JLC has a tradition of making reliable movements (muh watchmakers of watchmakers) but they never have been good at making nice designs or simply being a desirable brand.
They fell for literally every memes of watchmaking :
>large diameters
>useless complications
>grandes complications
>high jewelry watches
They're trying so hard to be the ultimate watch brand it's embarrassing. Their price point goes from 6k to 2.5M, it's ridiculous. They also lack consistency in their designs. The Reverso, the Polaris, the Master Control all look like they come from different brands.
What's worse, for every watch they make there's always a better (and often cheaper) alternative. Why would anyone spend 80k on a JLC when they can get an ALS, a PP, a FP Journe or a Laurent Ferrier for that price?

One of my favorite thing to do is to check out the comments on the Rolex instagram page.
It's full of assblasted faggots seething about the impossibility to get a Rolex from an AD.
I browse these comments with a Rolex on my wrist. Amazing feeling.

>never have been good at making nice designs
>not desirable

The reverso and polaris/memovox are iconic designs and they have a smaller market share than the big boys but there's a reason they're still around.

They fell for the giant watch meme but so did basically everyone else and no one can compete with Rolex in the dual purpose dress/tool watch department which is what everyone wants. So, like all the other brands basically, they're doing their best to carve out a niche in the market. Besides their high watchmaking pieces, everything else they make is priced very competitively and they generally focus more on value and reliability than their competitors which makes them more desirable to certain kinds of buyers.

Laurent Ferrier makes gorgeous watches but case in point, I have heard lots of reports of QC and reliability issues with them. Buying an equally expensive JLC would be much less risky if only because there are JLC ADs and service centers more readily available.

It's even more hilarious on Linkedin because people write these long posts about how Rolex is doing everything wrong and they'll go bankrupt very soon.
Look at them. They've saved for months for a Rolex but can't get one. So they want one even more. And when they'll eventually get one (on the grey or from an AD) they'll cherish it like their own child.
Name a single brand on earth that has this effect on people. There's none. Rolex is the ultimate luxury brand. Nothing can compete.

I wear a casio with a steel bracelet daily. Sometimes I wear a 90s Bulova Marine Star chronograph and it's nice, but is there something with a bit of the 80s flair of the casio while still not being a cheap digital watch? JLC and GS are two sides of the same coin. You buy a JLC because you want a well made relatively affordable complication like a moon phase or a perpetual calendar for under $20k. You buy a GS because you want a hand-finished dial and case without paying holy trinity prices or because you want a spring drive. This is also why both of these brands will always be pretty niche, because the general public doesn’t care about complications or case finishing. There will always be significant trade offs when you’re looking at watches in the ~$10,000 range or under.

Seems like you don't even know what "complications" means. A date window is a complication.
I'm talking about JLC's typical autism like that stupid jumping date hand on the Master Control Calendar to make sure the moon phase isn't obscured by a one tenth of a millimeter thick hand. That would ruin the readability, right?
Or this godawful idea of shoe-horning a perpetual calendar into a diving watch. Makes no sense.
They even put a chronograph into a Reverso (some retard on this board has one, maybe that's you).

You don't get it.
"Quantième" has a grave accent but they decided to ignore it by writing it QUANTIEME.
"à" also has a grave accent but they didn't ignore it for some arbitrary reasons.

They're changing the rules they have established 3 letters earlier. Another proof JLC is run by literal downies.

When the lawsuit was settled, Hamilton was allowed to continue to produce the Otis but only if they contained a JLC movement but they discontinued it anyway.

Got it after liking it in video. The fake douphine hand sounds neat but looks terrible in person. This specific textured dial lost its appeal a few days in & while I knew that I was buying something very DW-esque, I straight up hated how it looked once I put it on. It lacks refinement proportion, it’s only redeeming features are the okayish movement finishing & thinness.
Thanks for reading my blog about my traumatising buy of a Mido Baroncelli which sits as a constant reminder of my many terrible life decisions in the dark corner of my watchbox.
