Reposting from previous thread. How many watches should a poorfag have?

I'm thinking 4-5, please critique this:

1) G-Shock or equivalent as the worst beater possible when you're chopping wood and cleaning the septic tank and shit
2) metal G-Shock or another quartz watch for a daily beater if you work a blue collar job, if not skip this tier
3) slightly nicer watch (Sinn/IWC/Breitling-tier for example) as a real daily beater
4) a cheap Rolex or Omega or Tudor (if you can stomach the can't afford a Rolex stigma) for dressing up
5) no dress watch because you never wear a suit anyway, you can wear 4) instead

What do you think? Is it possible to consolidate this even further?

>For the right mathematically inclined person, this is a charming watch with enough luxury elements to keep it from being a merely cheap novelty. Maker Fortis is like Omega, but for Cosmonauts, not Astronauts. The watch of the Russian space program. As such, Fortis has typically maintained a line of serious tool watches with function and durability in mind. Art watches are not their game for the most part. Then you have this watch, which is a decidedly different type of watch from the serious watch designer.
>Designer Rudy Sachs apparently always wanted to make this watch, and found Fortis to be an able and willing partner. Why Fortis? For good reason actually. Maybe of the brands loyalists are math fanatics or work in computation intensive areas. Programmers, engineers, pilots, etc… These people can afford the $1000 – $3000 range watches, and appreciate their handsome, no nonsense approach. Fortis figured that with a limited edition of just 999 IQ watches, it was worth testing out.

That's the curse of being poor - three beater tiers since you can't afford to wear your nice watch as a daily work watch, and you can't afford to wear your semi-nice watch as a shitter beater. It costs more than it would cost a middle class person who can just wear a single watch for all those uses because they don't keep company with poor people so they can just wear something like an Omega everywhere.

Hey all, looking for a suggestion for a watch.
Budget: $300 USD
Type: Dress
Movement: Not sure on this to be honest.
Features: Nothing super high-spec is necessary. Roman numerals are a plus though.
Strap: Leather
Size: My wrist is 6 3/8", so I'm guessing a 36 or 38mm would be best here?

Appreciate any help, have found a couple of models I like but the price is usually what puts me off. Cheers.

VC Overseas vs. AP Royal Oak

OVERSEAS PROS:

- Royal Oak aesthetic without being done-to-death ubiquitous like the RO
>in a room full of rich snobs, half of them will be wearing Rolex and 25% Royal Oaks

- nice level of hand finishing in the top Swiss tradition under the Geneva Seal
>the Royal Oak 15500 on the other hand has virtually zero hand finishing

- tremendous brand heritage
>oldest continuously operating watch brand in existence

ROYAL OAK PROS:

- the RO is the actual original design of this type and remains virtually unchanged since 1971
>the Overseas on the other hand is a virtually new design from 2017

- Audemars Piguet is still in the hands of the original Audemars family
>VC on the other hand is part of Richemont (although Richemont is still white European owned)

- holds value a lot better

- the guilloche dial is extremely interesting
>although some of the Overseas dials are nice too, like the blue one which is virtually the same as the FP Journe Chronomètre Bleu

Thoughts?

Guys, if I wanted a """dress watch""" (quotes because my budget doesn't allow me to buy a real good one, it's just the kind of style) under 150$ hat'd you recommend? I've already asked a couple of times here and read the sticky, so I'm aware of stuff like Orient, Citizen, Vostok, Seiko... I was wondering though if anyone could recommend a fancy gold watch (so it matches my other accessories) regardless of movement - I'm actually fine with quartz, I don't see why should I bother with a less precise watch that'd need more maintenance if we're talking about something for that budget. Happened to me when my Rolex (Yachtmaster) broke. My other watch, a Breitling Colt Ocean Automatic, had been out of commission and sitting in the safe for years. I didn't feel like taking either one in for "service," as I knew it would be expensive.

For a few months I went without a watch at all. Then I decided to pick up a "cheap" Casio (G-Shock) to tide me over... to have SOMEthing to tell the time on my wrist.

Four months later, I've got 20 Casios (16 G-Shocks, 1 Classic, 2 Pro Treks, and 1 Oceanus). But, it gets crazier... now I'm writing for an up and coming watch blog!

Ironically, the foray down the Casio rabbit hole (that started as a way to procrastinate paying to get my 2 Swiss pieces repaired) ended up re-igniting my desire to get the Rolex and Breitling fixed... which I did. So, now I have 22 watches to rotate!

Why are mechanifag companies so slow to pick up on antimagnetism, or shock resistance, or waterproofness? Like goddamn, magnetism is such a common occurence nowadays. Watches from a century ago were able to be (somewhat) antimagnetic, why just the current hype of hurr we came up with a new silicone bullshit, expensive titanium (it isnt) cases, soft iron cages, amagnetic alloys, now pay us ridiculous money.
Shut the fuck up, quartz has you beat in all fields, your only argument is muh soul. Nigger what soul, you take decades, if not centuries to find a solution that a few electric gizmos do more precisely and for a longer time. And no, I dont have the latest greatest tech smartphone, I have a shitheap that will last a long time, yet function reliably. Your china-produced, swiss-assembled overpriced trinket wont.

They both beat at the same rate, the miyota is a thinner movement, which is why it's the only option in the smaller one. It also only winds in one direction, so the rotor spinds freely in the other direction, this doesn't really matter except it can make some noise if you whip your wrist around and get it spinning quickly. The eta is a more premium movement and might be worth repairing, the miyota is relatively chep, i think around $50 or $60 on the aftermarket, so when it needs to be serviced you would probably just buy a new one and have your watchmaker swap it out. The miyota is a pretty new design, it's popular with microbrands because it is thinner and has a higher beat rate then the seiko nh35 while still being affordable and easy for microbrands to buy. Haven't heard anything bad about them except the rotor noise thing i mentioned.

The Royal Oak was such a tremendous success it transformed the mechanical/luxury watch industry and saved the Swiss watch industry from the quartz crisis you mook.

It was a steel watch with no complications that cost more than gold complicated watches of the time, and it's what turned mechanical watches from simply utilitarian tools to luxury items.

It was such a success that big daddy Patek asked the same designer to design a version for them.

Yeah I was the same, I didn't realize that 42mm on a diver is like nothing because there's a ton of bezel that minimizes the face of the watch. But on a classic style watch it looks like you have a fucking wall clock on your wrist.
I like Laco but the Stowa is more appealing for more reasons than just size. The hand shape is much more elegant, the crown is better done in both the shape and quality of the knurling, the placement of the small seconds is better, the track on the small seconds is well executed, the numerals in stark black make for great contrast and readability, and the triangle at the 12 mirroring the dash at the 6 add a subtle character to the watch. A lack of lume means this is leaning al in on being a dress watch too.

OK first off the Seiko 5 is not a dive watch at all, it's got 100M water resistance and no screw down crown. It's basically a fashion watch/sport watch. The Orient Mako, while not a true DIVER'S ISO watch, has twice the water resistance and is a serious diver. It has a dive time bezel, which the Seiko does not have.
The main difference between ISO certified watches is that they have to meet specific criteria, not just in water resistance but also a degree of antimagnetism and shock resistance. Now, most modern watches have a low level of magnetic resistance and shock resistance, but if someone just puts 200M on the dial it means they only really had to test for water resistance, you don't actually know if they did the other stuff. They might have tested for everything else too, but you can't know for sure.
I would get the Orient or upgrade to a Kamasu if you want a sapphire crystal and a much sharper but still versatile design

orient watches are great, the value they offer is exceptional
i have nothing against open hearts, I think they are quirky.
the regular bambinoes are slightly too big though, theres 36mm ladies/unisex version which is better, even for guys (if you change out the aggressively tapering bracelet for a nice leather strap). But i dont think theres an open heart version of these, not sure

another small complaint is the noisy rotor from the seiko magic lever system. The winding is very efficient but the rattling is audible. (similar to seiko 5 but maybe 10% louder)
