Mechanifags are delusional about accuracy, a cheap quartz beater will hold better time and for longer than any mechanical. The COSC demands for quartzes are absolutely insane, if you get a COSC quartz or a radio controlled solar powered piece, you are reaching >>15812968 levels of precision. Or some of the high frequency quartzes, whatever.

Another point being your overall looks. If you look like an uncharismatic greasy dork that dressed up for an interview after researching GQ articles and youtuber videos on the subject, an expensive watch wont get your foot in the door.
A closing point perhaps, a watch being one of the few acceptable "jewelry" on men. Wedding band or university/celebratory ring being another, earrings, necklaces and bead bracelets grinding on the hinge of cringe. At any rate, are cuban link and rope chains still a thing outside of pavement ape performers?
Modern times allow for a lot of stupid shit including tattoos and tailored beards, but if you think in terms of timeless classics, a well kept man with a few shiny bits and clear skin in good fitting clothes is top.

Pic related to throw all my arguments out the window. A handsome person can do just about anything, but if they fit the rest, the outcome is ultimate.

I like winding watches because I like the artistry and engineering behind a functional little machine that never needs battery power to work. I don't mind setting the time every few days or week, and if I need a chronograph for something I have other timers and watches for that. There's just something so appealing to me about a finely made machine which functions simply on mechanical movement and nothing more.

What good is an inaccurate watch? I hate a person that is not on time, as they will be unreliable in other ways as well.
To counter your statement, Rolex, as much as I hate them, makes a thing of selling thier shit as OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED, then ETA and Sellita grades reaching chronometre specs to those who want, GS Spring Drive being insane, Citizen Chronomaster being absolutely unbelievable. Radio-adjustment to the atomic clock being a thing whatsoever, UHF Bulovas and WHP Longines quartz movements existing are ALL shitting on your opinion.

I mean, it does, but to me relying on a battery seems like a cop-out when it comes to this sort of thing. Every issue today seems to have a electrical item made for its convenience. That screenshot earlier in the thread is basically right in saying watches are more jewelry than tool, but I think that's selling it short. Watches are also a "marvel" to me, which includes the appreciation for the design and purpose as well as the appearance.

I'm not dissing quartz watches, most of mine are quartz, but there is just something special about a mechanical watch that feels connected to centuries, or millennia, of engineering involved in its design. Winding and setting a watch almost feels like a ritual to me at this point, as faggy as that sounds. It feels very special, to me.

A lot of watch owners wont give two shits about the tiny mechanics. A lot, again, might, if they are carfags or otherwise interested in gizmos of any sort. To the average spouse picking a christmas present, "automatic" will only be a buzzword that the storewhore laid on them as they "came back into fashion". Otherwise they will pick a japanese titanium quartz that needs at best a battery change every 4 years and be done with it for practical purposes, or they think non-battery powerded watches are old shit that always needs upkeep.
Or be like other people out of the know and just going for what THEY think looks good, or going with whatever with a familiar name within their price range (Tissot).

If you like the microengineering behind a mechanical piece, it is a crying shame of ever getting one with a solid caseback. Yes, non-finished industrial movements can be downright disgusting, but if moving gears and springs and bits are your thing, you will find joy in any workhorse.

Autos are the middle point, and a category of their own for that reason, Id say.
Watches for those who dont want a "cheap" quartz watch, want to flex with a superior mechanical (whatever that means), but dont actually give enough of a fuck about the whole watch thing, so they just wear it and it keeps time and shows their desired status.

If I ever worked a job where wearing watches was a thing, Id go with a top grade Stowa Marine 36 and have it as a heirloom. Yes, Im a poorfag, but I still think there are no options in that niche of aesthetic at that price point, with that amount of worth for your money.

No, Longines, Im not buying your oversized faux patina 3 BAR shitter for 1200+
Neither am I buying a Tisell, because their hour markers are ridiculously large and I already have their B-Uhr in the same case shape.

Anecdote, Tisell watches have enamel dials, Stowa for 3-4 times more only has "extra bright" paint on theirs.

An extremely worth of an achievement of human inguenuity in its own right. The other questions one might ask is why are we still going down this road, why are companies with mechanical movements trying to come up with new materials or alloys to counter physical limitations (magnetism) that electronics solved for them decades ago?
Why do mechanical movements still even exist in this day and age? Coming up with new calibers is another way of spending ridiculous money on unimportant shit, but thats corporate and clientelle for you.
Why are mechanical watches still trying so damn hard to stay relevant and in the game, why are the companies STILL coping with coming out new materials like silicone hairsprings, amagnetic parts, submarine steel cases and other ridiculous shit when goddamn quartz handed their asses to them 30 years ago.
My vote is on the whole marketing and meme deal "swiss made" etc. making easy prey of new money people that dont know shit with money to burn.

just the fact that a mechanical movement is something you can track with your eye is a lot cooler than staring at a circuit board.

There is this predisposition in quartz watches that if the movement is cheap to produce, the whole watch needs to be and feel like it. I really wish more microbrands would experiment with quartz movements and interesting dial/case options. But no, everybody went crazy for mechanical and now everything has a Seiko/Sellita/ETA/Miyota automatic in it for no good reason. In the age of electricity, pretty much all non-electronic mechanical things are becoming obsolete and phased out. Bicycles and mechanical watches are basically the last survivors of the old era that still have some relevance, easy fast transportation and keeping time.
Mechanical watches had to reinvent themselves as luxury products to survive the quartz revolution, and I think bikes will probably face a similar crisis, although not as severe, as eclectic bikes are really starting to take off.
You can take your bike up a mountain without breaking a sweat now, but there will always be enthusiasts that want to use their own strength instead. The charm and simplicity of fixed gear bikes is an early revolt and part of that.

this hublot has 11 barrels and 1,200 hours or 50 days of power reserve
the current record holder is a VC with 65 days of power reserve (it has an energy saving mode)

outside of HH watches, longer than average power reserves are not a rarity anymore. For example the Oris Aquis has a 5 day power reserve, their higher end models with the 110 calibre has a 10 day power reserve. Even a sub $1000 watch like a seiko prospex alpinist now has a 70 hour reserve, almost 3 days.

as long as the movement is capable of handwinding you can just spend like 10 to get a few winds in. And if you really really want to, you can get an autowinder.

the skx is a trash watch that could at times be had for $100 but the price is being jacked up because it was discontinued a year ago and it's been memed into being some legendary historical icon by pretentious watch blogs and hipster imbeciles. it's a decent watch but not worth over $200 and there are much better watches for only slightly more money or even in the same price rage (orient mako/ray and san martin homages)
the omemega is a good quality watch from a reputable, old, and well-known watchmaker and it has some good technology in it despite that the implementation of some of that technology is dubious, that said its typical secondhand pricing of around $2000-$2800 is better indication of its true value

Speaking of Islander
I really wish they made this one just a tad smaller, i like it but I don't feel I can pull 43mm off.

So its all marketing? Because the seamaster is better in hand than watch sub £2k. You must be a Sekio poor fag because if you ever handled a nice watch you would know.

It never ceases to amaze me that people pay thousands for a watch that's made of steel. Call it poorfag cope if you want but for $4,000 I'd expect at least titanium.

>buy an orient kamasu
No. was considering buying one and during googling found a guy on reddit who bought one. Messaged him asking about the watch. He said the crown broke/fell off in the first year.
