I suffer from chronic depression and watches are the only thing that keep me going edition

Yep that's me. I'm loving the tag desu. Not a bracelet guy at all but it really hits the point between being super comfortable, but still feeling very durable. I think the tag is perfect size for me as well, 41mm and ~12mm thick so fits under the shirt collar easily.

Yeah man I'm not a fan of most other tags either, not even the monaco, but the aquaracer line is nice, especially the steel bezel ones imo.

That's why i suggested the minimatik, reasonable lugs.
They kind of make sense based on the original early designs where the watches had fixed lugs and were designed to use with a strap, they make less sense now, but they look okay if you get a smaller 36-38 mm watch.
Pic related is some classic versions with fixed lugs.

Which ones are you talking about? I just made 10 grand in profit on GME and want to buy myself a reasonably nice watch. No desire to impress anyone, just something I can enjoy myself. It has to be durable though, the sort of thing I can take with my while travelling or camping.

The GS for the memes, the unique look without being extravagant, and the external finishing.

I subscribe to Esquire magazine and they do “The Big Watch Book” every year. I read my first issue this year and although it doesn’t strictly teach you about watches, I did find it fascinating. I’ve always found them interesting in terms of how precise and intricate they are, but obviously they are prohibitively expensive to actually own. The cheapest one I saw and liked the look of was a Rolex, I think it was the Oyster Perpetual, or something like that (I realise it may be more specific than that).

How much are watches susceptible to “paying for the name”? For example in audio I know that Bose are absolutely not worth the money now and even though they might be good, there’s a big element of paying more because it’s Bose.

Based on looks the ones I found my most appealing were Rolex, Omega, Vacheron Constantin and Longines. I also liked some Patel, but I can forget about those.

If I allowed myself a budget of £5k and just kept putting it aside for as long as it took would that be a good amount of money? I realise that may not be enough for some of those brands, but unless I get a significant pay rise that’s about the most I could ever justify spending with my current wages.

this is a 5.5k GS

>In 1968, Seiko’s delegation sent 226 of their production Caliber 45s to both Neuchatel and the sister trials at the Geneva Observatory. These movements swept the top 7 mechanical places at Geneva (the top 3 spots were all experimental quartz movements- more on that later), while at Neuchatel 73 examples received the observatory’s highest rating in competition against experimental Swiss one-offs. Even more amazingly, those 73 Caliber 45s went on sale to the public the following year as the limited-edition Astronomical Observatory Chronometer, a step beyond Girard-Perregaux’s achievements in the previous years. After over a century of unchallenged dominance, the Swiss establishment had been soundly beaten on their own turf.
>Neuchatel’s response to the Japanese upstarts was swift and decisive. All competitive testing at Swiss observatories was to be put on indefinite hold, depriving Seiko of the chance to defend their 1968 results and leaving a 40-year gap in observatory testing. When chronometer testing was finally resumed at Neuchatel in 2007, two caveats were added to the rulebook- firstly, only mechanical movements were eligible to compete, and second all components must be manufactured in Europe. Never again would the traditional Swiss industry be humiliated by a quartz watch or a so-called outsider.

I don't know why but the only nomos that I like is one of the cheapest ones, the nomos club 36(ref 701 or 703).
That off white dial with those orange accents really give a warm tone to the watch without looking childish like in some of their watches.
The basic white dials with the minimalist look are kinda overplayed with all of these minimalist trends in the last decade.

whats the deal with unimatic?

their design, dials, case shape is really plain + straightforward and they are asking $600+++ for a nh35a
printed instead of applied indices and zero bracelet options (wut..?)

at that price range the obvious "microbrand to beat" is Zelos and the differences in detail + finishing + value are visible

$600 for a nh35 is really high
especially without bracelet
you are essentially buying just the watch head (you can disregard the aliexpress nato the unimatic comes on...)
in comparison the zelos mako comes with textured dial, applied indices, like 10? colourways with individually colour matched datewheels, solid links with fitted solid ends, top notch clasp, wrapped up in a leather watch roll inside a solid wooden box, and its just $500

these things sell out for a reason

The watch continues running when you are done setting the minute hand (technically it's running while you're doing that too, the hand is just uncoupled from the wheel that spins it). You need hacking to precisely set a watch with a second hand, because you can't spin it by hand due to how the mechanism works. No such problem with a two-hander, the seconds are arbitratry without any indicator. How precisely you can set or even read the minute hand is another question entirely.

people, and especially seiko, need to fkng stop with adding "automatic" to their dials, it's so autisticaly cringy, all a watch needs on its dial is the brandname/logo

all the technical informations belong on the case back
