Would I be an idiot to buy one of these? I’m looking for a reasonably sized speedmaster homage so I don’t need to deal with the daily winding which really bugs me way more than I thought it would.

Agreed. The only Sinn that's cool is the U1.
Thinking about buying either a blue SMPc or a blue Pelagos. I think the Pelagos will be a highly desirable watch in the future, however the new BB58 in blue has caught my eye. I do like having a date on my watches.

What do you guys think about this Rotary watch that apparantly was featured in Sherlock Holmes. I think it's really good looking and very cheap (120 euro) however it's a quartz and apparantly those suck?

What do you guys think? Are there better alternatives to this type of watch (in terms of looks) ?

>> No.15828584

>>15828557
Well you forgot your image but I think I know which one you are talking about.

First off quartz doesn't "suck", it's much more reliable and accurate than mechanical watches. It's just a matter of if it's important to you that to have a sweeping hand and/or you find it interesting to own a mechanical timepiece.

If you want a mechanical timepiece in the same style you will have to pay a lot more however. For example, Frederique Constant has similar models but they are ten times the price.

Maybe you can find a chinese shitter but that has other downsides.

Rotary's owners, the Dreyfuss family have a small heritage brand named Dreyfuss & Co. where they offer traditionally styled swiss made pieces, including mechanicals with better materials and finishing that Rotary, maybe they have something similar. RRPs are a bit high but they can be had for cheap brand new on the grey market (watchshop, watchhut, etc.) and ebay including discontinued models no longer featured on the brand's site.

Its the Speedmaster, it's not even close.

•Unitas movement
•Nomos but they are lighter to wind so you might feel differently, they are more refined feeling.
•Stowa, more clicks than the Nomos but more slack.
•ST19...... all 3 of mines feel different and I had a 4th (sold) which was different again, some stiffer, lighter winding, less clicky, quiter and less feedback. Off the 3 the Baltic is the best, the crown is a little small.

The 2804 has more slack when winding before the gears engage and reverse quite a bit after a wind. The peseaux is far tighter feeling and has more smaller clicks per turn (small wheels / gears). The peseaux feels more refined than the 2804, crown action is better as well, pops better and feels better setting the time but I would say it is a more delicate movement and would take less to break it.

I can't find the exact one you posted, and yours is the coolest-looking one I agree, but the fairfields all seem to go for ~$80/90+ and they're all 41mm. the width in the pic below yours seems really unnecessary for quartz. iunno, if it weren't for the case size $80 would be ok but I mean it's probably just the same movement as an easy reader or weekender in a fatter case so nah.
if you image search weekender or easy reader you'd be surprised how many styles there are and they're a reasonable size, 38 I think.
I will say I miss indiglo, a version of it really ought to be standard for all quartz imo.

Timex quartz movements are cheaply made and not very reliable. If you go look at them at the watch section in Target, they tick so loudly that you can hear them a few feet away, even with the bustle of the store. That could be a plus to you but I wouldn't spend my money on one.

You have to remove the polarising film that's probably glued to the module, which is pretty tricky to do without fucking up even slightly (the LCD is quite easy to chip). Then get some replacement film, find the orientation that reverses the display (90° to the orientation for regular display) then cut the film to size and awkwardly glue it on to the LCD.
I did all that with a watch I didn't particularly like and it wasn't really worth it, the visibility was pretty poor, even worse than commercially available reverse displays.

In UK, Rolex and omega prices seem to have all increased in the last 2 years by around £1000. I owned two omegas and flipped them making around £500 each one and now I want to buy a speedy again and they’re all super expensive! Is this because of the shitty bong pound?

If you spend $3k on a watch just make sure you fucking love it and plan on wearing it for a long ass time. Obviously you could get away with a cheaper watch, but theres no shame in wanting a nice time piece. The issue comes from when you are never happy with what you have and are constantly looking for the “next” watch to complete your “collection.” Buy what you like. What you'll enjoy. >Invicta launched 36 timepieces to the edge of space and documented every step of the remarkable journey via video. The watches were secured on specially designed, structured payloads made of lightweight carbon fiber.
>The entire mission was filmed using highly specialized cameras and equipment that was able to withstand the unique nature of the project given weather, speed of travel and the atmospheric nature of the process.
>Working closely with Benjamin Longmier, we were able to determine exactly what these watches were exposed to during their deployment to reach these exceptional heights and their journey returning to earth.
>This collaboration was the 1st of its kind. No other watch company has put their timepieces to the test in such a significant and exciting way. New frontiers of accomplishment and ability, fortitude arrived. An expedition that only Invicta time could successfully handle, and did.

All the Seiko movements derived from the 7000 series (so 7S, 6R anf 4R) are thick because of the magic lever auto winding that sits between the rotor and main bridge. It's thinner than the early designs that just had a full auto winding bridge slapped on originally hand-winding movements, but can't be made much thinner. Some 9S Grand Seikos use it too, though it's flipped to the underside of the bridge. You really need reverser wheels on the same level as the train to get really thin auto movements, like the 6L and the new GS movement have. Ironically, Seiko already had several good thin mainstream designs with reverser wheels in the 60's and 70's, but threw them all away (except the 52 series, which was resurrected as 4S and quickly moved to expensive pieces only).

You can get a Patek Calatrava for $5k in that style, but quartz movement. Automatic movement will be close to $10k. The clasp alone will be about $3k, though.

Replying here too because the other thread actually looks useless.

Cool options.

The San Martin Nautilus looks dope, but I would pass just for the protruding endlinks problem. Even my $30 shitter does better than that, There is no excuse for this horror.

The C. Ward is super nice, but it looks impossible to dress up. May or may not be a problem for you.

Zelos watches are all over the place, but wh am I to judge. Pic related.

The Aikon feels like the safe choice. Some people belittle it as a APRO homage, but I think that it looks unique enough to keep a place in your collection regardless of what you'll get afterwards.

You line up the current exchange rate and look at the number opposing 37.2, It's not hard.

I'm looking for a moonphase only watch, no hands or anything else on the dial. Also a day/night watch with only a representation of day and night remaining - that would be a very complicated complication, tho.

With the exception of dress watches, if a watch is not scratched, either its owner is caring way too much, or he never wears it. Both are sad to me.

Unrelated :
I hesitating between three watches for an everyday wear :
Citizen Chronomaster AQ4030-51L
Wempe Iron Walker
Monta Noble

Any opinion?

Alright. Thanks for the response, anons. I think ill be going with the CW since I've really only heard good things about their quality (plus I like the design a lot).

Uh, once it's set it's set, no need to google it.

When you are travelling, getting the real-time exchange rate doesn't matter much.

Thanks for your feedback.

In the end I went for the Monta, your comment made me realise that the dégradé was the X factor for me.

Having handled the other ones, they are super neat, its just that the Citizen's design is a little to cold for what I want it to be (engagement watch), and the Wempe... Well, it would just remind me that I want an Overseas but will probably never spend this kind of silly money.

Now that it's ordered, I have no regret. So I guess that it was the right decision for me.
