>It just goes to show that just because a frag is “natural”
Essential parfums basically lies about their fragrances being natural. They call a frag 87% natural but they are including the "natural" alcohol. So out of the actual fragrance oils they are something like 30% to 40% natural depending on the fragrance. Not really a large accomplishment, many frags contain similar amounts of naturally derived ingredients.

>how else should i go about trying new scents in a cost effective manner?
Here's my take on it:
If you can, the most cost effective way to try fragrances is to smell them in person, from a tester, at a department store or at the mall. This is most cost effective when you already stop at the mall somewhat often.

If, of course, you have to drive a long way to get there, it's not worth it. But personally I like to go to the mall a couple times a month. So when I'm there I try a lot of things and try to take home as many small samples as I can.

Your nose kinda gets tired after a while, so you can't smell a large amount of fragrances in one trip. But if you go to one store and try a few, then walk around a bit, and go to another store, you'll be OK.

My process for this is: I first spray fragrances I'm interested in on a test strip. It gives me a pretty good idea what it's like. And the ones I really like, I will spray on my skin. Back of the hands, and inside the elbows--that gives me 4 spots to test how it smells on my skin. And where possible, like at Nordstrom or the Chanel store, I ask to take home a small sample. So if I'm at the mall I'll smell 6 or 7 frags at a makeup store or whatever, maybe spray one or two, on my skin. Then I'll go to various stores and ask for small samples. At my mall there's Montblanc, Chanel, and some others. And then I go to nordstrom, try a couple more on test strips, and ask for one or two more take home samples.

So I come home having smelled a dozen fragrances and I have a couple on my skin to see how they last, and I also have like 5 or 6 sample sprayers.

The downside, of course, is you can only smell stuff that's relatively popular.

And then the next most cost effective way is just to buy sets of small (under 5mL) samples from websites like the perfumed court. Then if you really do like something you can decide to buy a full bottle later.

Sorry for the long post

Well I do love the smell of dirt, vinegar, and fish, astringent and earthy smells. There is a cart section on the site, but what about choosing between a water based or an absolute? An absolute seems like it may be better for longevity since I typically work long hours in an office, but what about the longevity of something water based on clothing? His samples are kind of pricey to warrant buying one of each imo.

>No malls near me,
That's too bad. If you have a Nordstrom or Macy's you can try those. Macy's is pretty crappy, they try to sell you junk. very pushy, can't spray things yourself, and no take home samples. Norstrom is great though.

You might also try Ulta or Sephora. They're chick's shops, really, but they still have some men's perfumes. And I guess you can still get your nose on some women's perfumes as well.

If you don't have ANY of those then that kinda sucks because you won't get free samples, but yeah, the perfumed court has been nice for me. I've used them a couple times before. I got 1mL samples before to save money, but I would recommend buying a little more. It's hard to tell much about it with just 1mL but a small 5mL sprayer is more useful. Still, 1mL is enough to at least see if something is nice or not.

Might wanna make a whole "Bisch" tree out of it, his hit frags lately all share common notes and are very recognizable. You could include the new Kenzo Homme EdP too, it seems similar enough to BI and as a designer it's easier to sample for many people new to the hobby, to get an idea what he's going for. So I’ve been seeing a lot of discourse online about how this is a fragrance “everyone” has. That it is boring, soulless, metallic, etc.

The truth is, all you need is Dior Sauvage, and I think it’s time we acknowledge that. I see some posts on here, with 50+ frags arranged with mood lighting inside a cabinet or on a silver tray. Are you really wearing all of those bro? Who is this bizarre shrine for? What do girls say when they come over and see your collection? Oh wait, they don’t exist in your world, because you look like a hoarder freak. And no woman would subject herself to your sickness. All you need is Sauvage. It is so wearable and versatile. It can be used day or night, at school or at the office, etc.

When I put Dior Sauvage on I turn into a different person. I am not joking. My back straightens, my muscles get tighter, and my balls drop even further. No, I am not kidding. It fucks in the way that no other fragrance does, and it’s the type of frag to spit roast your girlfriend alongside Aventus while you sit in the corner with your baby penis in your hand, reeking of oud. Do I have Aventus? NO. I have Dior Sauvage.

“What about the Sauvage flankers?” You may be wondering. Well, buy any one of them. They all have the same effect. They all WORK. Bleu de Chanel SUCKS. Good luck getting laid or any compliments with that.

One day, two girls in Sephora said “OMG Dior Sauvage is so outplayed, it smells like a fuckboi.” So I wore Sauvage around them the next time. Guess what they said? “OMG what are you wearing today? It smells great!” You stupid bitch, I’m wearing Sauvage!

Wear Sauvage and rejoice. (If you’re in Portland let me know and we can have a Sauvage meat up)

armani code - dont remember this much. wasn't great for the office back then. spicy and more decent for winter or nights.

gucci pour home - sampled a lot in store and came across this one. only one to get a compliment. an ex. ''you always smell great.''

gucci ?? gold cap - a mistake, a flight attendant bought this for me by buying me duty free. had to suffer it, nothing like pour homme. too sweet, girls perfume.

mont blanc - whatever the original is, smells like lynx but higher quality. not much of a fan but used all of this when i use to hit the gym heavily. though i did only own terry dhermes and ysl opium, so prefered this.

terry dhemeres - old man suit smell. i wear a suit, and could also argue am old, still wouldn't wear. not up to the hype.

ysl opium - bought on a whim, thought of opium incense i burn. nothing alike. too sweet. picture some nigger dressed to the 9's in smart casual winter wearing this.

ck one - overwhelmingly cheap in price and smell. projects a mile. smells synthetic.

1988 - high quality toilet spray, and i mean high quality.

colonia intensia - just purchased 50ml of this. my office scent.

je suis un homme - ?????? purchased 50ml of this. going out scent.

git - great smell but something smells artifical after a while

I think Antaeus should go in there, seeing how often it's discussed on /frag/

also, I think Fahrenheit should be one of the 9 starter frags, with other leathers branching out from it (including ganymede, which would lead to Bois Imperial). it doesn't make sense to make the whole leather category branch out from two niche frags (one of which doesn't even have any leather) that you have to sample online. meanwhile, Fahrenheit is not only famous and kind of a must-try, but also is readily available at any fragrance store

that being said, I don't mind it being on the chart. It definitely shouldn't be a starting frag though, it's not a good starter frag for the leather category. it's impossible to find in most IRL frag stores to try out and the only frag branching out from it is Ganymede? that's even harder for a newbie to get his nose on
the starter should be Fahrenheit or Ombre Leather. possibly CH men, but definitely not a niche fragrance with no leather

Not who you’re replying to but the flowchat is too advanced for beginners because the average person isn’t going to be able sample/smell 1/10th of that chart in person. So if you expect a nose neophyte to associate descriptions with smells they’ll need to pay out of pocket just to sample from it’s going to instantly bankrupt a beginner budget.

The best thing a new person can do is go to Nordstroms or Ulta and smell all the designers and corporate niches, let them buy a few of those, then go into the deep end. There should be a beginner and advanced flowchart.

Nordstroms, at least the two I’ve been to have more designer, as well as almost all Tom Ford, parfums de marly, Creeds, and a few random indies/niches, but that chart doesnt even have a single PDM or Creed when they’re the most accessible niches. Caronbro, I have had the chance to try Guerlain Vetiver. I the vetiver smells like it should I believe, but I didn't quite like the opening. Yet, the drydown is when this frag shines, was surprised by how good It evolved. Respectable fragrance.

The CW in that store smelled soooo different and stronger than any CW I have ever tried before, the dry down was the same but longer lasting, the intro was greener and stronger than usual. I wonder if it was cause the juice is new or the opposite.

Our Wood is confirmed great on skin, okay performance.

Kouros drydown is alright after a while, I think I will just move it to dislike, I was too harsh. It stills smells like a very old woman frag to me, something from the 60ies maybe.

Tried Narciso Rodroguez blue noir edt and edp. The edp is your generic sweetish acquatic, good performance, big skip, the edt was a little better. Still nothing worth a buy imo.

Tried many Acqua di Parma frags as I'm finally back home where they are available. ADP is the best frag brand I have smelled so far for, they smell refined and expensive, and NEVER synthetic, extremely natural smelling. Colonia is the quintess cologne, not my thing though. the rose and magnolia ones are great. bergamotto di calabria is the best citrus frag ever, no contest. but the performance is questionable, 6 sprays were very light. Will have to test it again cause that scent was formidable.

Not sure if he would award it 5/5 as Turin is famously whimsical with his top choices but I believe that he’d surely rate it as 4/5 in a parallel to another Bisch’s seemingly simple but masterful exploration of a single accord: Attaquer he composed for ELDO where he bases everything around green labdanum. You can imagine rewriting this review almost by verbatim for BI but with focus on fresh-aromatic woods instead of green labdanum.
> Attaquer le Soleil Marquis de Sade (Etat Libre d’Orange) **** green labdanum
>Perfumer Quentin Bisch claims that this fragrance was done to address his prejudice against cistus, a.k.a. labdanum or the resin of the rockrose, a sort of exposure therapy for a workplace phobia. He’s done it with a harmony of green and resinous tones true to the material but extra, with the strong rich smells of paint and glue that some of us frankly find better than roses. It ties together the animalic, the mineral and the vegetal in one huge eerie accord that feels like the final answer to a medieval theological question.

That might be a problem considering what you're looking for, a clean and "sterile" scent is by nature not very powerful, as that would really go against common sense. How could a fragrance scream and say "Look at me, I smell like... nothing at all?". Some frags are quite good at imitating fresh laundry, maybe that would satisfy you, just look for notes on fragrantica.
