Hamilton use ETA movements (from the mother company Swatch Group so they're super cheap). The watches are probably 100% machine made.
IWC makes most of their movements (they also buy some ETAs from Swatch Group for their cheaper models). They claim the watches are "handcrafted" (probably bullshit but whatever) and they use finer materials than Hamilton. Also marketing costs.

IWC is a weird brand. They're trying to be too many different things. Some of their models are cool though.

I posted this thing I salvaged from the inherited crap box a few threads ago. It's a pretty interesting piece and I really like the look, but it's difficult to really find anything about these watches. Does anyone here know where I should look? The bossing is gold I think, so this should be the 1953 70th anniversary edition. Is it rare or worth anything? Modern Alpina seems like a meme but it seems like old Alpina was respectable enough.

If it's such an undesirable thing why do people that service them do this? Or is it something only a watch forum autist is going to notice or give a shit about?

Its entirely the fault of boomers, boomer watch shop doesn't want to give peoples serviced watches back all scratched up, so they just haphazardly slap it on the buffing wheel, no big deal they think im just doing one pass per side. Do this a few times and it looks like shit. Or some shop buys a rolex, gotta polish it up before they put it in the case. A lot of this can be remedied by having somone that actually knows how to polish watches do it and not some boomer jewler with a buffing wheel. If you send it to rolex they will also repolish but it won't look like that. But really people need to learn to stop polishing watches, it looks good for a week after and then its all scratched up again.

Note that Zodiac today has nothing to do with Zodiac of yesteryear.
Last I remember it was last owned by Fossil. Last I knew they only bothered with current zodiacs up to the early 2000's, which were all quartz shit anyway. Maybe whoever owns it now gives a shit about their "heritage".
As you know the quartz crisis fucked everyone well up.
Zodiac got double hit because it was still recovering its image from the zodiac killer association, who took his name from this company because he wore a zodiac diver and was an unimaginative fuck.

I remember looking at certain zodiac models and found that some of their movements cannot be serviced because there's a certain component that breaks in them and since Zodiac of old doesn't exist anymore to make that component it's almost never worth it for small watchmakers to bother servicing them because they would have to create this part from scratch.
The popularity of the old seawolf skindiver and its dramatic increase in value might get some of them bothering, but they almost always just cannibalize parts from other movements.
Perhaps 3d printing will eventually come to the rescue, I don't know. All I know is that independent watchmakers capable of making watch parts from scratch and will bother to actually do so are very few and very far between, and for the labor and price they'd rather service some more recognizable current luxury brand and tell you to take a hike because it's neither worth their time nor yours.
Sad.
Such is the fate of in-house movements.

Omega.
Their co-axial escapement hasn't been developed by them. They just bought the patent from George Daniels, who tried to sell it to different watchmakers prior to Omega.
Its only advantage is longer servicing intervals. Downside is only Omega can service your watch at whatever cost they want. It doesnt improve accuracy, power reserve or thinness of the movement.

It's especially evident in cars nowadays. If anything went wrong on the older ones you could take a spanner and fix stuff, today you have to take it to a service so they can hook it up to a computer with a special connector that then spews a bunch of errors out, and there are plastic covers everywhere... You could easily change a lightbulb before, now it takes a skilled mechanic 45 minutes to change one on a freaking Megane, and if you have an Audi you have to change the whole thing. I'm in favour of the old school way, but then again i'm poor so i understand why the new stuff is the way it is.

alright, that's gonna mean you want a watch with a diameter between 38-42mm
might be worth wandering into a local jewellers and seeing which watch sits well on your wrist

not the anon you're asking about colours from, but the initial cream dial is very low key and would go with most outfits; as would silver and slate grey
anything more bold than that - including black - is going to be making eye-catching and 'making a statement', but i don't know if you're ready for that

Pic related looks pretty fucking good to me, but you're entitled to your own taste. And I don't get what being third worlder would have to do with this. As for the feel, seiko quartz are solid watches, idk what you are talking about

>> using a watch for time
>lol no I have my phone/computer for that
Now this is fucking retarded. So you'd wear your auto without setting it beforehand? And have completely wrong time as you are out and about? And if someone, noticing you're wearing a watch, asks you the time, you'll just pull out your phone?

The regular F300Hz will sound more like an accutron, but my megasonic is noticeably higher pitched (also has coil whine on top of the 720Hz tone). I got mine for about $500 but that was a steal even when I got it a few years ago. Nowadays I'd be surprised if you could get a megasonic for any less than $1000.
