>During my trip, I also talked to a watchmaker.
>He made watches for Rolex. He has worked for lots of high-end brands. Brands within the region of Rolex, and I asked this question is “Rolex worth it?”
>Similar to the chairman of ORIS, he got very serious and his body language changed and his facial expression changed as if he had something serious to tell me as if you need to listen because what I’m about to say is going to be some room to it and he said that absolutely worth it.
>They don’t innovate but what they create is the best, this is what he said.
>To be honest, I don’t know enough about that stuff to comment all I’m going to say it I have enough trust in the brand Rolex to just believe that what they do is good.
>And that’s it. I’ve really got a lot of bashing because of the kind of status that Rolex has, that they are rich man’s watch and I don’t think they are rich man’s watch although they’re expensive watches, I’m not going to deny that.

>> No.15718046

Depends on what the dial is made out of, lume is easy to stain but no idea about dials.
Some anon posted a fake rolex explorer they got recently where they had stained the lume with coffee.
You might want to hit up the model painting nerds on the toy board or table games or wherever they are hanging out these days and looking into doing a patina with some model paint. They have some products to simulate grime or grease that you could really thin out and apply to put some age on the dial.

I need some 200IQ guy to solve this for me. What does the 24 hour track and the sun symbol mean? Already excluded:
>sunset/rise timer, sun sets and rises at different times 19-20:00 would not be useful
>position of the sun during specific hours so you can use it as compass

So these two are nonsense, of course, but these were the only ideas i had. I need your help to solve it, guys.

I will agree with you completely on that one. Any watch over 3.95$ quartz is a 'luxury' item, and should be seen as such. Value is not an issue unless you are doing comparative shopping for vintage or on the grey market, and even then the argument becomes 'I got this watch at a better price than people can normally get it', not 'this watch is actually worth xxx more because of xxx'.

It was, thankfully, a fraction of what you quoted, including the service fee from Omega for the Mark 40.

The Casio is a nice watch, no doubt, for the price point; it's not a shitter by any means. It does what it's supposed to do.

I think the emotional effect we can get from watches we enjoy wearing is severely understated in today's watchmarket. The only justification there is to spend money on a watch is 'because I want/like/love it'. Everything else is a needless comparison.

I love the design and execution of the Mark 40, but a dumbphone can do more. That makes the watch completely useless and redundant. I recognize that, and I think anyone who owns and enjoys mechanical watches perceives this as well.

Do you only like this Casio, or are there others you like too?

The unmovable compass bezel is so that when you find south using the sun/hour hand method, you can orient your watch (presumably off your wrist and on a flat surface, such as a hard-backed map) accordingly and not have to translate that on the fly. I'm gonna assume the sun symbol and 24-mark track is for maintaining direction of travel: you'd remember one of the little numbers and put the sun at 7 o'clock. There's 24 marks for double precision compared to just the 12 hours, and no more than 24 because the sun-and-hour method isn't too precise as you get farther off the equator.

You'd be batshit loco to rely on a wristwatch for compass operations (because most people who die innawoods do so during the night), but it's a backup you can have in case your actual compass is a smartphone that drains its battery, or a fluid-mounted fancy thing that shattered when you fell down that hillside.
