some models. Rolex...probably does it but it's hard to tell. If your watch is cheaper than Tudor, they almost certainly throw your old movement in the trash. You can look it up on the Rolex forums if you want to see Tudor owners seething over it. I'm not sure about brands like JLC or GS where you start to get into more delicate finishing, complications, and much lower volume of sales. Obviously as you get lower numbers of watches back for service the less viable this becomes as opposed to servicing it traditionally.

Full on replacement and throwing away movements is an inevitability, even for luxury brands. There simply isn't enough professionals to go around, and therefore replacing the entire movement which is probably mass-produced in part or in whole in China is more cost effective and reasonable than waiting months in backorders for someone to repair it by hand. It's probably already happening, and is just not disclosed.

They have all these great designs from the 30s to the early 70s in their catalogue, but they completely ignore them.

Bought this seiko. My first automatic watch that i bought with my own money. Had it for about a month so far and I absolutely love it. It runs a little fast and the crystal scratched in like a day. So i plan to take it to a jeweler to replace it with sapphire crystal and see if they can make it run a little more accurately, but other than that I really love it. No, they really aren't.

The people who complain about vintage watches being finicky are the guys who bought a vintage whatever out of India for 200 bucks back when they started getting into watches and thought "vintage" was a cheap way to get into the brands they really wanted but couldn't afford. They ended up with some half-working franken that fell apart. Rather than admit they just got taken, they tell themselves a story about how vintage watches are fragile.

I've had a Datejust from the late 1980s and now I have a modern Explorer. It's night and day in terms of robustness and daily use.
I agree that watch designs peaked in the 60s, but modern watches are far more resistant to chocs and magnetic fields. Steel bracelets and clasps are infintly better and feel more substantial.

Reeditions of old models are the way to go but they have to be made thoughtfully. IMO Rolex got it right with the 2021 Explorer, I wish they had the same design philosophy with the Sub and the GMT Master. The new Breitling Navitimer is also (almost) perfect.

I asked /diy/ but perhaps this is a better place to ask:
I'd like to purchase a Bulova Computron watch. The problem is that these LED watches only display the time when a button is pressed, making it a two hand operation. Is it possible, either DIY or by paying a jeweller, to modify the watch to constantly display the time? Obviously this would effect battery life, I hope that there is a new, lithium battery the same size as the original that would mitigate this problem.

>I find all the complaints about vintage watches (or even modern dress watches) are all just "what happens if..." questions that are completely divorced from reality.

I used to be much more into sports watches when I was younger. My collection was basically just divers and sports chronographs. I wouldn't touch anything that didn't have AT LEAST 100m of water resistance with a screw-down crown.
Then, of course, I realized that when I do anything remotely sporty, skiing, hiking, camping, sailing, etc. I'm wearing a G-Shock or a Garmin.

Pic related is my daily watch. It's thinner, lighter, and far classier than some beefed-up diver that can go 1000m under water.

Can someone explain Omega's design choice to me?
What's the purpose on fauxtina lume on this? Makes no sense, the Diver 300 is a modern design and the case is in titanium. It looks like this watch is trying to be super modern and vintage at the same time.
Also I don't think James Bond would be wearing a watch with the "007" logo engraved on the back.

The Seiko 5 snk805 is the first automatic and real watch I've ever bought years ago. I quickly upgraded to other watches, before going back to it and it is now currently my daily. Why? Perfect size for my small wrist, has lume thay lasts through the night, something that much more expensive watches don't achieve, 3atm water resistance, never had an issue wearing it in a pool, which is all the swimming I'll ever done. I've regulated accuracy to +5 a day. I just can't justify paying more than $100 for a watch now.
Call it poor fag cope all u want.

Nah. Omega is the definitive cope brand. You buy one because it's the only logical thing to do when you've given up on buying a Rolex. Literally every Omega owners I know wanted a Rolex in the first place but decided to settle the second best option, and are incredibly self conscious about their watch.

Tudor is obvioulsy marketed towards younger men. You buy one when you're 25 in order to get a taste of that Rolex you'll buy in 5 or 10 years. It acts as a reminder to stay focused on your objectives and never give up.

A 25 years old guy with a Tudor gives positive vibes (humble and ambitious).
A 30 years old guy with an Omega gives negative vibes (impatient and salty).

You're the retard every ad man on this planet dreams of. Omega is just another entry level Swiss brand, but at least they have unique history and designs in their books, whereas Tudor is literally nothing but an homage to the real thing. There's nothing more hilarious than flexing my Rolex on an Omega owner. It's always the same reaction in their eyes, a mix or regret, rage and panic.
My favorite thing to do is tell them something like this
>oh I like Omega too but after trying a Rolex I knew it was the right brand for me... I'm currently thinking on my next watch and Omega has crossed my mind but I think I'll just buy another Rolex. Sure it's more expensive but who cares right?
