Is there any sense at all in going into this hobby if you're poor?

Seems to me that before, it was possible to get into hobbies and maybe even *make* money out of them, if not at least have a relatively low cost of entry, but nowadays every hobby just requires you to funnel a shitload of money into it.

That's because marketing has convinced people that buying slightly different variations of the same item is a hobby.

For the price of a cheap watch you can buy a camera and get started with photography, buy an instrument and learn to play it, get a pair of binoculars/a cheap telescope and observe planets and distant galaxies, plus a myriad of other things.

Don't get sucked into money-sinks like watch collecting, it sure is fashionable, but the added value to your life is so small that it's not an optimal investment for a regular guy.

After all, if a person makes it to 50 or so without ever buying a super fancy watch, getting one at that point isn't a high priority unless they come upon a windfall of some sort or have had a life long desire for some specific one.

I often wanted a fancy car, but now that I'm able to buy one, it's kind of like, "meh."

Ok bros, I need some advice. Local postings on Kijiji show a listing for a Rolex Explorer 1 (pic related) that the guy says he "purchased just a few months ago from a local authorized dealer." He says he was "on a waiting list for this piece for about a year" and that he hasn't worn it at all since purchasing. Offering full box, papers, receipt.

He's asking approx. 30% above retail MSRP and says his price his firm, but the listing has been up for almost a month so I'm guessing there haven't been many takers and that he might be itching to sell.

I agree, it probably is technically my nicest watch. It's also the most expensive by a couple grand (more as I'm currently without Speedmaster), and the one that I literally never wear. I bought it because my friend happened to be selling it and I wanted to tick the dress watch box. Turns out I don't need a dress watch and I think I can spend that money on things I'd actually get use out of.

>>15907102
Good shout on "paring", I didn't know that. As for the Tudor and Laco being similar I see where you're coming from, but I can't get behind it. Those are my two favorite watches for entirely different reasons.

>>15907354
Not a Reverso, a Master Ultra Thin Small Seconds. It's honestly got nothing to do with the watch itself, I just realized I bought it to tick the dress watch box and it turns out I don't need one.

>>15907367
For the purpose of wearing them. I didn't get into this to have the nicest collection of "safe-queens".

>>15907568
Honestly I do like GS, but I'm not sure that I'd get one. As for the seething, they all hated my collection initially anyways.

>>15907737
I highly disagree on the Speedmaster, I think the new one looks much nicer, especially the bracelet since that's the biggest change. Plus being co-axial and METAS certified are both great things in my eyes. Plus I owned my last one for 2-3 years (and wore it a fair bit) and I only lost like $500 when I sold it, I'm certainly not sad about losing it.
