What was your first expensive watch?
For me it was the Bell & Ross Desert Type.
I think I've bought it in 2016 or something in a duty free store.
Sold it a few months later after realizing how retarded I was. What an ugly piece of shit.

sports is a bit of a catch-all term in watches, referring to anything from driving your car, playing golf, shooting pheasants or pretty much any leisure activity; so it's a casual watch you can wear while relaxing
you might compare that class to a 'dress' watch, usually referring to dressing for dinner in black-tie; or a 'tool' watch that has some functional aspect useful to work such as a diver

that being said, most modern watches tend to be something of a hybrid, because the fashion has changed to the idea of all watches being luxury goods with little relation to occasion or circumstance so you could see someone wearing a black-dialled diver with a tux, as readily as seeing a thin minimalist watch in the office

There’s also that in-between class that is neither and really has no name. Watches like the JLC Master line are generally too big/complicated for dress watches but aren’t nearly tough enough and too classy, for lack of a better term, to be sports watches.

>> No.17182275

yeah, don't worry man; there's a few guys who enjoy gatekeeping this stuff, but most of the terms can be defined with a quick search on duckduckgo, and you can also find out 'when' most of them were introduced, comparing that original usage to modern trends

Have you tried any luxury watches? For some reasons brands use 3D renders that look weird af, and online pictures are never representative of the actual product imo (proportions are always somewhat wrong).
>which watches are on your rotation now after you dumped the Desert, and where did you sell it ?
I think I sold the B&R on eBay. Also I've never owned more than 1 watch at the same time.
After selling the B&R I bought a second hand IWC Portuguese. Kept it 2 years, sold it and bought an Omega Aqua Terra in 2020. Then I sold it and now I have this Rolex Explorer, my only watch. The next one will be a Baltic bronze Aquascaphe that will be delivered late august. I also have a comfy budget for a third watch but I'm still torn between a Grand Seiko SBGW283 or a JLC Reverso. Also thinking of saving a bit more and buying a second hand Rolex GMT Master II (root beer from the early 2000s).

That's why they're 8-10k instead of $18-20k. Every watch in that price range has pretty serious compromises. I wouldn't buy a GS for their movement finishing. I wouldn't buy a JLC for their case finishing. I wouldn't buy a Rolex for their complications. The closest you can get to a watch that is good in every way at the lowest possible price would probably be some sort of Blancpain, but most of them are closer to the $14k figure than the $10k figure.

It really depends on the watch. If it's a brand that is often faked, they're pretty important. If you're given the choice between a watch with box/papers vs one without, it's always worth it to spend extra IMO. If you decide to sell it down the line, and there's a pretty decent chance you will, you'll more than make the money back anyway. Obviously if you never sell it then it doesn't matter as long as the watch is authentic.

This whole thing is a huge waste of money. Your groomsmen won't like the watches as much as they cost you, no matter what. If you were some shiek you'd get a bunch of gold datejusts and that'd be kino but people still wouldn't appreciate them as much as they cost you.

Meanwhile you're distracted from what's far more important than your wedding- your marriage. The more you spend on the wedding the more likely your marriage is shit and falls apart in 3-10 years. Hopefully you picked a good woman.

>A rough and tumble watch like the explorer shouldn't have soft metals like gold on it.
The Submariner and Sea Dweller have two tone (or even full gold) versions. It doesnt make more sense but Rolesor is a typical Rolex signature. All that matters is it looks good and the two tone Explorer is a beauty.
