How about a Longines? They make a lot of cool tool watches for around the USD 2,000 mark. Brand recognition is good, the brand has a legitimate history and many very high-level collectors, their watches aren't particularly flashy, and you will feel as though you bought a good premium luxury watch.

Pic related is their "Legend Diver Watch" which I really like but is at the top end of your budget (you can probably get a discount however). Something like a HydroConquest is well within your price range.

Can someone give me the rundown on the Powermatic 80 caliber? I can't find any info on other forums that doesn't devolve into autistic shit-flinging about plastics, silicon e.t.c.

I am also looking for suggestions for a watch while im here:
> Your budget
up to 1K USD or more
> Watch type, e.g. dress, diver, pilot
Desk Diver
> Movement, e.g. automatic, hand wound, quartz
Automatic or quartz - no solar ( It's too dark where I live)
> Desired features, e.g. water resistance, day/date, 2nd time zone
Sapphire crystal, No date or good date window integration
> Preferred strap option, e.g. leather, nylon, bracelet
Bracelet
> Wrist size or desired watch size
17cm wrist - compact thickness and lug to lug appreciated

I like the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M more than the Rolex Submariner because I prefer its case design, dial finishing, date window, fully graduated bezel, hands, and I like that it has a relatively "exotic" movement compared to the Submariner. That said, I recognize that the Submariner is the more iconic of the two watches.

Likewise, I like the Rolex Daytona more than the Omega Speedmaster for almost the exact same reasons. And, similarly, the Speedmaster is arguably the more iconic of the two watches, having beat the so-called "Cosmograph" to NASA certification, several manned spacewalks, and a moon landing.

In fact, I think the watches complement each other extraordinarily well (pic related, sized to scale based on lug-to-lug measurement).

Funny, that.

Basically, the Powermatic 80's selling point is MUH 80 HOURS OF POWER but in order to get that they did some shit to lower the beatrate. Most people would rather have 4hz which would also make the watch more accurate, as opposed to having the extra 40 hours of power reserve and a lower rate + you don't know how the long term performance will be seeing as the movement has been monkeyed with to run slower, rather than running as originally intended. It may also use some more plastic parts that are also newer. They may wear faster and may be harder to source but that's hearsay

It's based on the ETA2824 and exists in 3 classes, as the ETAC07.XXX
Lowest class has a polymer escapement, middle class has a jeweled escapement, and highest class which is COSC for Mido and Powermatic 80 Silicium for Tissot has a amagnetic, silicon spring.

It has a lower beat rate than the ETA 2824 to help increase the power reserve, and it has a free sprung balance wheel, making it more precise, but harder to regulate, but it comes quite well regulated out of the factory.

It's a very good movement but I would always prefer the 2824 since it's not as controlled by the Swatch Group and you find more watchmakers willing to work with it.

It has a rep for being a plastic movement because it get's confused with the swissmatic sometimes.

I don't like the style of bezel that has numerals on it and falls off to the side. Daytona and Explorer II have this and many others too. The numbers make it part of the dial for me and it looks off to me when the "outer dial" doesn't seem to want to be read by me.
I like the Speedmaster because it's much more simple and subtle in it's styling (and has a proper bezel). In terms of quality there's no question that the Daytona is superior. Oh and in my experience screw down pushers are really annoying when you quickly want to time something.
I generally like Seamasters, I just don't like the "wart" that they use for a helium excape valve and the case shape + bezel are simply more elegant on a Submariner. Still think both are good though.

You aren't going to get a high end watch to flex with that would be recognized by average people for under a grand, but if you're lucky you could find a vintage one that would be respected by watch enthusiasts.
Then again, if your intention is to flex then you shouldn't have been aiming that low to begin with.
A Tissot is a good starter watch for everyday use and looks nice enough for formal wear. Most people won't even notice your watch anyway.
You can always save up your money and buy a high end watch if you think a entry level swiss isn't good enough.

Do you mean the downward angle of the bezel? The way I see it, a tachymetric scale is not meant for ultra precise measurement so this doesn't truly affect the watch's usability. On a dive watch, it would (since, theoretically, you use the bezel to ensure you're under for a safe amount of time), so by your reasoning the Submariner's bezel must be inferior to the Seamaster's because it is set at a more extreme "falling" angle. Screw down pushers don't really bother me because they do contribute to the Rolex's better water resistance (I know others have achieved this without screw-downs but the Speedmaster has not). The He escape valve is one of my favourite components of the Seamaster, and I just love the compound curvature of its case shape and lugs, so agreed to disagree on those points.

Bambinos have fucked proportions. They are 41mm which some people (copers) say is pushing it for a dress watch. In reality it's probably grotesquely big unless you are a big guy 4 u with a 7.5 inch wrist. They also have an annoying 19mm lug width which makes strap changes irritating.
Orient makes another model I cannot remember that is better sized. I think it's called the Maestro and it's 40mm which, yes, is noticeably better.
You could also just take the solar quartz pill and get a Citizen Stiletto. Absolutely perfect for the office worker.

Miyota 82s0 - I'd prefer a 9xxx series movement if I was spending >€200
Stainless Steel - it would have to be really cheap to be anything else
Engraved back - simply meh
Sapphire crystal - actually pretty good
5ATM water resistence - meh
Looks like this - it looks bad anon and will look worse IRL

239 european pesos - you can probably find something better

but if you love it buy it, if you don't love it then don't ( and I mean really love it) don't buy watches you "like". If you think it's going to haunt your mind then pull the trigger

There is nothing wrong with buying shitters if you truly love them but the price being low makes them dangerous because people buy them just because they are cheap and set the bar for purchase so much lower.

Life is too short to wear watches you don't love regardless of price.

Honestly at your price there are a lot of good options. Open dial or open heart watches at the low end come across a bit gimmicky. They are cool if you're new to watches but you will get over it fast and probably regret it.

If you want to add something extra to the dial maybe look at a sun/moon indicator, sone seagulls have legit moonphase for relatively cheap.

Don't want to be too harsh on you, i just think you'd out grow the design and regret it.

Help me /wt/

I've been promoted at work and it feels like the appropriate time to buy a decent watch.

Budget: £3000

I'm torn between a Tudor Black Bay or an AnOrdain model 1. I'm conscious that one is about double the price of the other but it's still a significant amount to pay. My head is saying the Tudor: I don't have a diver, it's rugged and a complete package whereas the AnOrdain is just there for the dial.

But damn. It's a British/Scottish made brand, it's gorgeous, and I could buy myself a diver with the excess or just save the money.

tldr: Tudor Black Bay or AnOrdain Model 1

Those are two very different choices.
Tudor is being hyped, but the BB58 is a very clean watch, timeless, well built, good color choices. It's the kind of watch you could wear as your one watch forever and it will go with you anywhere and handle anything. It's got a clean, no bullshit, masculine design.
AnOrdain on the other hand is a company for watch guys. Their watches are refined, modernist, and playful. They're nice watches. But these watches project a completely different mood.
