>“Radium was banned because of radioactive radiation from about 1955. The company Tourist found itself not being able to read the time during the night. That’s how the idea of developing the world’s first electric lighting in a mechanical wristwatch came around,”
>The tender to become NASA’s chronograph for astronauts wasn’t the only breath-taking watch race in history. The underrated and often overlooked Swiss brand Tourist was the first brand to market a mechanical watch with a light function.
>Forget about the 1980’s backlit displays. Imagine we are in 1956, and somebody dreams about a mechanical watch with a little light bulb to be activated when you want to read the time at night. You would need a battery, right? The battery, a small lead DEAC dry accumulator, was built into the case back.
>All Tourist Everlight watches are illuminated by a small 1.2mm bulb sticking through a tiny hole above the 12. And if you explore the pictures, you have to admit that the bulb installation is done in a very subtle and elegant manner.
>In the middle section, between the white plastic housing and the lighting circuit, there is a steel ring touching the bottom part of the case back. The classic screw-down case back is surprisingly thin and houses the battery. The battery comes in contact with the steel ring from the inside once being screwed down.
>The battery was designed to provide reliable service for years before having to be recharged. Recharging was possible without any disassembly, using an ordinary 1.5-volt battery. It was enough to stick the positive impulse to the housing and negative impulse to the winding crown.

Slim and it’s not even close. The only reason I could think of wanting a fatter watch is for better durability but I’m not doing manual labor in a thin watch anyway, I’m wearing a G-Shock.

i rather get a seiko fuyugeshiki
the ladies one is the 34mm which is classic dress size, all it needs is a nice leather strap
it has the exact same specs as the mens, just in a smaller size.
it has lots of personality but in a subtle way
vertical snowflake dial and great finishing too.

That’s great and all but I don’t understand your point. You’re paying more for better finishing and an in-house movement, like I said in my initial post.

You could make a highly autistic argument regarding the merits of a decorated ETA vs in-house at that price point if you wanted to, but the fact remains that it is a selling point for the brand regardless.

If I were to spend 3-5 grand on one nice daily watch that could also be a dress watch, what would you recommend? I was thinking a used 36mm or 39mm Rolex Explorer. Any other recommendations? Is 36mm too small for daily wear, or would it be fine if it were a Rolex? Is 39mm too large for a dress watch? I have fairly large wrists and I am 5'11", if it matters.

You can get two really good modern starter watches (one dress and one sport) for 5k or so. You could also get a good Tudor if you just want sport, or a vintage Vacheron if you want dress.

$500 watches will get you a wide variety of lesser watches. They won’t be bad, maybe, but watches are to be collected as a part of one’s life and one’s changing taste over that lifetime. I recommend one or two really good watches you love right now, wait a few years until you have expendable income again; see how your taste changes; and then add another great watch or two then. Rome wasn’t built in a day... and by buying one watch now, you’ll ensure you end up buying one that you REALLY love now, since it’s going to be your only watch for a while. If you buy 3-4 shitters you may end up only bonding with at most one of them.

I like the Baltic and Vario and doubt they’re worth anything used. I wouldn’t buy anymore shitters though, especially not microbrand shitters. Keep buying them impulsively and before you know it you’ll have spent $10k on dogshit.

Nomos is a GREAT smaller brand in the 2k range for dress and sports watches. Yes, Reddit loves them a lot, but they really are a great Glashutte watch for a great low price. That’s kind of the low-end for that high end Saxon manufacturing, there are tiers of quality and price even in Glashutte watchmaking — going from Nomos to Glashutte Original (can be had under 10k) to of course Lange and micro brands.

Omega speed masters are great chronographs with a good history and wear great in many situations and straps. You can get a great Zenith or IWC chrono in the sub 10k range as well. For a weirder but interesting pick, there are others such as Tag Monaco line.

I could go further but there are a shitload of amazing sub 10k watches. That includes most of the best Rolexes at MSRP too. Really there isn’t a 10k in quality; it’s a 20k cutoff where you start seeing the lower end of higher horology (or the absolute top end of good horology). You start getting amazing quality in the 2k range and ethereal quality in the 20k range.

To add to this, I walked into a watch store once intending to take a look at some entry level Pateks, and the two watches I ended up staring at the most was the bronze black bay Tudor ($4000ish) and some low end mechanical Tissot dress watch (maybe $500). It’s amazing how good some $500 watches look in person. I can tell you that as far as fashion goes: women will notice that you wear a nice watch at most (nice being $500+) and other men will notice the brand; men will notice that you dress well, and women will notice exactly how you dress. If you’re looking to impress other businessmen, then yes, go expensive. If you want sex appeal, get a watch that looks nice and tick off that box, and start getting some very nice outfits.

Because odds are good you’ll end up selling a watch down the line. The average person doesn’t want more than ~8ish watches. To keep a collection from ballooning out of control, it often makes sense to sell one to fund another. It is not like you can actually get a sense of fulfillment in buying and wearing watches, unlike something no one else will care about like model trains because at least that requires work and drive outside of spending money. Would've said the 36 under any circumstances before, but saw a guy wearing the 39 this summer and it looks pretty good on a bigger wrist. My heart still says 36, though. The lume woukdn't be a factor for me, it will die anyway.

Calorie counting only works if your gut is constantly in deficit mode. Then every 7000 kcal amounts to about 1 kg of stored fat, assuming ideal burn which doesn't happen if you're sedentary (thank the kopohavirus for that). Basically you need to either fast to get there, or bike like 15-20 km once or twice a week, just to get started losing weight.

I don't suggest doing that in the wintertime btw, lots of people in metric countries getting homicidally grumpy without their winter foods.
