>You get some super basic bitch shit that people would nitpick to hell if it was on any other watch

Ok, let's try an exercise to find a watch that's superior to Rolex in these categories:

a) it has to have the same level of finish or better (since Rolex is apparently so basic)
b) it has to be a lot cheaper than Rolex (since Rolex is apparently so overpriced)
c) it has to have decent and universal design (not mall-like, tool design is fine, preferably between sporty and dress, not ultra-dress like Patek, not ultra-sporty like watches for black people)
d) it has to have a certain *something* that Rolex doesn't have (for example a display case back, or a rare complication, so that when your friend has a Rolex, you can show off your watch and say "but does your Rolex have this?")

Please list anything that fits the criteria and we can analyze it.

This is exactly the appeal of mechanical. You are doing more with primitive and inefficient technology and dealing with the side effects (winding, re-setting, losing time) is more fun.

Thanks for the feedback. The Dufrane uses an SW200 which is a pretty good Swiss movement, and the watch is fully assembled in the US. Can you buy this and confidently say it's at the very least not Chinese?

Weiss and RGM seem to be the only manufacturers to make their own movements in the US, and I'd like to buy US but these are out of my price range

>> No.15851439

They're all fucking Chinese, bro. The Swiss brands get their parts manufactured in China and they just assemble them in Switzerland. When you see SWISS MADE it actually means something like "59% Swiss Made" with different definitions of what constitutes "made" like assembly, materials, research...
If it was actually assembled in America and has good QC on each watch it's pretty good. You're getting a rock solid movement that beats at 4hz as everyone, including the Swiss, are backing off to 3hz to get more power reserve. It's got a unique but still pretty classic look. I think you can wear it and feel good about it. I don't like the date window but its placement is inoffensive and while the lume means it might not be a "true" dress watch, it and the date make sense as a daily wear. 39mm is good too, not too large but not too small even though 38 would have been better but what's 1mm really

So I like knives along with watches and it's an open secret that when a company produces anything in China, they have to send the blueprints, which are then copied and bootlegged by the Chinese. But the Chinese don't stop there. Sometimes these factories will run 12 hours a day making knives for a "USA" company like, say, Benchmade, where they get shipped to the US, assembled there, and sold for hundreds of dollars, and then after midnight another crew comes in, they turn the machines back on, turn on a couple different machines that just stamp a different logo, and then sell it for a fraction of the price.
The same thing is happening in the watch world. All these brands, from Steinhart to Rolex, are making cases in China because the Chinese just need the same machine and the schematics and they will make the shit for pennies on the dollar. Then the Chinese make their own version. All this proves is that Swiss shit is a ripoff and as you go down that line to the Chinese offbrand you are just getting ripped off slightly less. But you accept getting ripped off because you're a watchcuck. You just need to determine what your threshold is.

There is your answer. They have a few designs that are made in the same 904l steel that Rolex shills nowadays. There are some universal designs that fit between dress and tool. I think it is common knowledge that products that dont make the QC (if there is any), go from the same manufacturing plant into the warehouses of the knockoff company and being sold there for a fraction of the price. Quality being hit or miss, you might catch a good piece for a bargain, you might get a lemon and end up paying shipping to chyna back and forth.

Same way as for example Jim Beam owns smaller companies and sells lesser batches, or same ones, you wont know, to noname underdog offbrand bottlers and just slice a larger piece of the market, while being able to rid themselves of the lesser good shit for a profit, or at least not for a loss.

Depends.

The original is a Heuer Carrera, actual Heuer, these seem to be the most valued and smallest in size (2447).
After the TAG buyout, they did some edition in the 90s I think (3110) still good value for the money, then another in the 2000s, at which point they strayed so far from the original in their Carrera lineup, Casio started to make copies of them; then they came out with some aniversary meme, which still holds true to the original design language, but costs like 6k.
All in all, prepare at least 3-4k and take a deep nosedive into the variants, versions and references regarding dial finishes, etc.

To add, I remember Stowa has been caught as some offbrand chinkshit watch had Stowa stampings on their cases, the Stowa CEO admitting a big fucking nothing. People will bend the law as much as their can and push the profit margins as much as their marketing will allow them to.
This isnt exclusive to watches, or knives as you put, but any goods, doesnt even have to be luxury, only there the profit margins are exponentional.
I have worked in a milk processing plant, we used the same milk in cartons of a store-brand marque for say €.85, then the same milk in a highly reputable brand in a different print (same carton) for €2.
You need to be weary, and as written know your threshold. And at any rate, can you blame the companies? Would you not do the same, should you be in their positions, have a name to ride on, being able to produce whatever and people still paying you for it while giving you a 80%+ profit margin? Take any brand you like, ANY, Longines, Tissot, TAG, Omega, ze Germans. What is more disgusting, IWC or Panerai overcharging tenfolds for random ass china shit, or a microbrand charging 500 for a 100 worth of watch?

Speaking of oversized Grand Seiko models
This this is 46mm!
And almost 15mm thick!
I guess the just wanted to be able to reuse the ceramic pieces that fit their chrono instead of having to make a new ceramic production line for smaller pieces. But holy fuck who is the target market for this? Do asians really like watches that are thicker than their wrist?

YES
LIKE YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE
Chinese especially. I am on very good terms with this old Chinese watchmaker who is able to service, and has serviced, some amazing timepieces. And his shop is half retarded Invicta shitters of unimaginable size and tastelessness. I asked him about it and he said that the average Chinese guy walks in and wants that stuff because it's big and loud and impressive. If they could they would get watches with solid gold tiger penises and jade dragons and shit on it because they love that garish style.
You go to Japan and Korea and all these kids with 6 inch tranny wrists are wearing giant mallshitter chronos with two tone bracelets and random red accents. Grand Seiko is like right on the edge, as close as you can get to marketing towards that sensibility without going full retard

Does anybody know of any watches similar to pic related, but as a quartz? I love the busy dials of older chronographs. I've already looked into Dan Henry, the Military Chronograph for example, but its 14 mm thick, which is way too thick for me. Any other brands that replicate that kind of vintage style?

Even if all of those Omegas or Grand Seikos can compete on price and specs, they all crash to the ground once you measure their thickness compared to Rolex. It’s inexcusable for the ATs ans Seamasters to be so big. Grand Seiko is just a complete joke, even their 9F watches are slabs.

That alone warrants the price difference for Rolex.

Stop trying to appeal to people on the internet and get any watch you want. If you want a Rolex, get a Rolex. They obviously make damn good watches. But, Rolex or not, any fine Swiss watch will serve you well, will be a solid piece that will last you a lifetime and you can pass on to your grandchildren, and will bring you joy every time you look at your wrist to check the time—so long as you follow your heart and get the right one that speaks to you.

But, if you're interested in my response to your exercise, I personally I think the Seamaster Professional Diver 300M (one reference previous to the current design) is the perfect watch and checks all the boxes.

>It's finished as well or better than a Rolex (certainly better for the price considering its closest Rolex competitor is the basic Oyster Perpetual) with a more complex and difficult to craft case that combines satin and highly polished elements flawlessly.
>MSRP is already a lot cheaper than Rolex but you can get them at a heavy discount and they're actually available at ADs.
>IMO it has a fantastic design for a tool watch with perfectly proportioned appliqué indices, logo, and marquee, a fully graduated dive bezel, gorgeous skeletonized hands, perfectly twisting lugs (superior even amongst other Omega watches), and a beautiful glossy dial that literally looks like it extends downwards into infinity (trust me pictures do not do the dial justice. The colour is perfect and appears to be several different shades at once. I will sometimes just stare at mine for a minute or two at a time admiring it. Pic related is the closest I have seen to what it looks like IRL but even it doesn't tell you the whole story)
>beautiful caseback, coaxial escapement, helium escape valve (some people dislike it but it is a conversation piece precisely for that reason), the Seamaster was standard issue for the British Special Boat Service, James Bond connection if you're into that thing.

I've become a 2-dial chrono guy lately. A more symmetrical look but also easier to read with both hours and minutes on the same subdial. I think Rolex are just trying to move the core steel sports lines into a different market segment. Not quite AP levels, but in that general direction. It’s true that for many years, when a man did well for himself, he’d buy a Sub, so they’re absolutely everywhere. I think Rolex want that man to now wear a Tudor, and for the Sub to be perceived differently. I agree that as someone who has been collecting watches for a couple of decades now, it’s so weird to see people going crazy over a Sub. ‘Finally got the call!!’, ‘Grail achieved!!’ etc....I’m not going to pretend that I’m immune to trends, but it’s weird that everyone suddenly desperately needs a submariner now that they’re difficult to get.
