When will 3D printing or whatever is the next step after that get so good that you can just get most of a watch out of a machine if you give it a design file (maybe not at home, but at least from a service provider) for a reasonable price? I guess that would truly DISRUPT THE INDUSTRY. I totally would download a watch.

As someone who repairs vintage watches as a hobby I'd mostly be interested in the same process for spare parts though. Fuck collectors and their all original bullshit. I like watches that work. Most of my time is spent waiting for single parts coming from a guy in god knows where.

one of the perennial choices around here for a dress watch but they have their own share of nitpicks like being a tad too big (this is true for almost all seiko dress watches) and "too flashy". The domed mineral crystal is a scratch magnet too.

It’s more like an art piece to be honest. 47mm is insanely big unless you are Schwarzenegger size anyway and paying $60k+ on top makes it a hard sell. I think they retailed at like $150k+ though...you’d have to be a real Panerai nut to buy one. Their spouses can also easily find a christmas present watch at the local mall at a relatively reasonable price (under €200). Citizen, Casio. all on a metal bracelt, of course. Radio controlled? They do tend to be expensive. For reference the movement is 200 bux new and pretty niche compared to an ETA 2824 so 1000 is probably the cheapest you'll get it in a watch unless you can find one discounted on the grey market. Stowa sells their 6498 watch's for €1200 or something but they are decorated very nicely. Think archimede sell theirs for €800 but its undecorated. Even in watches with lots of positional variance and worn vs. resting variance you can still try to center the spread by regulating the watch. Do so well and should easily be possible to get most entry level mechanical movements to run withing +/- 5 SPD in use.

Also, I think positional variation might be a bit overemphasized relative to worn vs. resting rate, which has more to do with the stability of the timing rate while being subjected to the constant small shocks of being worn. Even free sprung balance movements with minimal positional variance will often still have a noticeable difference in timing performance when worn vs when resting.

>However, as is often the case in watchmaking, enhancing aesthetic appeal is not a purely gratuitous operation. While Geneva’s watchmaking has long been known for its refinement and its ornamentation, its Côtes or stripes also serve a third purpose, since these scratches create a rough surface that picks up dust. In the age of pocket watches with open backs, this ‘particle trap’ was about as much use as a poultice on a wooden leg. But as cases gradually came to be closed and thus far more airtight, Côtes de Genève took on new importance. During the early phases of industrialisation in the watchmaking valleys, the hunt for dust was simply no longer practically feasible. Côtes de Genève were a partial response to this problem, since this finish served to capture the microparticles flying around the workshops and to prevent them from settling in lubricants and on movement jewels or pivots. So useful did they prove that the German watchmakers of the Saxony region also adopted them, albeit under the name of Glashütte stripes.

>le hand finish doesn't affect timekeeping
There are functional aspects to movement finishing that do directly affect timekeeping in terms of friction, tightness of tolerances, precision of fit, etc.

Purely decorative finishing is an artform. It doesn't have to be be practically useful for people to appreciate the care, attention, and skilled hand labour that goes into applying it.

If they really add a master co-axial escapement to the MOTFM it would make the watch a bit less of an egregious rip-off. they need to step up the external finishing on it as well. It's embarrassing how hard the external finishing on the steel 321 dunks on the MOTFM at present.

It’s not surprising considering the 321 retails for $14k and until recently you could get a moonwatch for ~$3.5k grey market. I assume the new movement (and significantly higher price) will entail better finishing, but you never know with Omega. They have some real greedy fuckhead executives over there.

It's back in stock lads!
They fixed the bracelet issue so you can now use all 4 micro adjust holes.
I should warn i saw a few complaints that the brushing on the case in between the lugs isn't as nice as it is on the rest of the watch, you can catch some tiny glimpses of it on some of the youtube reviews.

>They have some real greedy fuckhead executives over there.
Very true, but at least they have been cleaning up their act a bit for the last several years. Omega's used to have literally Tissot tier external finishing 10 years ago, along with movements that were regularly eating themselves kek.

Is that they are too soft and I think if you actually wore one daily for a decade or so it would get absolutely beat to shit unless you very carefully babied it. Or you would be polishing bit constantly and eventually end up with something half the size of the original watch.

Really only okay for NASA larping, maybe okay for throwing on a beater.
>mn vs parachute straps
The paratrooper straps like the ones cheapest nato sells are probably more comfortable and easy to use then the full blown MN straps. They might be a little less secure since the free end isn't captured and everything is held with friction so i would want to wear it around the house for a while and make sure i felt confident it would stay put before i wore it out doing things.
>diver velcros too?
I don't really like hook and loop + water. It's fine and stays together no problem submerged but i think it would get dirty and smell if you were actually wearing it in the ocean frequently. I think rubber is best for the water but really all this is subjective and mostly personal preference.

Seems like 1 step forward, two steps backward. All the powermatic 80 watches that are the same price as the 2824 equivalent have plastic escapements. While I don't mind the lower beat rate at all and applaud the free-sprung balance and longer power reserve, the plastic escapement is a fatal flaw that can't be ignored. If I had to choose between a powermatic 80 or a 2824 for the same price, I'd go with the 2824. Did a bit of online shopping and found that most powermatic 80 watches have a 2824 equivalent for the same price.
