I'm not saying there isn't merit to short hair, I'm just saying that a full on bleach and buzzcut might be a bit of an overcorrection. You can cut hair but you can't force it to regrow fast, maybe just try a short cut and if you don't like it then go full buzzcut.

But anyway that alone doesn't make much of a difference in my experience. The only thing that really prevents dandruff, flaking and itching completely is using head & shoulders every day, but that dries out my hair like fuck. I need a good conditioner or hair mask but I don't know where to look

Brushing helps both spread the oils from the roots to the tips and even everything out. But it also helps everything breathe better rather than having hair clump up. Oh and helps remove old skin cells.
I wash my hair once or twice a week, but I brush it once every day.

I brush it once every day after walking up.

After washing and towel drying, I do brush it once(it's a gentle detangler) to help it dry faster by not having clumps of wet hair, and maximize air flow.

>I'm afraid rubbing the scalp like that will cause dandruff
Listen, your skin is constantly growing and sheding. The only reason you notice it on your head vs say your arm, is because it sheds in single cells on your arm, and in bigger collections of cells on your head. Normal cell cycle is like a month, when skin is damaged or irritated it can go through that cycle in a week, and thus becomes more noticeable.

>I washed only with cold water for two weeks a few months back and didn't see any difference, it was extremely itchy.

Sure, but the point is that your brushing helps things breathe, spread oils and flake off excess old skin.
It also shouldn't itch.
>No idea. I eat fish regularly.
That doesn't mean much, you could be eating shit fish, or you could be getting quality omega 3 from fish but then drown it out with shitloads of omega 6 from other sources.
>Not sure, I have IBS if that matters. But I've had dandruff for 10 years so it's not a recent thing
oh boy.
anyway, if you had it for 10 years and you wash it daily with anti dandruff shampoo, it's clearly not working and I would look into fixing your diet for the IBS and inflammation, and do the advise I suggested with the no shampoo thing.
It takes at least a month to achieve anything and it took me like 6 months or something before I could definitely say that "yes this is a lot better than when I used to use shampoo"
which is why I suggested it to people who are desperate to fix their shit, because nobody normal will be willing to try no shampoo for that long unless the shit they have been trying to years doesn't work for them.

>Also what do you think of using conditioner for the shine and smell, and nourishing the hair
No. The whole point is that you let your head do it's own thing and regulate the oils so it's not constantly overproducing shit.
Stripping off your natural oils and then "conditioning" it because it's too dry seems to me like the most jewish thing possible.
The whole point of no shampoo is that your don't strip excess oils from your hair.
Again, the more your head freaks out about being dry, the more it will try to pump out oils to remedy it, and then you have this retarded peaks and valleys.

your scalp might recover in a month, but the shit hair will remain shit until the new hair replaces it.

You let the towel soak up the water, then brush it with a detangler to seperate the hair into more strands to increase the drying speed. That's what I do.
But what I'm telling you is that there doesn't seem to be much point in dragging the towel across the hair in a rough manner.

Again, a dry towel will soak up a lot of the water, keep rotating patches of dry towel to maximum absorption speed.
The last bit can dry by itself especially if you brush it into sperate strands that increases the surface to air ratio and makes it dry faster.
>Doesn't it also make fungus more likely to appear
Anon... you are really opening a can of worms on this one.
Okay here we go.
First off, your skin if constantly colonized by some bacteria, or some fungus.
In fact, the fungus that causes dandruff and that you kill off with your shitty shampoos, has been part of humans for a very long time. Everybody has it(except those that kill it off briefly) even the people without dandruf have it. The key difference is that in the people without dandruf, it's in "balance" it colonizes your scalp, eats some of the oils, poops out some other fats out, and those don't irritate your scalp usually unless there is too much of it and other reasons.
Your skin, is really no different than your gut biome. You think that eating antibiotics day and night will fix you, it wont.
Same thing applies here.
>but why not just wipe out tthe fungus that casuses dandruff instead of living in simbiosis with it?
becuase there is no such thing as an empty space in nature.
You wipe out all the bacteria in your gut with antibiotics, you now eat some sugary shit and the bad bacteria multiply and take over (they were suppressed by the good bacteria before)
Same thing with your scalp. The shit that causes you dandruff, is actually relatively harmless and keeps other shit at bay by taking up space.

The same way you don't eat antibiotics in one hand and then consume lots of probiotics daily to have a healthy gut.
You don't stip the oils off your head and nuke any living lifeform there only to with the other hand start "moisturizing it" with conditioner and other shit.

Can anyone smarter than me explain what's going on? I'm a young male and I recently got into styling my hair, I've been using a blow dry gel with sea salt spray alongside the occasional bit of volume powder for 2 months or so. I just towel dry until damp and then brush it back with a blow dryer on it.
Over the past like 4 weeks I've noticed the hair around my middle part (which is where I part my hair) is sparse as fuck, and I can even see my scalp under it. The somewhat curled and high rising hair I had around this part is now just dead and flat and refuses to cooperate, plus it looks like shit.
As far as I know from trying to find threads about this and only getting articles and threads for women, and I don't think this is how male pattern baldness begins, is it?
Shit's freaking me out, help bros... do I see a doctor or something? Right when I start to care about my hair too.

Two things, if you've never bothered with styling and products much, don't overwhelm yourself with too much stuff at once, you won't know the effect of each product on your hair and you'll just make a mess. Maybe sea salt doesn't work with your hair type and is making it look dead, maybe it's the powder. The other thing is don't panic, you couldn't have caused permanent damage over two months unless you were literally blowtorching your head and rubbing sea salt into your scalp. A lot of guys who start growing their hair out to style it start noticing their whorl, hair part, more broken hair strands and panic thinking that they're suddenly balding. Try shampooing your hair to clear out product and leave it alone for a while, maybe just blowdry it gently if needed. If after a week or two you still think it looks wrong, go see a doc, maybe you were thinning already but you didn't notice it, but way more likely is that you're just obsessing. Don't freak out and don't give up on it.

Not him, but I have very, very thin hair. It's prone to high levels of frizz and drying out. I usually wash once a week, it feels like the uh, natural oils help to tame the frizz and make it look more nourished than freshly washed & conditioned.

should i be washing twice a week regardless?

>> No.17061453

if you have thin hair it can get that slick oily look very fast especially if its long, which isnt ideal, unless you want the cobain grunge look. but yeah i would say as a general thing i will wash my hair twice a week. if your hair is oily just try every second day. your hair will eventually stop producing so much oil. the shampoo strips the natural oils and so your scalp tries to make up for it.

honestly it takes a while, i'd say at least three nights before it looks like anything other than a floof cloud. I used to leave my hair two or three, sometimes more weeks between washes, but since growing it long I've tried to keep to weekly. Thanks for the advice tho, i'll give twice a week a good go, it's not the first time i've heard thats how long hair is usually done

bros my hair is a mess. i don't know the first thing about hair care, i just wash it with shampoo every other day but i can't seem to make any foam AT ALL it's like trying to wash a brick wall, i distribute it around my hair and it's still like dry and not shampooey like if it disappeared or something idk how the hell to explain it. after i wash it it's like stiff and compacted and it looks oily like if i hadn't washed it or didn't rinse well enough and still have shampoo or something, no matter how meticulously i do it.
i thought maybe this was because i was either using too much or too little, but it doesn't matter how much, or how little i use, it's always the same result.
the day after it looks better for some reason, but then by the next day, when im gonna wash it again (like for example wednesday if i washed it on monday) it looks oily and on top of that it gets pretty itchy. what do i do??? this didn't happen in the past, i used to have nice hair PLS help me out.

Haven't used it though I read a lot of no shampoo users use it as a substitute.
I personally haven't had a need for it.
If I don't wash my head with anything, the oils can keep the dead skin cells a bit more sticky so they don't drop off easily by themselves.
But washing with water, removes excess oils, washes off some off the dead cells and the rest are more easily removed by brushing or wind or whatever.

Don't use shampoo or conditioner ever.
If it gets too oily, wash head with cool water finishing off with cold. Wash it like that 1-2 times a week, more if you need to.
IT will never strip of as much oil from your hair as shampoo and thus you get that 2 days in effect all the time.

Using cool/chilly and finishing of with cold.
Ensures that excessive oils don't get washed off and less of it gets stripped off during drying.
Again I know the feel of 2days in hair becoming more tame and lush, less dry. It feels great.
Which is the main reason I don't use shampoo and conditioner and other shit.

Ever notice how swiming in a cool lake doesn't cause your skin to bloat up in your fingers? But taking a warm shower/bath does?
Same thing happens to your hair.
Not only does it open up the structures, oils and the like more easily strip when they are warm.
Think of trying to brush off oil from your dishes when you ran cold water over it, vs when you ran hot water over it.

Using cool, chilly, cold water, minimizes opening the structure and stripping oils both.
