So Young Chinese are starting to dress in "traditional" Chinese clothing, particularly Han.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cip9DA1UvHk

While I think it's pretty autistic to dress up in full old style Han clothing instead of incorporating Han patterns, designs and features into contemporary utalitarian fashion, I can at least give props to Young Chinese resisting "Just wear western suits bro".
Why hasn't there been any real attempt to do this in the west as well though with people who are sick of stereotypical suits? I mean you have that one British dandy guy (though dandyism is pretty much the foundation of modern male fashion and suits), but I've never, ever seen anyone walk around in more "traditional western clothing" outside of Eastern Europe during Mayday.

Because americans are actually brainless sheeple who can't think outside their culture controlled parameters. For all their brags about individualism they actually conform to a limited set of expressions and hate everything else.

China has literally thousands of years of tradition and culture to draw on.
Americans have no tradition and their culture... well.

Because most European traditional clothing was either incredibly expensive and intricate and worn exclusively by nobles or the wealthy, or they were used exclusively for important holidays, religious occasions and weddings, and in these cases, it was also particularly expensive (often, a good portion of a family's whole wealth was spent on jewelry and a good dress for the daughter). Other than that, other "traditional" clothing was workwear.

But anyway, mostly because you'd get clowned for doing it. Still, I'd love to be able to go around dressed like Lee Van Cleef.

Part of it is the synthetic fibers, another part is how form-fitting and standardized modern clothes are. This is why 99% pics on /fa/ have "wings" on their t-shirts.

Another part is that these styles are designed to be made by hand, and are designed to have a degree of internal modularity. A skirt can be hiked up and pinned in place depending on the context. The time, effort, and supplies necessary to make a skirt of five occasions goes into make one that can instead by quickly altered to fit five occasions. The Kosovorotka, an Eastern European men's peasant shirt (the "White Dashiki") is similar, having sleeves that can be quickly altered in tightness and placement depending on the occasion, and was (and still is) worn with a belt whose height can be used to adjust the firmness of the article depending on the need.

Contrast this with machine-made clothing, which is more form fitting, but at the same time not modular. It's also not designed to breathe at all, whereas pre-modern clothing was created with an internal temperature regulation system in mind.

If this thread is still up I'll post the Byzantine Thin Toga, which if it continued to today I'd imagine would be a long string you'd wrap around yourself.

Do it. Her outfit is the same as the male version

Buy the same thing and tailor it.

I have a yukata kimono
It’s essentially the same thing
Typically made for men.

Yes wear what she’s wearing

Life is what you make it
You are god

Express your soul and it will envelop the earth

I’d buy her outfit, adjust it, and wear it in public.
And I’m a white Canadian guy.

I've eyed yukata before. I think short women's kimono are close to my ideal fit.
This is a westernized one by an American surf brand and it seems ridiculous to use an example... but ignore everything else about the image (model, colour, pattern, etc) and imagine a piece with that cut over a button-up shirt and wool trousers, instead of a blazer/knitwear.
There are some beautiful vintage ones in TO thriftstores that go for ~$100, will try some on after lockdown.

Good for them. They should be proud of who and what they are and their traditions.

A suit is trad European clothing though, it's the more modern shift from the older styles, the natural progression of clothing. That's why it would be odd for someone to wear something from 1750.

But some countries did not have that natural progression, they had older style clothing and then just switched to European so to go back to their roots, they have to take a greater leap back in time to do that.

If we did this in the west what would be the best period clothing to revive? For me it would have to be late 1700s/early 1800s.
