Vintage watches need servicing to do their job. If you want to use it, it needs to be serviced. If you just "invest" then I don't know. You may wanna avoid sending it to the manufacturer if you want to keep it as original as possible.

Polishing depends on the case. If it has crisp lines, even a little polishing can turn it into a shiny but ugly blob. Some case shapes will not suffer so easily.
