Split Toe Edition

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

It's a niche thing. I was researching the same thing (welted/stiched boots) a few months back.
I assume you're in North America, then your options are limited. Off top of my head I can only think of Danners or Limmer boots.
I think this shits is more of a european thing.
As of using work boots such as Nicks/Whites/etc for hiking, yes you can definitely do that, at least for day hikes. I wore my Urban Loggers the last time I went on a day hike. It's fine, but definitely won't use it for multi day shit. It certainly reduces you range.

Yes, there's always some small brand/label that makes these boots and market these in the US, but like you said, it's really hard to find any good info (construction, materials used, etc).
Outside of the two I mentioned (Danner, Limmer), look for european brands. The ones that I know of that are welted:
Zamberlan Latemar (norwegian welted, leather lined)
Zamberlan Tofane (norwegian welted, goretex lined)

"I reached out to Thursday and was offered an exchange but I'm not interested in another pair of boots. The company asked me for a review but then they never put it on their website but I thought the internet should know.

The new boots that I ordered smelled terrible with a gross chemical smell that made me and my partner physically ill. She actually threw up from the smell and it took days for the house to clear the smell even with the boots airing out on the front porch.

When I told them about the smell they had the audacity to tell me that it was just the natural leather. ive been a leather worker for decades and that smell was not leather. a quick google search of "chemical smell of Thursday captains" will give you a ton of anecdotal experiences. Do yourself a favor and buy something else.

They are unwearable."

it's a pretty reasonable assumption that Thursdays buyers are new to boots.

So you have this strange perception where you have one side of Thursday buyers saying, "this is normal smell, this is how leather smells!", and the other side saying, "This is some rancid chemical smell". The latter quote being accurate, and the former quote being spouted by those who don't know any better.

As scummy and corner-cutting as Thursday Boot Co is, you gotta hand it to 'em, they really take advantage and benefit from their target demographics own stupidity.

After almost two years of not wearing them I decided to wear them again seeing as they were collecting dust in my closet and I have to say they're really not that bad. The heel is too fucking big, but other than that these seem to be pretty decent boots especially seeing as I got them for 200 dollars. There's literal retards who spend that much on sneakers. I wore Danner boots for years before joining the national guard and the first boots I bought after basic training were the tachyons. Unironically the only boots I've ever returned, the upper collapses right into your ankle and chafes to hell. It makes me nervous about trying their other /k/ shit.

I responded with a question about what this is (glue from the resole, maybe?) but haven't received a reply yet.

Cold countries still use them, and the synthetic stuff just disintegrates over time. Cost/usage ratio comes into play, and being able to buy veg-tan double leather midsole army boots from the 70s-80s for $33 USD is great. Handsewn welt and all, God bless Austria.
>>17050056
The problem is that they’re not very substantial for the price. You’re just paying for the name at that point. Hell, just buy Wescos with the money. It’s actually all leather, not just cheap cork padding that turns to dust.

>> No.17050144

$350 is perfectly fine for a sufficient build quality, they certainly won't perish into dust like clarks or thursdays as long as you aren't dumb enough to buy the heritage line expecting work grade boots.

as an owner of IR i find their arch support to be lacking and the celastic toe to be too bulbous and rubbing the tops of my toes (not enough vertical clearance and going up sizes did not change a thing). It's why I moved on up to the Whites for better arch support and the far more comfortable unstructured toe

Can somebody recommend me some leather boots that are more classic/dressy, since I'll be wearing them with wool slacks (maybe a suit occasionally). Should also be somewhat lowish budget. I frankly don't have a clue about boots, but I want something sturdier than my dress shoes.

I used to work at a shoe store and the Sperry boots were shit, even cheaper feeling than Sorrell. If you want duck boots just get the bean boots, they keep water out better than most duck boots, they are sturdier than most duck boots, they're US made, and they'll replace the lower for like $45 when it wears out.
