Have a few watches, ranging from a few hundred to about $6k, but I am looking for an all purpose respectable / high quality beater.

Something around $1-1.5k, steel, with a leather/rubber/non-steel strap.

Where is the intersection between dings, scratches, throwing it in a drawer, taking it on long hikes, and letting it build character, and higher quality craftsmanship?

Montblanc? Breitling?

All of my current watches are ones I care about, and try to keep clean and perfect. Many of them have a 9-18k gold case, and one is fully 18k gold including the gold band. With this watch, I want the opposite: a high quality beater.

They're like helium escape valves. The number of people who actually need them is vanishingly small.

Basically, it's a ten minute countdown timer. Because sailboats can't just start and stop on a dime, they need to be able to time when they cross the start line. The boat's skipper will start the countdown to the starting gun and he'll know to speed up or slow down as he approaches the start line and, if he times it right, will cross the line right as the gun goes off and at full speed.

>> No.17174613

>>17174586
Yeah but IIRC there is this other aspect where the 10 minute countdown can be restarted up to 5 times before the start of the race and so they have some mechanism to keep track of which 10 minute period it is or some shit like that. Or i just made that all up

>> No.17174622

Yeah. They all function slightly differently. Nowadays, much like how divers don't use dive watches anymore and use dive computers, yacht-timer watches have been replaced with computers too.

For the guy who wants a Bullhead, the other thread was pruned before I finished typing:

There is this auction for the original 8110 than may interest you:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/394184799422
Some advise tho:
1. For the Citizen Bullhead there is no better caliber, and proportions, than the original vintage 8110 with a cool flyback chronograph caliber.
2. The bracelet in the auction is aftermarket (he himself admit this) and the date and day wheels are also not the originals, as they are white, not black. The other available auction also has aftermarket pieces.
3. If you want total originalty, like lawyeranon's bullhead, prepare to pay a more heftier price, probably above 3k.

Are you the insurance guy in Indianapolis? Just curious.

To your broader question, though, full gold watches are simply not popular right now and very few ADs will bother to stock them. They prefer to stock inventory that moves. The factories don't even make that many of them. Normally, anyone who's looking to buy one will understand that it's akin to a special order.

Contractor, but yes. I can't imagine that they don't move gold case and bracelet models at any of the locations I went. The Northside of Indianapolis and Fishers/Carmel area are some of the highest per capita income areas of the country. I was even willing to compromise and get something cheaper that I still wanted, but goddamn if there was nothing to buy. The worst part is the "I dunno when" or "muh wait list". If these were special order, you figure someone could give me a goddamn date at least.

The hierarchy of watch ass pain is as follows:

Hand wound, requires constant attention.

Automatic, must be set if left stationary for too long, gets worse with day/date complications. This is a particularly problem if you have a big collection and change watches frequently.

Quartz, replace a battery every few years set date for monthswith less than 31 days and daylight savings time.

Solar quartz, basically set it and forget it except for months with less than 31 days and daylight savings time.

Solar quarts perpetual/atomic clock by radio/bluetooth, literally nothing except service.

I have most of these except the last one and I have been wearing picrel out the most lately. I am also a weirdo who wears different watches in the house though so I set a lot of mechanicals. As a tip if your mechanical winds down and you are going to wear it all day don't fully wind it save the gears and let the automatic do its thing.

People here don't even realize most Rolex have been trading for above MSRP since the early 2010s.
The release of new models (with the 32XX movements) after 2020 just made things even crazier.
Pic related are the price for the GMT Pepsi.

Price evolution in the last 3 months show that the Milgauss went from 175% of its MSRP to 160%.
That's just one part of the data. It doesnt show you the full picture.
As someone who has an interest for this watch (like a buyer or a flipper), you'd want to know where the price was 6 months, 1 year ago, 2 years ago, etc.
