I think it really depends on how often you expect to wear the particular item, and also if you intend to wear clothes that you currently own. I wash t-shirts after one use (plus maybe one workout wear or other smell-insensitive application). Underwear one wear. Pants once a week if I wore them during that week, but I usually wear them two or three times during that week. I have some cotton and polyester jackets I barely ever wash (maybe like every three months if I get worried that The Stunch is upon them). I have some wool pants that I can get away with dry-cleaning maybe once a summer, once a winter.

How do you go about culling a wardrobe full of amazing yet clearly AMBITIOUS pieces??
I have hoarded way too many clothes, its at a pretty bad state where I can't fit the clothes I ACTUALLY wear into my wardrobe so i'm just existing in a pit of floordrobe. I'm having a really hard time even mentally just trying to push through it.
Basically I'd love to just wear the same few outfits everyday and stick to that. As much as I love fashion, all these pieces I've picked up never even see the light of day and I feel like I just bought them because of an idea of what I WANTED to dress like versus how I actually dress and the style I actually gravitate most to.

I basically just want to go full cartoon character mode. But I'm so sentimental and optimistic about pieces.

How do I get that musky basement smell out of old clothes? I bough a few jackets and shirts from an online military surplus store and they smell terrible, like they've been laying in a damp, moldy basement for years (which they probably have). I first tried to air them outside but it did nothing, so I washed one of the jackets once and the smell was still there and then I washed it again another time and let it hang outside for 2 more days and the smell still isn't gone. It also made my washing machine smell like shit.

I don't want to send them back because I probably have to pay for shipping and handling myself so I'd rather just try and clean them.

can't be of much help on the musty smell on army surplus clothes, if they have some sort of water-proofing that aroma might be locked in -- i suppose you could get them dry-cleaned ?
but as to your washing machine itself, do an empty run at high-temperature with bleach, and always leave the door open when you're not using it
(the closed door doesn't allow the machine to dry out, and can develop really bad odours due to pooled water)

ok, this is gonna sound a bit weird, and it's more of a suggestion rather than a sure-fire fix, but you 'could' try smoking them; locking them in a closet with burning joss-sticks for a couple of days
in a sense you'd be fighting fire with fire, and introducing an even heavier aroma to the mix -- but i suppose you'd need to source an incense that you really like, and enough of it to keep smoking for a day or two
