Alright, I'll repost it here then.

To the anon asking about the choodah last thread, you can find them for around 1500 euroshekels. Be careful, apparently they are faked quite often, so read up before buying and ask the seller any questions you have before you buy. In the pic it has an aftermarket bracelet with solid links, if it's sold on an oyster bracelet it should have 361B hollow endlinks and 7835B folded bracelet. The reference of the watch is 74000N and comes in many dial variations.

powermatic has 2 variants, and the swatch group is not very forthcoming with their details

-its based on the old ETA 2824, but with beat rate reduced from 28800 to 21600 to get extra power reserve (which nobody cares about, 99.99% of people will prefer higher beat rate)
-its kinda hard to regulate, it seems like they dont really want you to open the watch up
-powermatic 80.111- 23 jewels has plastic escapement, not steel. These movements are essentially disposable. The plastic will get brittle over time and inevitably snap one day. You are essentially getting a mini system51. The escapement(pallet fork) is a critical part of an mechanical movement and will be constantly moving while the movement is in motion
-there is a newer version of the powermatic, with a proper escapement, not plastic shit. It has 25 jewels. This is the powermatic you should get if you want one

I generally agree with this. The few very very rich people I know don’t care much about watches. The people I know who DO care about watches come from wealthy families and have relatively high but nowhere near 7 figure incomes.

I know wealthy people who don't know shit about watches or care about them too. Like I know a guy whose whole family has been wealthy for generations, he doesn't even have to work but he does for the hell of it, and hardly anyone in his family wears a watch. He wears a Citizen and he said he might get a Rolex in the future but he doesn't know how much they cost. I've met middle class guys on the other hand who are watch fanatics and owned either multiple luxury watches or collected special edition G-Shocks.
Watches are just niche as fuck in general. You either like them or you don't and wealth has little to do with it.

no, you dont *get* it
the calatrava is just the calatrava, but the Eicii II is something else

>This is an interesting take, but I disagree. I would contend first of all that abstraction does not signify a lack of assigned meaning. The beauty of Eichi II does not lie in polyvalent interpretation but in its harmony and modulation of subtle meanings. The text is not just text on the dial; the typeface carries feeling which is complemented by the deep blue indices, by the subtle interplay of straight and curved lines on the hands, by the diffusion of light on porcelain. There is both bold elegance and restraint. Indeed, the whole watch is moonlike in its appearance, softly glowing with a platinum corona. It is possible to decode the abstraction here because it is full of intended meaning and, crucially, the moon strengthens this reading. The curve of the crescent moon is referenced in the other hands and is complemented by the typeface. A symbol of cyclical change, often conjured in waka on chilly autumn nights. The moon glides ceaselessly through the seasons, the years, ever propelled by the Spring Drive.

the dark colourway is like the inky sky, and the moon a shimmering silver crescent.
It is a simple design, but like a haiku it has depth

Why are you even talking about haute horlogerie watches if you don't have any understanding of what goes into their external finishing and movement finishing? The Calatrava is not finished on anything like the same level as a micro-artist studio Credor and doesn't deserve to mentioned in the same breath.

Credor's micro-artist studio pieces are finished to standards more comparable to high-end independent watchmakers, and manufactured in similarly small quantities for the same reason.

Your problem is that you assume you design preferences are universal, but that's a silly way to evaluate watches. Taste is, up to a point, subjective. Micro-artist studio Credors are hand made and finished to a standard comparable to high end independents, which is why a watch like the Eichi II is priced at $50k.

Just as one example, the movement on the Eichi II features curved anglage in the same style as Dufour's, because Dufour literally taught them how to do it by hand, manually, using polishing compound on pieces of flexible wood. In case you are unaware, manually polishing anglage that way takes many times the labour of the flat type of anglage that can mostly be polished used hand held powered buffing tools.

You don't have to like the design to be able to understand why the watches are priced the way they are. Aesthetically I can't stand virtually any of F.P. Journe's designs but that doesn't stop me from recognizing the obvious quality and ingenuity with which they are made.

Just design, and I understand the little japs work for years on a piece to get the blue just the right way and wooden spatulas to polish shit. What I dont understand is WHO CHOOSES to buy a credor. Its subjective, but the credor doesnt impress me enough to ever consider purchasing, and I wonder who would choose one over a Lange or Patek or god forbid if we go into independant haute, which btw - there are better Japanese watches at that price point. Much better. Better objectively. Someone clearly does buy these pieces but it confuses me who exactly.

As far as I know, most Credors are still sold domestically, so for the most part I assume the answer would be Japanese people. Micro-artist studio watches are made in relatively tiny volumes so they don't need to sell that many of them to keep the place busy. Also, some people just like really minimal designs. I mean, people also buy $25k H. Moser & Cie watches with no dial markings at all.

Personally, I'd be more likely to want an ALS Saxonia, but to each their own.

-the seiko snk is a $100 37mm flieger/field hybrid. However it has a mediocre entry movement, very basic WR (only 30) and mineral glass. You can however mod-upgrade it in the future
-glycine combat 6 is 36mm, comes with sapphire and 50wr. But this is also pre invicta glycine and its not produced anymore...you can try to find.
-marathon has the 34mm mechanical GPM (WW194003) . However it is above $200 and its also plastic case(fibreshell). However it has a very strong simple AF no-frills field watch look, was issued to the military afaik, and has SW200 movement inside. Longislandwatch has it at $288

Yes. Breitling's have trash external finishing for the price. Their cases and bracelets are all lozenged to hell from being polished with high speed buffing wheels by trained monkees and they tend to use cheap looking flat, stamped hands without cleaning up the edges at all, their dial printing is usually cheap stenciling rather than richer looking pad printing,

For the money Breitling wants for this watch, I'd unironically take a new Moonwatch instead. The Moonwatch has a free sprung silicon balance, better external finishing, and is cheaper.

The ‘57 is so good but would be perfect if it had a ceramic bezel, the “master coaxial” calibre 9900, and was slightly thinner.

I was definetly going to put it on a two piece strap, I honestly hate nato straps, the extra material and making the case so high really turns me off them. I might go a rubber strap, but I would prefer something with a relatively small buckle, since at work I pull a plastic bag made of PVA over plaster or 3d printed moulds and poor resin into them, really easy to fuck up 8 hours worth or work and $100 worth of carbon fibre by having your watch buckle put a hole in the bag

I have thought about that, but since perlon is so absorbent, if a drop of rain gets on it, it soaks in straight away and then goes hard when it sets and starts to put a hole in the strap, I can do leather, nylon and rubber, think I'll buy a canvas strap and hopefully a replacement strap for a g shock square fits it, they have a nice spring bar on them that makes a change real quick

Cal. 1045 Speedmasters are fantastic, but the desirability of Lemania 5100 powered vintage chronographs means that they are fairly pricey these days if you want one in decent condition.

The good news is that parts availability for these movements remains very good, and as long as the one you buy is in good working order when you get it, these movements tend to be extremely reliable. The chronograph reset spring tends to weaken over time though, so expect to eventually have to replace it unless a previous buyer did it already.

Also, if you are getting it serviced by an independent watchmaker make sure they understand to not put the delrin parts into the ultrasonic cleaner or they will destroy them.

Breilting probably makes the best chronograph movement that's on the market (B01).

Whoever claimed that was retarded. The B01 uses a regulated balance, flat hairspring, and a balance cock. That arrangement is objectively inferior to a free sprung balance, overcool, and balance bridge as in the 4130.

They both use column wheel arrangements and vertical clutches, and there is no history of issues with the 4130's vertical clutch design, so I don't see any advantage there for the B01.

Did you actually listen and understand the details of what he said? He said the B01 is more advanced in terms of modularity. While that's useful to a watch company wanting to be able to add and remove sections of the movement to use in more watches, it doesn't have any benefits for its use as a complete unit in chronographs.

Also, that watchmaker was talking about the movements being comparable in terms of reliability, while I'm pointing out that the B01 is objectively worse in terms of accuracy and resistance to shocks.

The problem here is that you were parroting his comments stripped of their context.
