In a few weeks I'll be racing at the Monterey Historics (2 of my cars were accepted this year). This event is partially subsidized by Rolex, the title sponsor for a long time. Rolex only makes money selling watches, so let's dissect this a bit. It's hilarious to me that there's people that will pay 10-15% of their pretax income on a Rolex (an assembly line watch with a BOM cost of maybe $225). Let's think about this transaction - this person is paying for me to have fun with my vintage race cars, for professional sailors to make money, for already ludicrously rich tennis players to become more rich - in exchange, a little trinket to show EVERYONE ELSE that you made this donation. And how does Rolex pull of their pricing model? By telling you you aren't rich enough to buy one! You get cuck shamed into buying a trinket to prove you are indeed a cuck.

What do you think about the U50? Specifically the U50S (black)? I have no idea how their black coating holds up. It's apparently coated over only tegimented models which apparently makes it better off than regular pvd on steel. Thing is, I've scratched and scraped watches more often than really knocked them about, so I don't know how much this supposed "underlying strength" matters in that case.

It does sort of. The Omega OEM NATO looks much higher quality than a regular nato, so it kind of reminds me of those silk-looking straps that watches used to come with decades ago.

Left, top and right are the only original dials.
The bottom is a shitty frankenstein.
The white and cream dials have BLACK hands, the black dial has SILVER hands. That's the only combination possible.
Black and the right one have a kind of rugged metallic dial, while the other one has a smooth finish.
They may have "PAKETA", "RAKETA" or even "PAKEMA" engraved in the dial, depending on the market they were sold.
They're also small watches, with small crowns.
The black Copernicus is not PVD, is some sort of paint that doesn't flake, but only has a very small thickness, so it might be scratched revealing the tin body underneath.
They're all handwind too.
All of the models have a curved glass dome. NOT sapphire. The back is stainless steel.

Depends, you can go many ways. Why do you like to wear tracksuits? That may give a little more direction because as is you could go for a drug dealer/criminal look with a gold (colored) or otherwise blingy watch, something more casual and sporty looking like a chunky G-Shock, something comfy and casual, or maybe a bit more terrorist inspired with a Casio F-91W.

Nice looking sports watch with decent finishing and properly applied lume an indicies. Good size, good colors. I just think it looks like a sports watch with it's own dna and not being an obvious homage of anything.
I guess you could compare it to stuff from seiko and they dont have any answers in that price range. Compared to slightly more expensive competitors like the tissot gentleman (pic related) i think it comes out ahead, with sharper finishing and a nicer set of hands and indices.
I mean it's still a citizen so its not for everyone but its one of the best making wstches they have made in years outside of their 2-3 thousand dollar chronomaster high accuracy quartz series

IWC has released an updated Pilot. The Mark XX.

Still 40mm but the lugs are shorter and the case is a little thinner at 10.8mm
New movement has 120 hours (!!) of power reserve.
Date window is back to being white and has been moved a little further from the center of the dial.
It now also has 100m of water resistance.

Overall, if they have a version on a bracelet coming, this looks like a solid set of improvements from the Mark XVIII.

No, it's a cal. 32111 which is an update to the 32110 which is based off the old ETA 2892 architecture (whose patents ran out decades ago) but is manufactured by ValFleurier, who is a movement manufacturer for a lot of Richemont brands.

The beat rate hasn't been slowed, like Swatch does with the Powermatics.

(IIRC, the only Richemont brands that do ALL of their movement work in-house are ALS and JLC, all the others use ValFleurier to one degree or another, for example, Piaget makes their own Altiplano movements, but uses Cartier architecture for the Polos.)

Clever? shure
Kudos to swatch? Nah
The main reason they did it was that consumers started paying attention to watch movements and started asking why swatch was selling 2824/2892 movements in $500 watches all the way up to $5,000-$8,000 watches and they needed to create some market segmentation. Same reason they were trying to stop selling 2824 movements to microbrands because the micros were selling nice looking watches with those movements for $600

You can find online catalogues of Raketa which can show you original dials if you want to avoid frankens. Pic related is all original copernicus dials, movement is supposed to be 2609HП written on the bridge (2609NP when googling)

The watch should be 12H movement and not the 24H movement Raketa also makes.

It's not a curved glass dome. It's flat stepped glass. There's no dome, like a telescope.

Cases are made out of not tin, but brass or some shit that gets exposed if you sweat on it too much.
