/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - G&G EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

Those boots are Goodyear welted. Tbh Blake stitch makes sense for some dress shoes since it's faster, cheaper, less bulky,, and you're not typically going to be using them in situations where a Goodyear welt would provide a significant advantage. For most boots in /btg/, a Goodyear is warranted due to the higher durability, but for dress shoes or hoots that doesn't really apply as much

>> No.17154981

gyw shoes cost a little bit more that's why my first shoes were blake stiched, also blake stiching is fine for summer shoes altho my summer loafers are gyw lol
It's just the cost, there is no reason to get a blake stich over a goodyear welt also modern welts aren't even that bulky and the welt actually prevents the upper from bumping into stuff which is a big plus.
gyw and stichdown is just superior but not everyone can afford them, for a gyw shoe you can buy two blake shoes.

>> No.17154995

>>17154988
True. With cheaper shoes, you might not even get them resoled once you realize you can buy the same same shoe for cheaper used. In that case, a Blake stitch is alright. It looks cleaner, and I think it makes loafers look better.

How did people in the early 20th century keep wearing leather shoes and suits without paved roads, easy laundry or deodorant?

Maintaining leather dress shoes is already painful for me and I'm in a carpeted office already. Somehow every time I come home I see a new scuff that needs to be polished.
I think it must be the car's pedals that do it.

Goodyear welt (today) uses a a piece of fabric rib called the gemming, or canvas rib. The welt is sewn into that canvas rib.
Handwelt uses a holdfast, which needs to be hand carved out from the leather insole. The welt is sewn into the holfast.

You can hand sew the welt into gemming if you want. It still doesnt change the nature of the construction (glue) since you still rely on the gemming. So it's not simply done by hand vs done by machine.

with the addition of the gemming for GYW the height difference is filled in with c*rk which inevitably turn to dust, multiple points of failure including the gemming are introduced in order to speed up the welting process for mass production. the structuring isnt the issue desu
they almost always use the 79 last which has a fairly tall toe compared to a lot of other brands and then on top of that the owner has a toe cap obsession. i think theyre true cap toes too so that only adds to the bulk
this is on the pretty flat 55 last which they use much less often with no toecap. i think they also offer unstructured as an option on the MTOs

>> No.17159883

The quality of handwelted shoes can vary greatly due to the quality of leather insole used.

Handwelt shoes, due to the way they are constructed, necessitate thick insole. GYW typically uses thinner insole. Also, your feet sit closer to the sole on Handwelt, due to the void inside being much lower.

Handwelt with good insole will be more flexible and comfortable than GYW at day 1.

Handwelt with shittier insole will be stiff at first but break in eventually.

I like the aesthetics of the shoe, but I'm not sure it would be suited towards long winter wear. The leather is water resistant, but it still has a Goodyear welt (vs. Storm Welt) and a fairly low ankle, which still allows some cold and wet to sleep through. It also has a logger heel, which isn't great on flat and wet surfaces, where the majority of my time outside will be spent. It's primarily a work boot, so although the double leather lining helps to slow down the cold coming into the boot, it's also quite heavy.

Source? I was trying to do a comparison on Whites' hand welt water resistance vs a machine welted boot, but most of what I saw just affirmed more durability and comfort on a handwelt. I figured that a storm welt, being an upturned Goodyear, was more suited towards inclement weather.
>The Santos are less than 6"

DESU I don't know anything heel performance in snow, so you're probably right there. I just didn't know the effect of a higher heel on balance and all-day comfort of the boot.
>They're heavy, and if you don't like that, you're a basedboi
A shoe's weight should correspond to the work you're doing with it. I'm getting boots for winter business purposes, not for heavy physical labor or hiking. There's really no point in buying a heavy boot to be walking around the office all day. I'm primarily looking for something that can keep my feet dry and relatively warm when I have to go outside; Not a work boot for me to trudge around all day in.

The bead on the storm welt is merely resting on the upper leather. It still inevitably leaves a gap for water to seep through.

The rolled welt that White's uses (this is the real important thing, not Handwelting) is stitched through the upper, making a close connection between the 2. So no gap means water won't seep in.

Do ppl really wear slim dressier boots like this? What do you wear them with? I feel like all would look better as a regular low top shoe.

I cant picture anyone wearing them besides those 50/60 year olds who LARP as being old fashioned "classy" safari hunter

Only slim boots that seem normal or understandable to me to wear for formal or smart/casual are Chelsea's or side zip ones. Otherwise shouldn't lace up ones be chunkier or more rugged?

>> No.17160768

>>17160736
Chelsea’s are a lot less formal than dress boots. The lack of laces brings the formality down. Some people like wearing dress boots in jeans and chinos, you’ll see them a lot with odd trousers, and you might see them in less formal suits. The oxford itself is said to come from a professor at Oxford University cutting his boots to make them low-cut. On your point of about boots being chunky, slimmer boots are perceived to be a mark of craftsmanship and elegance. Chunky boots are more associated with blue-collar work and hard labor, so the dress shoe, in today’s world, tends to go in the opposite direction.

>> No.17160785

Dress boots usually aren’t as formal as their low-cut counterparts, but they’re completely acceptable in everything between casual and business casual attire. They wouldn’t we my first pick for an interview, but if you’re wearing a sweater and shirt in the fall, it fits in nicely.

Oxford) while still being able to be worn casually.
