Why? Watchmaking is something that involves dealing with dozens, if not hundreds, of extremely small moving parts working in concert with each other at sub-millimeter tolerances. You need genuine passion for this shit. Passion and skill should be absolute, not fucking diversity. How is that going to make it better? Recieved this watch as a subscription gift with a pop-science magazine when I was 13 years old and treasured it more than anything.

The watch got lost while moving when I was 15 or something and recently found the exact same modell on Ebay. Paid 3 bucks for the watch and a new battery.

What do you guys think? I just love the design and wish that there is an automatic watch with the same design.

>> No.15882834

I inherited an automatic watch from my late grandfather which he wore almost every day for approx. 50 years. In the last few years of his life he wore the watch less often. Ultimately, the watch probably sat unworn for 3 years before I took possession of it.

To my knowledge the watch has never been serviced, or if it was, it was last serviced many years ago.

When I began wearing the watch, I would rotate it regularly with other watches, wearing it 2-3 times per week. It would consistently lose the exact same amount of time every day - I would set it at 7:30 am and it would lose 5 minutes by 5:00 pm. I chalked this up to it being old and needing to be examined by a watchmaker, but I didn't take it in because I wasn't in a hurry to do so.

I have been wearing the watch more consistently for some time now and I have noticed that instead of losing 5 minutes every ~10.5 hours (equaling approx. 12 minutes per 24 hours), it loses about 2 minutes every ~12 hours (equalling approx. 4 minutes per 24 hours). So the watch is keeping much better time than it was previously.

I will eventually take the watch in to be examined by a watchmaker (right now, it's difficult with COVID measures) but does it make logical sense that wearing the watch more is causing it to keep better time?

Does anyone have experience with tools from Ali? https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000957445444.html these seem pretty well reviewed. I'm a novice but want to learn to do everything but screwing around with the movement itself. Anything additional to know?

These tools are generally not much better than scrap metal. There's a little plastic brick you can get with diagonal lines on it for bracelet adjustment, the nylon hammer is alright, and the watch lug tools work. But stuff like 12 there, and the dogshit replacement spring bars? They're not even worth buying.

I picked up a press with a bunch of different plastic die sizes that works well for putting the backs on cheap watches, although I haven't used it for removing a crystal yet.

For hand replacement, you want something decent, they're delicate. Not those shitty little grippers, you want the fancy pry bars.

you can’t lose with either. Ultimately I think the leather looks better, more classic and the bracelet distracts from the beautiful case shape a tad. So I guess if you want both get the bracelet, if not go leather.

Sapphire has no place on a G-Shock. It's far too prone to shattering to have the shock resistance G-Shocks are known for. I believe there are a few models that have sapphire but it's not a good idea.
