We can now 3D print metal.
How long until some rogue company catches on and starts 3D printing movements, cases, everything sans glass from scratch?

How many decades or centuries would it take for the old names in the industry take to catch on? How long would they beat the "hand made in switzerland" meme?

Let's try again with my quartz "tool watch" obsession. Is there something that has:

a) field/military/tacticool style that isn't plastic so no G-Shock
b) analog and not digital, perhaps digital bits would be fine but mainly analog
c) not plastered with G-Shock-like text everywhere
d) has all kinds of sensors and complications like compass, temperature, height, millisecond chrono, etc.
e) isn't Casio Edifice because it looks too mall-like in design
f) isn't a smart watch
g) has solar and atomic time

Am I looking for something that just plain doesn't exist at all? Edifice comes closest but the style just isn't there.

You can tell that they gave that deep black colour you get from curing with lye. Its a waybof quickly and cheaply curing olives rather than the traditional in brine methods.

Thise black olives start off green and turn that deep black colour, its not a natural natural colour like the black/purple colour you get with katamala olives.

The difference in taste and texture is night and day.

yes these are great watches, but all together its all very safe mainstream picks and theres no levity

you should collect what you *really* like
theres no need for "i must have 1 watch in every category". There are collectors with 500 HMT watches or only divers in their box. And thats fine desu.

I've heard that a few times, but honestly my style is pretty low-key and reserved. I love every one of these, especially the top row. The Pelagos just because I swear a diver 90% of the time and it's the least blingy, then the Speedmaster and Leipzig because of the history (plus a type B Fleiger dial is honestly insanely nice to read).

The other two frankly don't get much wear and I'm not quite as attracted to, those were definitely just ticking the dress watch and beater watch boxes.

Watch collecting can be an expensive habit er I mean hobby. Typically it is something I greatly enjoy, and get happiness from. Recently a friend of my wife needed help with her banking after a divorce. I met her after meeting a high profile client, and was wearing my Rolex. Long story short, I realize during our time together, that the cost of my watch was more then she makes in 6 months. It was the first time I felt embarrassed, and a little ashamed of my opulence. Don't get me wrong, I work hard for the modest middle class living I have. But it made me wonder.....Am I alone?

The actual answer is that display backs come at a cost. It’s another point of failure for tool watches, increases overall thickness, and reduces water resistance at depth. I get where the OP is coming from but I think it's all relative.
Sure, I could sell my watches, my car, most of my clothes etc. and use the money to help people less fortunate than I am, but almost everyone could do the same. I think it's important to have some sort of balance.
I was travelling around India lately and came across some pretty poor places, but after talking to quite a few people there I realised a lot of them are happier than a lot of wealthier people I know in London!

So of course if I sold a watch and gave the money to someone less fortunate than me they would probably do a lot more than just buy a watch with it. But money isn't everything, and money doesn't make everyone happy.

The first time it really struck me was three or four years ago, when I was bargain hunting for a charity that my office participates in--people contribute, we "adopt" a number of children, then we buy them gifts for the holidays. I went straight from work. Wearing a watch that costs more than entire amount that my group contributed to the charity (the whole office, of course, put in more, but my group had like 50 kids at $150 per kid). I mean, I was doing something good, but it still felt weird.

People often define themselves as poor, merely because they are unable to buy everything they want. The same person who thinks a $5000 (or $15,000) watch is conspicuous consumption might go fishing at the weekend in their $50,000 bass boat--hauled by their $50,000 Ford F350 diesel truck that they justified because they occasionally carry two sheets of plywood. Or, maybe they have a $5000 deer rifle or shotgun. Or, they drive an Escalade with wheels that cost $1000 each and tires that cost another grand each, which is big enough to hold the 60" flat panel TV they just bought. The point is that people who self-identify as poor often are not, but they may be driven by jealousy to try to make us feel guilty for our time-keeping display of wealth.

If you're only going to have a few watches, probably shouldn't make them all be divers. If you're only going to have three whiskeys in your house, probably shouldn't be all bourbons. If you're going to only keep three types of cigars around, probably shouldn't all be Dominican with Connecticut wrappers. If you're going to keep two pairs of headphones, probably shouldn't both be closed back.

With a small collection I think it's important to still try and cover as much ground as you can so you don't get bored.
