Someone took an unregulated SLA037 (which has a 8L55 which i believe isn't that much different than th 8L35) to a watchmaker and it had zero positional variance. The watchmaker regulated it and it kept perfect time ever since. I can't rfind the article right now but it was genuinely good.

Very strange to me that Seiko finds -10/+15/d acceptable in a movement that they brag is hand-made in their GS factory. Guess they need to try and get people to buy their ghastly full blown GS diver somehow.

>> No.17103554

>>17103531
I do wear divers with dress shirts and slacks, even with a blazer. However I wouldn't wear it with a suit, even without a tie because it just looks too sporty which makes it seem completely out of place.

Also, if you want to wear a diver with a dress shirt, make sure you tailor your cuffs to accommodate the size as most divers are a bit bulkier. Having creased cuffs is a bad look regardless of the watch.

If you really want to do a more sporty watch with a suit or other more formal wear, you should go with a much subtle and sleek watch, something along the lines of Rolex Oyster Perpetual.

>> No.17103558

>>17103548
It's not that the movements can't be adjusted to excellent precision and accuracy, it's that Seiko doesn't bother doing so out of the factory. That's the problem. Companies like Rolex, JLC, etc take the time to make sure their watches are good out of the box.

PATEK FANS ON SUICIDE WATCH
>I am mildly entertaining the idea of consolidating some of my lesser worn watches into a higher end watch -- like a Patek. I don't know that I will actually do this, but I'm considering it. So, I decided it was time to take a trip to my friendly neighborhood Patek AD.

>I don't know what I was expecting, but I thought I would at least see some of the less hyped models in the cases; alas, not a single Patek in the display cases. I then struck up a conversation with the sales rep about current availability. I told him that I was in no particular rush, but curious if it would be possible to get a Patek. To be clear, I was not looking for a Nautilus or an Aquanaut -- I know those are impossible to get a retail. I explained that I was mostly interested in a Calatrava, like a 6119G or 5227R, but would certainly be open to something else. The sales rep explained that it would be very difficult to get one, but I should keep in touch. At that point, however, the conversation took an interesting turn.

>As I was walking out, the sales rep stated that Patek would really prefer that I have a sales history. It was suggested that I buy my wife a Patek, so that my name could be registered with Patek and improve my chance at getting another watch. I was told that I could have a watch for my wife very soon, and that I should purchase it. I've heard other stories about ADs explicitly requesting purchases of women's watches or less popular models to get another watch, typically a Rolex, but I had not had this experience before. So, I kept the discussion going to see what it would take to be considered for a Patek at this AD.

>> No.17103571

>>17103569
>I have been eyeing the new IWC Pilot Chrono with the bronze case and blue dial, and the AD actually had one in the case. So, I asked him to show it to me (great watch, btw, though the case is quite tall). As I was looking at the IWC, the rep told me that buying that watch really wouldn't "help me." I was told I needed to purchase a JLC to improve my chances at getting a Patek. Not just any JLC, mind you, but a MUT Perpetual Calendar in Pink Gold -- a watch that comes with a $37,300 price tag. As an aside, the JLC MUT Perpetual in Pink Gold is an absolutely stunning watch, just not one I ever considered buying for myself. That was not the end of the discussion either. I was told to purchase the JLC, after which I could get a couple of Rolexes and then maybe I would be offered a Patek. I was also explicitly told twice that I need to purchase whatever Patek is offered to me.
>So, according to the rep I spoke with yesterday, getting a Patek will require me to 1) buy a Patek for my wife, 2) by a $37,300 JLC and 3) buy a couple of Rolexes. At that point, I might have the opportunity to purchase whatever Patek is offered to me. Needless to say, the visit cured me of my desire to consolidate and buy a Patek. While I love some of the Patek watches, the cost of the watch combined with all the other things I would need to purchase is a bit high. I now understand why some purchase from gray dealers.

That's true, but when you get one that loses 15 seconds per day, their customer service will respond with "Eh, it's within spec. What do you want?"

This isn't just limited to regular Seiko. Grand Seiko's marketing talks about how they're regulated to better-than-chronometer, but their target spec that's actually in the owner's manual calls for -5/+10 seconds per day for a non-high beat mechanical movement. (High beat is -1/+8)
Imagine spending that much for a Grand Seiko, having it gain 10 seconds per day and being told to be happy with that?

For a while it only happened with Rolex and even then only with the super-popular models.
Since the watch market boomed it's been happening to a bunch of other brands as well.

That said, though, Patek has ALWAYS played fuck-fuck games with their customers.
They keep real close track of the second hand market and if they see your watch for sale, they will refuse to sell you any more.
For the really interesting complications and limited edition pieces, if you haven't demonstrated your enthusiasm for the brand going back years, don't even bother asking.

Well Patek is doing it to avoid what is happening with Rolex. Patek doesn't mind vintage Pateks going for a fortune at auction, but they know it's not good for their image if a brand new piece sells to some guy for 100k and he immediately turns around and sells it for 300k to some other guy who couldn't get it from the AD.

It's their version of trying to prevent the gray market bullshit that currently makes the Rolex scene so insufferable.

Let's be honest, at this point Patek are purely made for speculation. Only a small percentage of Patek are actually worn by their owners, the vast majority of them just sit in bank safes waiting to be sold.
That's insane when you think about it... To have the chance of buying one, you have to belong to a club. The rite of passage to join the club is to spend thousands of $/€ on watches that don't hold their value. That means the value of the Patek you'll end up buying will cover the drop of value of the other watches you had to buy, and you'll still make a benefit.

>Why the fuck is JLC considered lower tier than Patek in the first place.
Mostly because JLC's history is that of a quasi-engineering firm in the watch world instead of watchmakers themselves.
JLC is nearly as famous for their own products as they are for putting the movements in other people's watches.

Think about it, people gush about some vintage VC or PP or Cartier
>It's even got a JLC movement!
more than they gush about actually owning a JLC itself.

As an owner of a couple of them, I get where they're coming from. JLCs tend to be plain and understated on the outside. When they do try to do something stylish, it ends up being a chaotic mess, even if the movements themselves are always great.

tl;dr: JLCs are for movement nerds.

So, as soon as this thing arrived, it was missing the battery clamp screw, and was just generally fucking filthy inside, luckily the battery clamp screw that the seller said was "missing" turned out to just be wedged between the movement ring and dial (epic), so I managed to fit a battery and the stepper motor fired up briefly before stopping and showing 0 signs of life. I figured it could maybe be corroded pick-ups on the bottom of the electronics module, so I removed it and noticed how blackened some of the wheels are. From here, I fitted the electronics module back onto the movement and proceeded to disassemble the other part of the movement to explore further and it just gets worse.

wat

the screw head is to set alignment and allow handling with watchmakers tools during first install.

This is a threaded rod that mates to anchors on the back of the case, the hex head interlocks with the case so you can tighten the caseback without risk of causing visual damage to the front side of the fixture.

This is an evolution over the strategy used by our lord and saviour GG on the IWC Ingenieur.

>this is dishonest engineering.
no, just confusing engineering lol

>but why?
The whole point of this strategy is to avoid tapping a thread into the case itself, which would wear over time and after many services mean that the case itself would need to be replaced. With this approach, you simply replace this fixture. It's the same strategy as crown tubes for screw-down crowns, where the tube itself is replaceable so that when it eventually wears, you don't need a new case - just a new tube.

Submariner no date is the god tier, patrician's choice, and anyone who deliberately passes on a date sub for a no date sub is hard confirmed for having excellent taste. There are some bad choices on this list though.

>Daytona not top tier (ruined by the wankers who own them but still top tier)
>Sky dweller not shit tier (wonky proportions, unintuitive design)

If you really want to take your game to the next level you would add air-king to the secretly god tier list. It triggers rolex fanboys because you don't have to slay a dragon or let the AD butt fuck your wife to get one and it's hideous, nonsensical dial design is a disgrace to the brand. Yet, this trainwreck of a watch is still executed to insane rolex standards in every way besides design and as a result it has a strange allure due to it's general retardedness. Take the oddball air-king pill, ascend to the next level.

At least Omega aren't run by a bunch of slimey assholes who gladly look the other way as your AD asks for a blowey before he will even THINK of putting you on a wait list.
Omega might have cringe advertising I grant you that, but the watches are great and you can actually by them without getting a bareback colonoscopy in the back seat of some wagey's car
