Got this nice piece for just under 40 bucks from ebay. Pics on ebay were shit but it turned out ro be pretty damn well preserved. near mint. runs very smooth and keeps very good time. i have to open it to remove those black spots from the dial and polish the glass though.
strap is also good (slightly curved springbars, extent to 20mm from 18mm lug) but not exactly my type. any suggestions for a bracelet? i thought the classic president or jubilee would be nice. finding a bracelet with slighty curved endlinks do acommodate the slightly curved lugs would be terrific.

For anyone curious, I got this thing delivered, and one of the coils is gone. Sad times.

On the plus side, I just found a replacement bulova movement for 50 bucks, so hopefully I can just swap some shit in. If not? Well, at least I've got 2 mostly complete movements for a rainy day. Not looking forward to having to disassemble the index wheel assembly if I need to swap in a single working coil, though.

It is so bad that a new steel Daytona is on chrono24 for $30k. You have to be fucking retarded and also utterly lacking any semblance of self-respect to engage in this whole song and dance.

Rolex makes good watches but they're not anywhere near $30k for steel good. I like the watches but I hate the brand and I am slowly becoming contemptuous toward people who buy them. Buying dogshit models to get a chance at what you actually want is just pathetic.

The unfortunate reality is that Rolex carries more brand cache in the eyes of normies than any other watch brand (Patek has some recognition as does Omega but each of them is nowhere near as known). The average schmuck thinks "when I make it, I'll buy a Rolex," not any other watch brand.

At the same time, Rolex sports watches are technically proficient and designed/finished well at their MSRP price points, which makes them respected amongst people who care about those things.

The steel sports models are particularly attractive because at MSRP they are far less expensive than the two tone or precious metal models. They're also more "tough," which watch people like.

Those four things in combination with each other drive demand for steel Rolex sports watches.

Rolex knows this and drives further demand for its watches by creating artificial scarcity. Rolex makes nearly one million watches per year yet trickles its steel sports watches out a few at a time to authorized dealers around the world. An authorized dealer may receive only a dozen or so of each of the core steel Rolex sports watches per year. To handle the massive disparity between the supply of these watches and the demand, the authorized dealers will only sell these watches to so-called "preferred customers." This means that, in order to get one's hands on a steel Rolex sports watch, one either has to have a significant purchasing history of ideally Rolex watches with an authorized dealer or has to acquire one on the secondary market, where prices are as much as 4-5x MSRP.

Objectively speaking, no Rolex sports watch is worth 4-5x MSRP nor is it worth spending nearly as much on "basic" Rolex watches in order to access a single steel sports watch at MSRP.

It is a completely asinine situation that hinges solely on a unique confluence of things that have contributed to Rolex's brand perception.

Put it this way, you can walk into a Vacheron Constantin dealer now, today, and walk about with an Overseas chronograph which in every measurable way (including so-called "subjective" things like movement/bracelet finishing) is superior to a Daytona. You will not only get the watch at MSRP, you will likely get a discount of at least 20%, which is customary amongst the "trinity" high horology manufacturers. This means you will have purchased an objectively superior watch, right away, with no waiting period, at approximately 40% less than a Rolex Daytona on the secondary market and even less than the cumulative cost of all the watches you would have to buy to build up enough purchase history to get a Daytona from an authorized dealer.

BWF makes nice stuff, Sea-gull also makes nice stuff on the high end but it's very directed towards chinese tastes. They have a few of their own tourbillion movements. Really seagull is the way to go, very respectable and one of the largest movement manufacturers in the world.
There are a few other brands that sort of pretend to be swiss that seem decent like lomani.
Agelocer makes some descent looking stuff and they claim to make their own movements that look decent, but i suspect that they are putting a nice plate and winding weight on top of a more standard movement. Pic related in an agelocer movement.

Great job cherry-picking the two examples in which you will not get a discount. I realize it is hard for you troglodytes to understand, but there is more going on in Patek, AP and Vacheron than just Nautiluses, Aquanauts, and Royal Oaks.

Barring any extreme supply issues or memes, you should always be able to negotiate around 15% off for just about anything. You can go higher for brands like Breitling and Omega where ADs have to compete much more actively against grey market sellers. You used to be able to negotiate off around 25% from a solid gold Rolex but those days are long gone.

I want one bros. The fact that I can get one for slightly under retail is tempting, and I will be entering the holy trinity.

I've always been a Nautilus fan, but I'm priced out. I could easily sell some assets and afford this and still be well off, and the more I see this thing the more I go from thinking it's boring and uninspiring to it's more beautiful and unique than the other two.

Do it. It is way more beautiful than the other two. AP is basically a shell of itself at this point; it’s “Royal Oak plus a bunch of other shit: the brand.” Patek has open contempt toward the Nautilus/Aquanaut and frankly, while I like those watches more than the Royal Oak, the designs are aged. The Overseas is a great watch, through and through.

I do too. I love the understated elegance of the Nautilus. The geometric dial, simple indices and second markers. It's unclutered and superbly legible, but the texture and pattern of the blue blindes backing makes the watch. I don't know why, but the rest of the watch doesn't matter at that point. The fact that the rest of it is so thin, elegant and a little flashy makes it my favorite.

The VC has the simple dial dial, but it's still cluttered compared to the PP. The round dial and the bezel at first look tacky but it's grown on me with the way it works with the band. I find the band and casing to be more attractive in a flashy way, and with the vibrant blue lacquer dial it makes the watch pop. It's fun, shiny but still is a simple sport watch like the Nautilus.

I hear that but I figure you could always just plan to wear it a little bit prior to the occasion. It's my first automatic watch so it's my daily wear watch at this point and I haven't really let it run out of reserve yet. Maybe it's more of a pain in the ass than I know.

If you wanted the reference number just in case, the one in the pic is SNKL45J1. There's a cheaper non-jap one, though. Same reference but minus the J1.

Design is about opinion.
Personally, I think the Nautilus is the ugliest of the three, it looks like an old TV screen.
The RO is visually the most interesting, but it's also the most angular, making it less versatile.

About the dials; I agree that the dial on the RO is the most interesting because of the guilloché, but the Nautilus dial is simply stamped. It's not very interesting.
The blue dial Overseas has the same dial finish as the Chronomètre Bleu from FP Journe; one of the absolute hottest watches that came out in the past 20 years.

All things considered, the Overseas is easily the best pick out of the three holy trinity sports watches.
The RO design was a bombshell in its day, but these days it's a staple of nouveau riche douchebags and rappers (the Nautilus almost even more so).

Vacheron is also the only one out of the holy trinity that doesn't pander to those two classes of people with oversized, blinged-out versions.
Instead, Vacheron's idea of a more sporty Overseas is pic related.

Don't get me wrong that blue dial is well executed but it's not great either. It would look fantastic on a dress watch, just like the CB, but all the best and most popular sports watches need something else. It is simply a plain flat dial and it needs something to elevate it to another level apart from a nice finish and color.

By all accounts, it's almost an otherworldly experience to look at; just read some of the reviews of the chronomètre bleu.

>The VC Overseas is an A- watch but to me it suffers from the fact it's competitors are A+.
To me, the Nautilus is a solid B (boring stamped dial, looks like an old TV), while the RO and Overseas are both As.
With the RO being more visually interesting, but too angular and brash; and the Overseas being the perfect match between striking visuals and elegance.

Okay bruh. I've seen it several times along with most of the other Overseas models. I even turned down a Geneva VC boutique-only edition, 50 pieces made, which I've never seen mentioned anywhere online. That was the only Overseas I came close to buying. >Keep in mind that the "entire" movement isn't going to be finished perfectly, despite the VC Overseas 41' 5100 movement having a Geneva Seal.
What do you mean?

Regarding the "Geneva Seal", Vacheron mistakenly calls it the Geneva hallmark, it's a certification that I assume any Swiss mechanical watch can receive if it passes the criteria. The prerequisites are mainly visual and visual and cosmetic based and it doesn't sound extensive; it's absolutely stringent however. My point is, for a 20k watch, not everything is going to receive the same scope of attention, you can expect to see the same quality through and through, but polishing is going to differ. It's only when we start talking about the best of the best from AP, VC and PP that we see attention to detail on EVERYTHING within the movement.

The Geneva Seal applies to all the same things on a $20k watch as it does on a $200k watch.
The level of finishing is going to be the same.

See pic; the anglage, screw polish, Geneva strips, gear finishing, ... are the exact same as on the basic Overseas; there's just more of it because the movement is more intricate and has more parts.

Do some research. That's right. The GS seal's requirements doesn't change from watch to watch. But the requirements are limited in scope and some don't have to do with the movement at all. If I have two watches, one at 25k and the other at say, 125k, and they both have the Geneva Seal but they're completely identical, why is the 125k watch 100k more? Because of what you don't see. Because of the watchmaker spending much more time polishing parts you're never going to see. My two cents. Correct me if i'm wrong.
