I always thought it was the normal way to go about it until I realized that most people aren't collectors and don't just keep what they buy. I can get it with houses and cars and a few other purchases, but small stuff like clothes, shoes and watches? I don't get it.

At some point you hit a critical mass where you just don't want to own more watches, as in you're in danger of owning too many to actually wear on a regular basis. In that case I think it makes sense to sell a watch and buy another if you want to keep the size of your collection manageable. But I think the vast majority of people who are churning and burning watches are either inexperienced and don't know what they want or are just following hype.

Rolex marketing rides on its coat-tails of the 1950s when it was the only serious provider of steel, anti-shock, or water resistant watches. That was also when a Rolex didn’t cost you an arm and a leg. Nowadays, its very silly to bring such an expensive piece to a situation where it’s likely to get lost, stolen, scratched, cracked, or damaged. In any endurance test, a rangemaster beats an explorer

There’s a reason divers and the military no longer uses Rolex

The point was it’s just silly to want to LARP using an Omega when Omegas are luxury watches and no longer “tough guy” pieces

I'd lean more toward a Seiko. Will it last 20 years without service? Probably not, but I'd bet it'll last longer than Vostok without service. Either way if you do eventually want to get it serviced they just replace the whole movement since they're cheap garbage. They'll both keep terrible time after 10 years if they are even still running. Hell, they keep terrible time right out of the box.

It's probably worth spending a little more to get something not so disposable.

ALWAYS have a Rolex on your wrist when you travel.
>American Travel Channel host Philippe Cousteau says he was advised by a British ex-special forces member to always travel with a steel Rolex as it makes an emergency ‘tradable commodity’. While this does have the whiff of Urban Legend about it, after all in extreme circumstances you are likely to just get the watch taken from you – unless you look like a ex-member of the British special forces that is, it does make the point that Rolex is recognised as valuable and desirable even in the remotest parts of the world.

Somone was asking about german pilots watches the other day.
The top super premium brand is Tourby, they raised their prices recently by only offering higher tier versions of the eta movements they use but they make beautiful stuff.
If you can afford this i would get one over dekla, is it actually worth the money for the differences? That's up to you and what kind of budget you have, dekla is a great choice too.

That's called a driver's watch. If you are looking for mechanical, there aren't that many options. To my knowledge, there are only three I can think of:
1. Amida Digitrend, like mine. (Picrel) Affordable and cool, but only if you find one with a 17 jewels movement. Otherwise it will die when less expected and won't be fixable, basically a death watch.
2. Romain Jerome Spacecraft which only portraits the hour at the side and the minutes on top (not very practical, I don't like it) and expensive, and
3. MB&F Horological Machine No. 5 Extremely expensive as you might have already discovered.

Watch brand capitalize on shit like >>17158419 and publicize the fuck out of it so that they can market it to fat plebs whose main daily exertion is climbing up the office steps or having a fap or squeezing out their daily shit.
This is based off hundreds of watchautist forum threads I've seen over the past 15 years where they surveyed thousands of photos of troops.
Whatever it is you're on about is more likely to be a marketing ploy than anything else.
Shit I think jet pilots were wearing some kind of gps smartwatch, garmin?, because it was ironically more reliable than the billion dollar state of the art jet instrumentation they were testing in the air.
