Can i use hiking boots for the winter or is the breathable mesh a problem?

Depends on if they have a waterproof layer. Generally speaking generic hiking boots will be better than most, but you really want something with some insulation + waterproofing that was designed for cold weather. Don't need bean boots but Salomon makes plenty of cold weather shoes and there are plenty of milsurp boots- mainly Danners- if you're outside for a while and are more concerned with inclement conditions than comfort.

I live in Canada, its -20c and snowy for 8 months out of the year.
I have winter camped in and used these in over two feet of snow. Considering most of your guy’s winters are Larps I think these would do you just fine.

it's my 3 season boot, everything but summer. wear the right socks and it's warm indefinitely, i've had mine out below -30. you can step in craters full of water and keep your feet dry.

if you want any good climate/outdoors oriented gear/cloths just look up what gucci special forces units are issued. they do all the product testing so you don't have to.
