Yeah, because anyone that isn't an autistic prestige monger would look at it, subconsciously make some rough calculations on how much the materials and labor would cost based on comparing to some other high end objects, and correctly assume that the watch probably costs $3k tops to produce and $2k of markup seems in line with the high end of luxury goods. Are Chinese manufacturers that can be raided/liquidated at any moment somehow more adept at manufacturing ramp than one of the largest and oldest watchmakers in the world? Of course not. Reps are a good indicator of the true cost of these watches, yeah Swiss labor is a bit more expensive but Rolex also makes a lot more watches on their assembly lines so the R&D and equipment cost is more spread out. Of course, I work in an actually difficult manufacturing sector (automotive), where we somehow integrate completely new technology year after year, make variants for dozens of markets with thousands of different homologation requirements, ship these 4klb + giant things all across the world, achieve good enough 100k mile 8 year reliability to not eat the profit margin in warranty and recall costs, sell these things that people entrust their lives to, ship millions of units, and they still cost less than a Daytona, something Rolex has been making for a half century yet still apparently aren't adept enough to ramp their production of.

And now we come full circle - you only want those luxury goods because marketing and artificial scarcity. I used to work for Ferrari - our engineering was far less impressive than any cheap car manufacturer. Making luxury goods at high margins is easy. Making a lot of cheap stuff is hard. We were in the same position as Rolex and basically invented the playbook on this - yeah we could sell 50k 458s a year, but this devalues the brand in the long term. Also, 80% of your sales comes from 20% of your customers, a sort of whale pareto principal. So you make the California and the FF, and then the 458 Speciale and Challenge. Buy an FF and maybe you can get on the waitlist for a 458 Spyder. Oh you have the Spyder now, don't you want to get into racing? Well you can buy a Speciale and a Challenge at the same time, you want the set don't you? Sound familiar?

There isn't a single watch brand on earth that produces its own materials. At best they buy crude steel and make their own cases and bracelets, but most will outsource this step.

People don't realize how autistic and control-freak Rolex can be about its production process. Sure they make a ton of money but that's the point of a company.

>worn by James Bond
Bond (a fictional character) always famously wore a Rolex, Rolex was very successful on the back of this association ("I'll buy a Rolex, I'll be like James Bond!"), then Omega's marketing department saw its chance in 1995 and paid the big bucks (because modern Bond films are soulless husks that revolve around marketing various products) to make sure that Bond wore an Omega. They even went so far as to make the script explicitly mention that Bond no longer wore a Rolex but an Omega in 2006's Casino Royale.

Anything with a full-gold bracelet, especially in yellow gold, just makes the wearer look like a greazeball or an old man (who is probably pretty greazy).

I like it a lot; five months in but I'd note that:

It's not very accurate out of the factory (+14 s/d)
The bezel isn't hardened and has picked up a ding or two
The case shape is really interesting and complex but doesn't lend itself to that many kinds of strap - there's a slight gap between the springbar and the 'lug' which their stock strap covers but my dressier one doesn't so well

But if you've got girl wrists like me then it's one of the smallest lug-to-lugs of any 7750 watch. I'd take a look at the Outdoor line in general to be honest - they have some nice dial colours and you can get one with a blued steel second hand.
