I personally either like to go really loud/peacocky with sneakers, or subtle like all black, otherwise it gets a little harder to match outfits with them without looking like a manchild, my experience anyway

We're talking Sneakers, right? Universally good looking always also means a bit basic, but there are several options you can go with.
The obvious choice is Adidas Sambas/Gazelles, the best go to sneaker there is but extremely basic.
Converse All Stars and Vans Old Skools work really well and would be my recommendation for black ones. They make your whole fit lean kinda punk/skater though.
Reebok C85 is the best choice for basic and cheap.
Simple colorway on Jordans or Forums if you want to build something basketball/streetwear.
Veja if you're going for fair trade/eco friendly.

You could say that. I'm partial to them because I'm on my feet a lot without breaks and I've found that NB shoes hold up. I can try on shoes for literal hours and not find a fit so I can relate to him not wanting to dump the comfy shoes, and he doesn't have to. But we're in agreement that picking a sneaker like he has can make it harder to match

To add to this, New Balance shoes are great for wide feet. My mother has major issues finding shoes that fit her and support her badly overpronated arch, but says that the 574's I bought her as a gift a few years ago are the most comfortable ones she's ever worn. I'd probably get some for myself if they produced them in a non-leather, non-limited edition release.
