>be multi billion dollar swiss company
>threaten to sue a small fried chicken stall ran by a BIPOC

>A local ayam penyet hawker playfully spoofed Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet’s logo and tagline, and ended up having to watch his words when the latter served up a lawyer’s letter citing trademark infringement.
>Nornizam ‘Nizam’ bin Amin, 49 is a watch enthusiast who owns halal food stall 'Rayyan’s Waroeng Upnormal' at Amoy Street Food Centre. “I can’t afford all those luxury watches, but I do love watching them,”. The hobby horologist also has a sideline business making customised watches from OEM parts. As his Ayam Penyet (fried chicken) shares the same acronym as the luxury watch brand, Nizam had the idea to create a fun graphic riffing on the famous AP logo for his stall’s staff uniform. “My friend’s friend is a graphic designer based in Jakarta, so I communicated with him and he came up with this,” he shares.
>The brand’s original tagline of “le maître de l'horlogerie depuis 1875 (the master of watchmaking since 1875)” was also modified to become “le maître du poulet frit depuis 2014 (the master of fried chicken since 2014)”.
>Late last year, Nizam printed the logo on a small batch of T-shirts and stickers for his pals, and displayed the sticker at his stall. It quickly went viral online . Netizens were tickled by Nizam’s wit, with some requesting to buy his ‘AP’ T-shirt.

Watchmakers brand is literally all they have to sell their overpriced trinkets. That's why they're so butthurt if it is devalued or mocked in some way.

If it was illegal to put brand names on watches prices and the market would instantly plummet. Since people would start buying for practicality and features.

Is there any dive watch that is as timeless as the sub. It seems to look good on absolutely everything and dressy or casual. Have i just be conditioned into thinking that.

Are there any alternatives (sub 1k preferably) that are as versatile.

I hate myself for liking it as much as I do. In general I'm not a rolex fan boy and I don't want to spend the next 5 years buying cellinis to earn goodboy points to buy one.

Since the Rolex Submariner is the Fender Stratocaster of the watch world there's hundreds of tributes and homages out there for any budget that look pretty much like the Sub. Depending on how close or original you want your ripoff to be they can be had for way under 1k USD. Steinhart basically does nothing but decent homages to all kinds of Rolexes for the ~500 USD bracket.
Original designs under that number are basically dominated by Seiko, Citizen and Casio.

You could argue whether there is a decent alternative to a submariner at any price point. Nothing below $1k will even come close. If you like the idea of the sub which used to be a real diver with a reliable movement at a reasonable price, buy a Tudor BB58.

You probably won’t be happy with it though. Just save your money and get raped on the second hand market for a sub. It’s a lot less cucked than bending over for an AD.

And see if any of those are acceptable to you.
Otherwise under 1k is pretty slim pickings, microbrands, homages, weird ugly stuff.
Personally i would recommended looking at the sin 556/series and damasko watches, they arent divers but they are versatile tool watches that will go with lots of outfits.

AR is nice, but it would not be a deal breaker for me if I liked everything else about a watch. Not all AR coating is created equal either. I've had watches with crappy AR that looked worse than watches without it. Good AR coating is pretty great though, Seiko has done a fantastic job with that on their SARX line.

I've been repairing watches for a year now and finally got annoyed with rolling the cleaned mainsprings in by hand (it's not good practice anyway) and pulled the trigger on a mainspring winder. It's one of the only tools that both have a lot of use even for a hobbyist, and still really have no decent budget options (there are chinese clones of the insanely expensive bergeon tools, that are just somewhat expensive and the quality is apparently not great). So vintage and adjustable it is, should be enough for my needs. Still probably most expensive single tool I have, especially for the size.

It's gone off vintage inspired watches like the BB58, in years to come I think they will be the mullets of the watch world. Yea I'm planing a Reverso next year just need to pick my ref. Thought about the new speedmaster, I have the micro adjustable clasp so the new bracelet gripes me with 1 adjustment......

I could live without a diver to be far. GS is perfect and the Orion is better in person, it's case is like a pebble and dial is very dynamic.

It’s a mall brand with weak design language that does horribly on the second hand market. They spend too much money on celebrity endorsements and not enough on their watches.

However, last year they made the best decision of the last decade by headhunting Carole Forestier-Kasapi from Cartier. She was the head of their innovative movements division since 99 and was behind the push for Cartier to move from a jeweler to bonafide movement manufacturer. She even got Cartier to produce a Geneva Seal (!!!) watch in 2008. She’s also responsible for virtually all their HH watches of which there are surprisingly many.

They also recently got a fresh, young CEO - but he is untested. Who knows what direction he’ll take the brand, but anything is better than what they’re doing now. If he just lets Forestier work then they’ll probably be a serious brand in the next 5 years.

I'm much more of a field/aviator guy with regards to every day wear, the only other watch on my radar at present is one of Yema's new(ish) Flygraf M1 watches because the size and aesthetic just do something for me. Probably done buying watches for the foreseeable future beyond that though. As far as dress watches, my two Seikos keep me content on that front.

What's sad is that one or two of those watches in a sensible collection would look fine. But all 4 of them together? It's just soulless consumerism with no thought given beyond 'I need the popular watches'.

What's even more terrifying is the idea that this guy doesn't even realise he made bland crowdpleasing decisions. The man who buys 4 reddit watches is sad, but the guy who buys 4 reddit watches without even understanding why his taste is so terrible? I'd rather be dead.

This is my first reply to you, it's other anons, I've had a lot of watches 40+ and I know what I like now oh and the 231 is the best GS they make. The 231 and orion are not even that popular. You relate simple classic designs with soulless......

I honestly think my collection is personal to me, you don't know my history or thought / buying process, I wanted a speedy for the history, before I was into watches I had my eye on it, stroke a cord with me as I'm a huge sicfi / nasal fan. My Dad had pre moon speedy before I was born, which he flooded diving!!! Boomers! and I only found out after I was set on getting one, the orion was the first nice watch I wanted to buy myself but didn't have the money so I bought a CW C5 Malvern MkII in Uni for £370 and now the Orion is a very satisfying watch for me to own now, I never liked any GS watches but I feel in love with the 231 instantly, I have had a few vintage omegas but they are a headaches, I like the PP calatrava but the design isn't perfect (dates or somethings off), the GS is 2 birds with 1 stone and better than both aesthetically in my options. Seamaster I upgraded from the older blue ref which was a mistake maybe but it was a £500 different as my old 300m needed a service still working on that one and how I feel about it 75% love it.

I just think you always go to no soul comment by default, I think it was you to when I posted my Sekio turtle in my collection years ago and I bought that I Japan in a wee cosy family used watch shop. I'd have more respect for you if you posted your collection with your post.

Like another anon said earlier, "the man makes the watch." It's the stories, experiences, and the sentimentality of watches that so many of us love. The "objective" aspects are merely secondary. Why did Paul Newman's Daytona attract nearly $18 million at auction? It had little to do with the actual model of watch or its technical specifications or its condition or even its rarity (other examples of the exact Rolex Daytona reference go for 50x less). It was because of who owned it and the particular story and meaning attached to it.

I've only been on /wt/ for a few weeks and have noticed several of your posts. I'm glad to hear you say your watch collection is personal to you. It should be! In my opinion, it shouldn't be about anything else.

I have considered posting my collection of watches here a few times (which I am rather proud of), but I've decided against it because every piece I have has a meaningful story attached to it and I don't want any anonymous troll to try to taint my view of my own watches.

I kinda hate what is becoming of "watch culture." Watches are being covered and reviewed online as if they're any other piece of consumer shit, like phones or computers or electric toothbrushes or whatever else. It's disheartening.

But they are, and always have been.

The difference is that watches back in the past, and some cheap shitters today, performed a function. People don't spend a ten grand on a watch now because it does anything better than other watches, they do it just to consume.

Modern watches are so soulless because they're just glorified jewellery.

Based. Great publicity for Ayam Man. The thing in Asia is that if this isn't taken care of, next week there'll be an 'AP' boutique on every corner. I remember going to an RL store in Bali ten years ago, probably a third of their shit was fake to make some money on the side.

Literally nothing but rolex and maybe a handfull of random limited edition g-shocks or or limited edition seikos and that's only if you keep em in the box and don't wear them.
Just get one of these

that is true but the compass is an integral part of the quirky dork appeal of the alpinist. Without the compass a lot of the character is gone. Its "just another field watch" in a moldy catalog of field watches.

its like the raketa windrose without the compass. Nobody buys this model.

this is kinda an aside to this specific model, but since I've had my SARB017 modded to have a higher bph fairly easily with parts from a 6r20/NE20 it does kinda annoy me theres no 28,800bph watch thats under 2k new in Seikos inventory.
I dunno about the rest of you guys but I could give a fuck about an additional 20 hr power reserve when it already has 50. Especially if it's an everyday wearer like the way these watches are being pitched. Just my 2 cents.

only select memewatches like the sarb017/skx007, popular gshocks that are out of production(that grey casioak) or very limited edition microbrands(zelos etc) will hold value. The rest all loses value to varying degrees.

its not a real reason to choose a watch anyway
especially not at that price point
just get a watch you love and forget about "value retention", you'll be much happier wearing it.

at $700 its up against all sorts of competition. Its helpless without the compass. Why get it when you can get a fuyugeshiki presage, a baltic aquascaphe or a marathon MSAR. You could literally get the old alpinist for $700. Nobody gives a shit about the extra 20 hours of power reserve.

>memed so hard
it's a cult watch. bit like the sword hand Omega 2254.50 but way more popular.
>it's "heritage" is blown out of proportion
it's a line of watches going back forever but it only became 'the' alpinist that anyone actually gives a shit about in the 90's with the 4s15 versions. Still makes it more of a heritage product than half the watches that ppl schill on the internet and way more 'heritage' than possibly anything under 1k ignoring hamilton.

WATCH BEAT TIERS:

Top tier:
3600 bph. What more can you say? Obviously, this is assuming perfect alignment. The ultimate in watch making quality, a perfect dead seconds movement.

Great tier:
Infinite bph spring drive. Barely even counts because it doesn't beat, but still.

Good tier:
1-2.5 million bph tuning forks. These are pretty good.

Alright tier:
57600 bph. Not great, but alright for a shitter.

Meh tier:
36000 bph. Just barely usable.

Literal dogshit, how the fuck can you live with something this awful tier:
7200-28800 bph. What are you, poor?

It's some random micro brand i ran into looking through old worn and wound articles. They have been around since at least 2016 but i have never heard of them until a few hours ago. They seem legit, since they seem to be making a steady stream of new watches. The price seems about standard for microbrands using a miyota 9000 series movement. It's for sure less risky than some kikestarter from some brand that has never made a watch before, they are supposed to ship soon enough that it will be easy to do a charge back on your credit card if they never deliver.

That a Seiko SUR all the way to the right? I just ordered the SUR317 as a baby-baby-Grand Seiko. What do you think of it? I love the classic Seiko aesthetics and was considering a SARB, but even $400 is too much for a watch in my eyes, especially when you can have almost identical looks from the same company for less. Any way you could throw it on a NATO and take a pic?
