Here's your day date bro

This thread is about the appreciation of watches and their design, their history, and the engineering and materials that are required to make a functioning timepiece. And diversity.

Hello all, this is the anon who promised to visit the Grand Seiko boutique. I did so and took a few pictures.

First of all: the place is easy to miss. It's right next to a Rolex boutique, but unlike the large Rolex shop which is on the corner of Fifth Avenue and East 53rd, the GS shop is small and underneath a large sidewalk canopy (pic related).

The interior is sparse, but elegant. There are window-display cases immediately to the left and right of you as you enter the shop. There are further displays on the walls, along with a glasstop table display that features many of their bestsellers from the Heritage, Elegance, and Sports collections. Pic related.

I was let in by the boutique director, a really cool guy by the name of Weston. He asked me what he could help me with and I told him I'm in the market for a Grand Seiko, which prompted the only other customer in the boutique to laugh and say, "You're in the right place." It was a pretty cool initial feeling - you could tell the place wasn't well-trafficked every day all day like the shop over, but the layout and atmosphere made it clear that this was the spot to be in.

Having extensively perused GS models before going in with the intent to buy, I knew what I wanted to see first in-person and asked for him to bring out the Golden Snowflake (SBGA259) and the 2020 Four Seasons collection.

This is my first lifetime watch and I need it to be an everyday piece that goes with most/all suits, so Weston helped me rule out the Summer and Autumn models. We were left with the Winter, Spring, and Golden Snowflake.

File: 3.01 MB, 4032x1908, 3.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
15892126

I decided the Winter did not compare to the iridescence of the Spring, nor to the classic elegance and tasteful bi-tonal contrast of the Golden Snowflake. However, Weston did point out other cool watches, including boutique exclusives which cannot be found through online retailers or other authorized retailers.

Pic related: top watch (forgot the name) is a boutique exclusive which is extremely hard to come by and is easily upsold.

>> No.15892133

15892138

Ultimately, the decision came down to the SBGA413 (Vernal/Spring Equinox) and the Golden Snowflake. Whereas the Golden Snowflake had the perfect look of a "classic watch," pulling off a beautiful gold color layered on top of a textured snow-white dial, the iridescence and rippled texture of the dial of the Spring model was simply beautiful to behold.

Furthermore, the Spring has a more elegant finish to the lugs, is a purely sapphire top with no bezel, and "looks" like a 39mm watchface.

15892154

Ultimately, Weston advised me soundly: the Spring is a super hot seller and could be gone at any moment; the only one he had left at the shop was the one he presented to me, taken out of its box for the first time (he unsealed it in front of me). They didn't even put it in the window display because they didn't want a bunch of window shoppers crowding around and inside the store just to see the watch without intent of purchase.

On the other hand, the Golden Snowflake is a classic and will be around for many years. Even though it may be a more spare and classic design - and thereby a safer choice - the innovation of the Spring aesthetic did not mean it was any less elegant.

I went with the Spring and I'm very happy with my choice. It's a great fit and it never gets old to pull up that brilliant dial from underneath my sleeve. Also, the light pink easily transforms into a beautiful smoky silver depending on how it catches the light.

Thank you to all the anons on this general that have educated me on the value and dignity of the Grand Seiko. I am delighted with my lifelong timepiece companion.

Not sure about the used market. This was not an AD, but an official Seiko boutique. I paid about $6.8k USD including tax. For what it's worth, they are already being upsold on secondary markets for $7.5k+.

Also, you may be pleased to know that GS is strongly considering new "Four Seasons" releases due to how popular the line is. So you may want to wait and see how the new releases look before committing. They may even be international.

Also, I was told GS is in the process of implementing a policy that allows you to swap straps for any watch at the official boutiques (it seems the choices will only be titanium and crocodile leather).

Looking to buy my big boy watch and the search for the perfect 37-38mm chronograph continues. With the Zenith being certified unobtainium and Baltic charging 600 for a seagull the other contenders stand more of a chance. Girard Perregaux crept up but only on grey market. Baume and Breitling are sitting on shop windows and the Tissot almost shot itself in the foot with that fugly date window and an absurd 3k pricetag on the grey market. The tide is turning to the 2k Girard Perregaux.

Guns are dangerous. Why play with guns when paintball is almost the same?

>The Seiko SPB153 is a delight to wear, because I get the thrill of a vintage ref. 6105 every time I look at my wrist, while knowing it can take a real beating. Recently I went paintballing with it on, thinking it would be mostly covered under the sleeve of my jumpsuit. To by initial horror, when I looked at it between games I saw an emerging welt on the back of my hand and the entire watch covered in purple paint thanks to two closely grouped shots. My heart sank, kicking myself that I should have left it in my bag, and resigning myself to the sheepish conversation I would have to have with the Service Centre about why there was paint in my watch.

>I needn’t have worried. As I ran it under some water and wiped it with a towel, I saw that it was completely fine, ticking away unperturbed. To paraphrase a friend; “a well-built watch should be able to survive anything your arm can survive,” which is more true than you’re likely to realise until you run your watch through its paces.

37-38mm, excellent taste anon, >>15892826 classic /wt/.

Okay, if you are buying Zenith I do think you should go with the classic design (coloured tri dial in 38mm), fake lume is okay on a £300 watch but not at Zenith money.

I out right don't like the Tissot, due to the date, messy dial, hand will be hard to read in person, gold on black always is and square pushers are not as elegant and pump.

B&M has design elements of the Tissot I don't like, square pushes and messy dial.

I sold the Baltic as many know, due to downsizing and honestly sometimes that large bezel would rub me the wrong way, I think it's because they use the same case on the diver and isn't were the timing bezel goes and that triggers me to no end.

Go with the GP or Breitling. The dial of the Breitling is a little left sided heavy, knowing GO the finishing is probably better, I would go with the GP myself and for 2k you can't go wrong, in 20 year it will still look great and age better than the Breitling. Easier to dress up the GP as well.

I used to think only a twat would wear gold but then I realised that was because I was told to think that way by society in general. That was a push back against the over the top consumption of the 1980's and 90's where every wall street twat and yuppie had a gold rolex. Today it is now frowned upon by most people to you flex your wealth.

When it comes to watches specifically because of the steel sports watch craze and their mental prices people have been looking again into precious metal watches because they now do not differ that much in price. The pink is an extremely soft hue - it is generally a greyish pink when you do see it. A vast majority of the time, the dial fluctuates between a brilliant off-white and a smoky & shiny silver. I don't anticipate that the dial will ever flash hot pink unless the lighting directly influences it (e.g., pink LEDs).

you mean handwind. Automatics are also mechanical watches. And orient has way more than just the bambinos. Did you forget tristars

luch, vintage soviets, cheap chinese handwinds, timex marlin, seagulls

I buy my watches regardless of /wt/ i post here to talk about that's (which I always do) I posted hked before but my collection has changed, you come here to shitpost, that's fine you enjoy your Casios, I've had them and wore a gshock for years.

My collection is not even that expensive, anyone an okay job could save up and buy my watches. I have 2% of my net worth in watches so to you it seems like a lot but maybe you should have a look at yourself before questions my spending habits.
