Seriously though, the first thing you need to know is your body measurements. Fits are the most important part. Explore different silhouettes, appreciate materials. If you have the chance, go look at what's on the racks in higher end stores. Get a feel of the weight and texture of the fabric, the hardware, the construction. When you try stuff on in stores, look for clothes that are similar to stuff you already own to pair it with. For example, you're looking for a pair of wool trousers, also rake a red sweater that's kinda like the one in your closet to see how looks with it. This will also give you the opportunity to compare the things mentioned above regarding quality of material and construction with what you are familiar with.
If you're in a high end store just trying stuff in for fun, when the clerk asks you if you'll take it, tell you're looking for something similar, but in purple with yellow rhinestones and red polkadots. Rich people have terrible taste and always have ridiculous demands.
The go at the thrift store and look for similar quality pieces now that you know what to look for. Ignore brands. The are second hand shops in Paris that completely remove labels and that forces you to look for these details which is actually quite helpful and curbs your tendency to be a consumer whore.
