The artwork: Vostok was contracted by the soviet army to supply watches for infantry and their equivalent of frogmen. The art was stuff they put on there so grunts could feel a little better while freezing, starving, and fighting for their lives. The historical stuff is an authentic piece of the kit, if one were inclined to collect and wear soviet milsurp / repro.

The less ancient-looking stuff is kind of cool on its own, to me. Komandirskie classic series 02, 03, 28, 35, and 65 feature unique yet practical dials with the same "grunt-friendly" construction. The one I have (pictured) is a series 65 w/date, which is the group that provides the most neatly integrated design IMO.

I can't really help you with the assessment that these things are shitters, though. The finish is spartan, and their bracelets universally suck. The movement will have to be regulated into keeping time, although it'll reliably stay there once you get it there. They're generally fairly robust, so long as you don't mind buffing the plastic crystal every now and then. The movement's been described by watchmakers as simple and robust.

I disagree. The white gold fluted bezel has been a DJ thing for decades and, even in SS, the Jubilee is the most comfortable bracelet ever made.

I had a previous gen Thunderbird on a Jubilee and it was the most comfortable watch I've ever owned. With the new solid links, the "Jubilee stretch" is kind of cured, so there's no reason to not get it, unless you think you need the additional strength that the Oyster bracelet provides. (And, honestly, you don't.)

nice post a picture of your reef when you get a chance. i actually really like formex and i think they have some really interesting offerings. most of their models offer unique styling and interesting/quirky features. if they make a smaller version of the reef and a decent looking chrono (their current chrono offerings are pretty ugly) they will have a really nice lineup of sports watches.
my favorite model from them is the blue essense 39. seems like an awesome

As a counter for the in-house damasko, I would say avoid.
Damasko was hit hard by lockdowns, and then their factory was trashed by thieves IIRC. And now german industry as a whole is completely fucked unless the government pulls a complete 180 policy-wise which just isn't looking very likely right now. Germany is heading over the falls and no German is doing anything to fucking stop it.
That is to say long term I wouldn't personally want to buy an in-house caliber from a brand with a less than certain future. Better something that's a little easier to get serviced due to ubiquity of components rather than some special niche movement parts from a niche brand.
Hard times are coming. What brands survive and which disappear remains to be seen.

Also, IMO I think damasko's best days, design wise, are over. Their older basic DA models were great. These newer dials don't have enough differentiation between larger hour indices and the minutes compared with the older dials, making that millisecond glance to tell the time just that little bit less easy.
Lastly, though I've not had to deal with them myself, I've heard enough egregious shit concerning their CS, when dealing direct with the factory, that I'm not inclined to recommend them at all.
If you're in the US I believe that their distributor had a guy capable of servicing them, at least their older models I don't know about these new movements.
I've got a DA36 that needs a service, and though I'm not anywhere near the US I'm more inclined to have that guy there do it rather than deal with Damasko direct. Too many ill accounts.

Additionally, and I am probably wrong about this, I believe Sinn has begun taking active steps in improving their lume situation from mediocre C1 superluminova to BGW9, which is infinitely better in terms of initial brightness and longevity and is also white.
From what I could remember of the situation a few years ago, the damasko guy bluntly refused to even hear about any lume but shitty c1. Maybe he's changed his mind since I last looked.
Moot point though as I don't think the 556 that anon was looking at had BGW9.

Big Crown Pointer Date, the old model with the generic Swiss movement. The sensation and sound when manually winding changed. Ran just fine and automatically wound without issue. The watchmaker from the shop said it was a somewhat common but easy to fix problem that oris would pay for. The problem is that it would be as heavy, or even heavier, than the platinum bracelet (because the amount of metal around the dial) and a lot more expensive too, since tantalum is harder than platinum and more difficult to work. Very nice, tho.

at this price point going mechanical might not be a good idea but seiko 5 or orient bambino might be worth a look

It's Audemars Piguet. 100%.
François-Henry Bennahmias (CEO of AP) has been collected Swatch since the late 80s. He even said in an interview with a French youtuber that he loved the Moonswatch.
It can't be VC since it's Richemont owned. Can't be Patek nor Rolex, they have nothing to gain from this.
