Old Sinn 140?, I don't remember it having tachymeter and it having a inner bezel instead of it. It was a space watch, I don't think it was used outside the ship, but was used in the space.

>>15684520
>What's the airplane hand for? Really liking this design.
It was like that because that was the Lemania desings, other watches with the same movement had the same hand, it is very distinctive. New sinn 140 also has that kind of hand as a homage, but the movement is not a Lemania even though the modified Valjoux works in the same way. If I had the money, I would buy that new chrono, it looks nice and has a decent tech, and looks cooler than the sneedmaster, pic related is the new model, it has meme coating that apparently is almost unscratchable, antireflective coating, and gas inside it that prevents humidification inside the watch.I really like that aesthetic of old military watches, Tutima also has some old and new nice models.

The current Amfibia parts are not the same as the ones commissioned for the army in the USSR days, and the movements currently used is also a slightly modernized (in that they added a date window). The cases have also changed from the original version because of problems going from the blueprints to production with different materials. But as >>15684908 said, some of the current cases have not changed for decades.
The military-issue Vostoks were, ironically enough, not as sturdy as the civilian versions released once Raketa and Poljot were commissioned instead of Vostok.

Yes and no.
A bunch of their designs in the last few years have been taking the piss off the rest of the industry with stuff like the Crash being a parody of others trying to do really dumb, impractical "high concept" watches ; or their "golf watch" poking fun at how useless some of the "sport" oriented high-end watches really are these days. That's always pretty fun to see.
It's one thing to make these designs but it's another to sell them or buy them. Maybe it's the customer who is the real butt of the joke at the end of the day.
On a technical level, their watches are not bad at all, but they're still dress watches so they lose on WR, shock resistance, etc. And when you combine meme-tier designs that are basically jokes, good but notthat impressive engineering and their high prices, that does not make a very attractive offer.

I disagree. I've never been a fan of the tonneau cases, which is why I don't like the Mark II and up in general.

The beauty of the 'holy grail' is the complexity of the dial mixed in with the complexity of the case shape and design. The practicality of chronograph legibility is enhanced by the gradations on the outside of the dial combined with the exterior tachymetre (which is easier to read in lighting conditions instead of the interior one with a flat crystal on top of it). Then, low-light legibility is increased due to the lume for all hour markers (as opposed to Sinn's missing 12 and 3) and the design of the individual hands (the differentiation on the Sinn for chronograph hands vs. running time hands is unnecessary, and rather juvenile).

Finally, the grail has protected pushers and crown. In nearly every metric of comparison the Omega is better.

Regarding the height of the watch (as well as others), note that the Lemania 5100 is a tall movement like many of that era that are automatic winding chronographs. The Mark 3 and 4, as well as the Omega 125 are notoriously high, but it doesn't matter given the engineering of the movement.

The Lemania 5100 is one of the few chronographs from that era that has a minute counter as a hand in the center instead of a separate minute subdial. The airplane shaped hand moves along when the chronograph is running, which allows 'at-a-glance' ease when determining the minutes the chronograph is recording. Compared with a small subdial where you have to look carefully (usually graded to 30 minutes instead of an hour), the center chronograph minute hand is as easy as reading the watch normally.

I believe Damasko also uses a variant of the Lemania 5100 for their chronographs, also utilizing the center minute hand (DC-80).

The other hands are obvious: top register is 24 counter, subdial at 9 is the running seconds, and the subdial at 6 is the chronograph hour counter.

For legibility, this is easily the best variant, though difficult to buy at the moment.

>The beauty of the 'holy grail' is the complexity of the dial mixed in with the complexity of the case shape and design.
Which makes it too busy imo. The plain and "flat" front profile of the sinn/tutima/orfina/porsche cases keeps your eyes on the dial, where they should be.
>Then, low-light legibility is increased due to the lume for all hour markers (as opposed to Sinn's missing 12 and 3) and the design of the individual hands (the differentiation on the Sinn for chronograph hands vs. running time hands is unnecessary, and rather juvenile).
I don't understand how you can give the omega points for increased legibility and then say that the sinn is "juvenile" for increasing legibility. The use of colour is actually very helpful in discerning the time quickly (especially with such a busy dial), and a pop of orange just looks good.
>Finally, the grail has protected pushers and crown.
Ok you win this one.

>personal preference.
Yup, and to be honest it's been bothering me a bit. For instance, the technical achievement of the Omega 125 makes it a watch I 'should' buy post-haste. But I find it ugly as shit. It doesn't matter the historical significance. I just hate it. The Omega Mark II is a bargain for an 861 calibre. Again, I 'should' buy one, but it's ugly as shit and I'd never wear it. Hence the normal Speedy that's clearing customs as I type. Who knows, maybe I'll swing around to the design in time.
>too busy
It's funny. That's a critique I've read about as well, and indeed if you take the normal tonneau for this movement it does simplify issues. I think one YT vlogger described the case as 'retreating into the background' so that the dial information stood on its own, like a readout on a dashboard of an aircraft. You could say the same about the Flightmaster. Still, I like the matched complexity because to me that is part of the Speedy charm; that it's a tool watch with some elegance to it (specifically the turned lugs). This might be 'personal preference' too, so I can concede that rather easily.
>use of colour
Low light is a problem for orange unless they are lumed or are reactive to blacklighting. Orange is fantastic in water, but not as good as pure white in low light. The beauty to me of the Omega design is that it's white against black for everything, no compromise. I hate it when Omega does the same thing with their racing chronographs (there are always editions that have 'matched' chronograph hands, colours, and designs...I think even the 'First Omega In Space' edition has this with their spear style metal hands vs. chronograph white hands). Personal preference? Maybe...but in practice I've had bad luck with orange hands in low light.

And you shouldn't feel guilty for this. Watches are both fashion accessories and tools at the same time and failing at one means being half shit. Just look at richard mille.
>it's a tool watch with some elegance to it (specifically the turned lugs).
Which is why it's one of the best designed watches of all time. The way the beautiful turned lugs flow into the shoulders which protect the crown and pushers is the perfect meeting of form and function. I just think that they nailed the formula with the original.
>Low light is a problem for orange unless they are lumed or are reactive to blacklighting.
This is a fair point. I suppose it depends on which matters more to you - slightly increased legibility in the average use case vs squeezing out some more usability in poor conditions.

I do feel guilty though. For the same reason that I 'should' like Zeniths; their movement technology is well established, and their Defy Labs oscillator is a work of art. But their designs are odd to the point of being aesthetically displeasing to my eye, so I've never wanted one. I feel guilty about that as much as about the Omegas because quite frankly I feel like I'm 'missing' something about it.
>nailed the formula with the original
Hence why I have one (hopefully) clearing customs at the moment. I decided to just get a plain 1861 motmfm because the price was too good to pass up. A 69 cal. 321 can wait.
>legibility in average vs. poor conditions
For me if it's a 'tool' watch (by my own personal definition) then it must be legible in poor conditions (i.e a rainstorm at night, in a brothel, etc). If I wanted anything less, then precious metals and other finishing is okay (like Rolex or Grand Seiko).

Regarding the TV dial 4.5 - I've always hated that one too, but for an odd reason. I find the 'rounded square' that exists on this and the Patek Aquanaut to be visually disgusting, akin to people who have trypophobia. I NEED corners on a square, or I need a perfect circle if it's a circle. But this in-between thing makes my eye try to 'correct' it.

It doesn't stop the watch from being ruthlessly unique. However, the way that the tachymetre and dial markers have to adjust for the shape just make me hate it. Granted, it's rare and choice, especially if in great condition, and it's as 1970's as French porn in earthtones.

I do sometimes wonder if there will be a renaissance of 70's design in watches. Omega has been re-releasing new versions of some of their watches from that era (the new Mark II, etc.), but I am not honestly sure if these will catch on. The excess and unpredictability was a sign of the times, just like conservative minimalist 'future-looking' designs were common just before the turn of the 21st century.

Oris Calibre 400 - yes or no? It sounds really good, 120h power reserve, but it's still an Oris and it looks like a cheap mall Sub ripoff...

>> No.15686433

the watch is admittedly boring looking but seriously stop with the stupid sub comparison, it doesn't even look like one. The oris 400 is from scratch in house calibre development and more R&D than rolex ever did in the last 30 years. Im sure we will see more watches from them with the new calibre.

Is that line necessary or they want more lines on the dial like rolex and tudor diver watches?

I'd wait at the very least two or three years before buying into a watch with a newly released movement from a lower mid-range company that just got into making their calibres in-house out of necessity. All we have now is fancy press statements, by then we should have enough information about its performance, serviceability and its potential issues from unbiased sources. I'm expecting a catastrophe that will bring Oris down for good and prove the stupidity of insisting on in-house movements outside the luxury segment but who knows, I might be wrong.

firstly, oris is still semi luxury tier, same with longines and nomos

secondly why are you hoping that one of the few remaining, still accessible independents fail? An in house calibre is a good thing, do you expect them to be at the whims of the swatch group or whoever? especially now jn 2020 ETA movements cannot be exported anymore, Oris has no access to them even if they want to.

no, Oris is a heritage brand. They were huge in the 60s before the quartz crisis almost killed them. They are not like Raymond Weil or whatever. The oris 400 is not even their 1st inhouse calibre in recent decades. They bought themselves out from the swatch group 40 years ago, and them making their own calibres is just them returning to their old "position"

>oris is still semi luxury tier, same with longines and nomos
I like their heritage models and their artelier line is excellent value for the money but they are not anywhere near longines and nomos. Oris is the top offering of outer-city mall jewellers basically, notorious for their devaluation due to 30-60% grey market discounts off rrp even on newly released and limited edition models. Selling a watch that potentially loses 70% or more of its value the very minute the customer walks out the door is hardly the sign of a semi-luxury tier company.
>especially now jn 2020 ETA movements cannot be exported anymore
A problem solved by Sellita, a company with infinitely more funding and experience in fine mechanics and manufacturing that still struggled to make a reliable copy of 40+ years old ETA movements roughly on par with the original. Making an in-house calibre from scratch is a significantly more complex engineering and manufacturing task, especially given Oris' ambitions. An in-house calibre is a good thing as long as it's proven its long term reliability and serviceability.

Where's the anon that wanted a blue RO lookalike in last thread? Said he was looking into the Cadisen. I was about to recommend this one >>15686373 in blue: BEM-SL100D-2A
Only 50m WR, but it's a nice watch with the correct brush/polish ratio.
