My advice if you want to grow your hair long is avoid cutting it. It will become longer by growing. If you cut it, this will shorten the length, which will prevent it from becoming longer.

I made a challenge last year at the beginning of the Australian border closures that I won't cut my hair until I can travel internationally again.

What's stopping you? Are you working/schooling from home? If so then it doesn't really matter if it looks like shit. At least, that's the reason I started growing it out, more out of curiosity of what it would look like, and lack of inhibitions. Just try it and don’t bitch out when it’s medium length. Then when your bangs get to a decent length get it trimmed and layered then wait 6 more months

It took my like a year and bleaching my hair and a couple cuts to get mine like this

Is there a way to make my hair fall down and flow like other guys? Mine just sticks up and defies gravity. I'm going to keep growing it until I can tie it in a bun (and then cut it if I dont look good in a bun) but that's still a ways off and I'd like to not look so ridiculous the whole time.

Having that said, I don't recommend it. Had long hair for years and it was a pain. If you have an even remotely obsessive or neurotic personality, styling it and keeping it looking decent will drive you insane.
