ITT: Anons post fashions that aren't socially acceptable to wear and other anons tell them how they can still rock the aesthetic in a socially acceptable way.
For example: I'm really into Golden Age Dutch Merchant core, how can I still wear the essence of this aesthetic without going full autismo mode and just dressing like I'm in a fucking Rembrandt painting?

Traditional dress from my home country. Not very common (unless old) back home and obviously not at all seen in the UK where I live.

And OP, that style of hat isn't too uncommon, maybe you could just wear that if you feel like it.. speaking of which, I wonder what shoes the (rich) Dutch Merchants wore, will have to research it

Ironically this is the 16th c. Jesuit missionary - priest, Nicolas Trigault / Trigaultius, scholar chronicler translator (of Matteo Ricci's "China Journal") wearing classical Chinese hanfu as a form of inculturated clerical dress. The setting of Rubens' painting is a chapel with the altar visible behind. The Jesuit missionaries to China received authorization from Pope Paul V to develop vernacular inculturated Mandarin Rites for China, with controversial Confucian elements. This caused much conflict with other Catholic missionary orders, (i.e., Dominicans & Franciscans) and these "Confucian Rites" were later suppressed by the Holy See.

>>15833393
It's not a turban, it's a chaperon. It has no relation to the turban.

The turban develops out of two styles. The first comes from the Middle East, developing ultimately from the Sumerians. In short, if you live in a hot sandy place, you want to drape breathable fabrics over yourself. But they get in the way, so you bunch them up on your head. Something similar develops in India, independently (or rather, if it isn't independent it's so fucking far back that it might as well be).

The chaperon is an independent European invention. Peasants would wear a thick cloak with a hood. The form could vary, sometimes it was basically a hoody, sometimes it was a tanktop with a hood, it doesn't really matter, point is it has a hood. To save time, a long "tail" would develop on the hat. When they wanted to cool down, the wearer would take the cloak off, but put the hood on the head, so it would "hang" off of the head. Eventually, the garment would be wrapped around the head to keep it from dangling, using a sleeve (if it had one) or the long tail to act as a fastener.

15835857

>>15835854
It eventually became fashionable to do this, rather than to wear the garment as a cloak. The tail was then extended to allow for it to be a hat, while the rest of the cloak shrunk.

At some point, they started padding the chaperon.

>>15835857
The man in that pic has a "donut", which was common. The chaperon would wrap around, and contain, a donut of some soft, light material. This was very fancy. Less fancy men wore something like pic related, which didn't have the donut, but was lighter. Also, you could actually wear this for warmth, unlike the donut varieties (the man in the video in >>15835836 demonstrates this).

The chaperon would eventually decline in fashionability. However, it would retain a presence in academic, formal dress.

Pic related, the thing on the left with the lion (the black sash) is an epitoge. It's a hyper-evolved form of the chaperon, which was traditionally draped over the shoulder in the presence of nobility and the clergy. I'll post another one, these take a variety of forms. Some can actually be used as a hood, or are a hood that has a drape. These only show up in traditional lawyer's garb, or as academic dress.

Fair point, although I meant more so that it looks like (and essentially is) a pile of cloth wounded around your head which a sou'wester hat clearly is not (not even superficially like the chaperone does). On a side note, the painting I originally posted by Jan Van Eyck is sometimes called "Portrait of a Man in a Red Turban" despite him not actually wearing a turban; it just goes to show how superficially similar they are. It is fundamentally different though, I will admit this, and I was incorrect when I called it a turban.
