I would like to give away all of the niche samples I have to people (U.S. and maybe Canada/Mexico) who participate in these threads since their resale value is so low. I have a whole lot of them, multiple shoeboxes. I'm thinking of making a Pastebin list of all of them and letting people choose a certain amount. They can then PayPal me a small amount of money just to cover shipping and I'll send them on. Does this sound like a good idea or is it going to be more work than it sounds? Pic is just a small portion of what I have.

You got me. I filled 200 different vials/decants with piss. I even made a color-coded list. For clear, mostly synthetic perfumes I drank a lot of water and then pissed. For perfumes with a moderate amount of naturals I was sparing with the amount of water I drank that day before pissing. For very natural and dark perfumes like Hiram Green's Hyde and Slumberhouse Jeke I dehydrated myself almost to the point of hospitilization. That was a rough time.

I have some samples coming in a few days that hopefully will help me decide whether or not I want to finally grab bottles of Yatagan and Hinoki. If I don't fall in love with any of these samples, I will probably go through with it. I'm trying to be more careful with full-bottle purchases though, I have 20 or so that I use on a semi-regular basis after paring down my collection. I would like to avoid redundancy in my collection as much as I can after being a little too trigger-happy early on.
And then of course, I keep going back and forth on if I should get a 30ml of NYI or not...

That isn't too say that "safe" frags are bad, just that you may need to acclimatize them to these scents. Its like introducing a friend who only eats cheeseburgers to more exotic cuisine. They won't like it at first just cause its unfamiliar, but once they try it, they'll start to like it.

I really like oud satin mood but I don't know what I would ever do with a full bottle. I think that it is absolutely only a one spray perfume because of how monstrously strong it is. I don't like decants because they go bad quickly and leak and just don't spray well in general. If I buy a full bottle that's about 1000 wearings. Even if I went with two sprays it would still be 500.

One spray would project 24 hours later after a shower. It was the glossy cap version but it was so strong it had to be the pre-reformulation perfume, because people talk about the new version being weak.

I regret my decision, it smelled so good, but it really was obnoxious to keep smelling that perfume. For hours after spraying it I'd love it, but the next day I would just be thinking to myself "THIS FUCKING PERFUME HAS OVERSTAYED ITS WELCOME". I agree that they can be ripoffs but there's really no substitute for wearing a fragrance and seeing how it develops on your own skin at your own pace through your own day or your own night. There's only so far department stores will get you and using scent notes from other frags you own really doesn't work that well since a great fragrance is really nuanced and often has a different take on a common ingredient.

Maybe I just feel this way because I like the more off beat and rare perfumes that are super unique and can't generally be found at Macys.

I agree that is why you literally have to pay attention and hide. if you get spotted and they latch onto you like a parasite then you cut your losses, check something out in the mall and then circle back to try again. The best setup is when there is a bookcase in the front of the store and you can get in some good huffs before the vicious cunt bitch hole comes over to you and just stand there next to you and and watch you uncomfortably til you leave. It's bit of a stealth / speed game and much more effective then clicking on pages of worthless bundles no one wants on these sample sites, and these overcharged dogshit selections that get to a point where you might as well just blind buy a bottle instead

>>15837638
I'm not saying I like it this way, we live in a flawed dark world filled with black people. But there comes to a point where the sample sites are so overpriced and just bad in every way that we have to just stop pretending here. Store associates are literally employed to assist you in finding the thing you want. I know they're paid on commission so they always want to make a sale but you don't have to try and be all sneaky or feel guilty about hunting for a fragrance you would actually wear. Ask them for recommendations based on the notes you want and act interested. It's a win win since if you end up discovering something you like you will buy it and they're also happy. Sounds more like a creepy fetish when you just go around trying to sneak sniffs of random shit until you get 'caught'.

>>15837653
Sure but what are you and the other few posters on a frag general thread on an Afghani rug weaving forum gonna change by boycotting the sample sites. Better option might be to try and start a sample trading group composed of people in these threads. Everyone here seems to jerk off to a lot of the same profiles and scents so you'd probably all benefit from a setup like that.

>>15837653
I'm sure some sellers would do this if you asked. I've only ever inquired about combined shipping. I don't really have particular sellers I use. I find a fragrance that sounds interesting to me and see if anyone is selling samples on eBay. Then if I'm feeling money conscious I will do the math and figure out the markup to decide whether I want to buy it. Often times if I'm buying a sample from one seller I'll take a look at their other offerings to see if there's anything else I want. I guess that's a way to find favorite sellers is just to look for people with similar tastes.

You gotta understand, there is literally nothing they can help you with in macys. Maybe your equivalents are different or something but the way it is in macys is that they have it self serve. Bottles will be sitting in the open, some at counters and then for some of them they will also have a a couple shelves of bottles. They leave the bottles there along with testing strips next to them. Now we are not dealing with thousands of bottles here, it's a pretty agreeable amount to try all of them in not a long amount of time by any means.

But if you are spotted, if these nightmare demons catch you with even so much as a whiff of them then they will stand there right next to you in silence just staring at you til you need to the store, or maybe they say stuff but my point is that there is no deactivate fuck off button with them. It's not a "ok let me know if you need anything". No they watch you try every scent, counters you can go down and get lucky SOMETIMES with no one being there. That is how I tried fahrenheit. But generally the better shot is to grift the shelves quickly that are positioned in the front of the store, it will take time before anyone sees you with their heat vision

I just think the sample people are a minority, you see the same shit circle jerked because what else are people gonna go in on here? Some of this shit you can't even sample if you want to, or it costs 1/4th and then you have this little vial thats like "when should I use this.... I own this amount of it now"

>>15837671
How much do you generally spend in 1 go of sampling shit? I know this varies but I am trying to wrap my head around what would be an optimal amount of money for ___ amount of scents. And then you get into the struggle of "should I get a sample of this niche cologne? should I just blind buy a clone? what is even the value of these that I should be paying for in relation to enjoyment?" samples would help if there was a good system but there isn't.

I'm not sure I understand. I don't really see how anyone is limited in what fragrances they might go for outside of price. Pretty much everything is available on the internet these days.

>Some of this shit you can't even sample if you want to, or it costs 1/4th and then you have this little vial thats like "when should I use this.... I own this amount of it now"
I don't think I've encountered a fragrance that I can't track down a sample of somewhere, except for discontinued shit. I've got a couple samples of store only offerings so even that is attainable.

contd.

The price of samples is definitely a concern. It certainly sucks to pay a lot for a small sample but most samples are priced in proportion to the cost of the entire bottle so you're not getting any more gouged than usual with a pricey sample . If the sample is too pricey for you the bottle probably is too. You have two choices at that point. You can buy the sample anyway. View it as a way to try out something you could never justify buying a full bottle of or to satisfy a curiosity about whether a frag is worth the price. You can also say fuck this and walk away. I guess the third option is to blind buy but I don't think I would ever blind buy a fragrance unless I'm intimately familiar with the house and even then I probably wouldn't.

Smell is maybe the most personal of the five senses. Every person smells things a bit differently. Taste is the only sense that comes close to being so personalized and that's because it's closely tied to smell. Add in the fact that the same scent will smell different on every person depending on their body chemistry, body heat, where they live, what they're doing during the day, even their heart rate. On top of all that the same ingredient can be used to completely different effect by different perfumers. I've read so many reviews where someone says something like, "Man, I really love ambers so I was excited to try this fragrance but I don't like it at all."

>How much do you generally spend in 1 go of sampling shit?
I really don't plan it out. Sometimes I fall down a rabbit hole and end up with a long list of samples I want to try but then I'll look at the total price and rein myself in. Last purchase was maybe seventy bucks of samples.

contd. again (wow this got long, sorry)

>what is even the value of these that I should be paying for in relation to enjoyment?
That is the real question to ask and only you can answer it. I'm probably a very atypical fragrance consumer. I rarely wear fragrances out of the house and if I do it's usually one of the same few every time.

I find masterfully executed fragrances to be an otherworldly experience and will more often buy samples purely for my own enjoyment and to experience all the cool shit that's out there. I'm a fancy cocktail bartender by trade and fragrances scratch the same itch for me that all the weird liquors do. I find it fascinating how humans have managed to capture such a wide variety of tastes and smells and even memories in something like a perfume or a spirit and I want to know them all.
Samples satisfy that need in a way that I never could/would by buying full bottles. I only buy bottles of stuff I'd wear out.

I’ve often equated perfume and, to a greater extent, sampling to like trying whisky. What does whisky do for you? It tastes nice, but after a little while it’s gone and you quite literally piss it away. If I’m drinking it at home I can take the time to savour it and try and appreciate the complexity. I can savour it. If I just buy miniatures I can taste lots of if I really like one I can buy a whole bottle. It probably costs a similar amount to a bottle of perfume too. Granted, you get far more liquid, but you might only get to experience it once or twice in an evening. Now consider going out, if I’m out with friends I’m going to be drinking whisky, but will I be sitting there sniffing it, appreciating the complex aromas and flavours it presents? Unlikely beyond the first couple of sips so I rarely go for anything too expensive, just something that gets the job done. After that it’s back to my friends and the conversation. The same could be said of perfume. If I like enough to buy a bottle I have to like it enough on its own merits to warrant buying more because if I can’t enjoy it at home, buying an expensive niche fragrance to wear out when I can appreciate it fully is probably a waste of money.

Obviously I like wearing perfume out and I enjoy a little bit of the attention it might garner, but any notion that wearing perfume out of the house for my own benefit goes out of the window when I’m going out for a meal or drinking. I’ve just been for a walk and was wearing Portrait of a Lady and it was a beautiful accompaniment to my walk, but was I paying attention to it and enjoying all of its nuances and complexity? No, but I loved wearing it.

I won't wear 1 million that much or at all, for example, but it doesn't mean it's not a superb fragrance for what it tries to be. Inevitably the fragrance hobby attracts snobs, I mean it's obvious. If you know about Eau Extreme you probably know that the original Sport isn't really worth it anymore. OG Sport is good, but it's a little past it's prime by now and EE is a more contemporary, youthful take on it.

Sport Cologne bears no relation other than name to the rest of the line. It's a straight lemon scent, in all it's zesty, tart glory, with a faint hint of spice and woods. Really nice light scent for hot weather.

The original Allure is personally my favourite of the line. Creamy spiced citrus and woods. It's too good for this world. Fresh and masculine yet warm and inviting. Happy it seems to get the least attention of the line because that means less people wear it.

Edition Blanche is good too and bears the most similarity to the original, but the spices aren't as present and it's all about the lemon and vanilla.

ask this ghuy, but you'll have to explain chemically/technically what happens on skin to give that effect also, instead of "lol no." I do know people have different scent receptors, and paper is a different surface than skin. Ive noticed that smearing perfume from a vial gives a different effect than spraying it on, it seems to give all the notes at once, rather than an evolving pyramid scheme.

So what it sounds like reading this is that nobody is wrong to say that different scents smell different on different people, they're just misapplying a term to the situation because it sounds useful and sciencey. It's nice to know what's really going on with the moisture retention and natural oil levels but it seems like the greater notion of frags smelling different on different mediums/people still holds true.

Enjoy! I can't really imagine anyone disliking it so it should fit that role well. The one complaint that some make is that it may have a "cologny" vibe. I think it may smell that way to some simply because it's been around a while. But in my opinion it has that quality without smelling cheap or generic and smells quite timeless. It's a refreshing departure from the mass-appealing perfumes being released nowadays.

For comparison, something that is in the same ballpark would be YSL L'Homme. They don't smell the same, but play with similar elements: citruses, spices, woods, vanilla/tonka, etc. - a little bit of everything, hence the mass appeal. I find Allure smells much better though.
