Lads, I just ordered my first proper watch. A Seiko 5 Sports SRPD73K2. Saw it reduced on amazon by 50€! Usually it's around 250€ but I bought it for 200€. Really pleased with that.

And with that I have started my watch collection. Current watches include a Casio F-91W and a Casio MTP-1303. I used to have more but didn't appreciate watches back then so I threw them away or lost them due to carelesness. I used to have a Casio A168, a G-Shock and two MQ-24s. cheap stuff really but still.

Thanks for the inspo!

I don't like the Santos because it's confused. It's supposed to be a tough version of an elegant watch but it ends up looking stupid. Too big, dumb industrial rivets that take away from the elegance of the dial and hands, and the iconic dial layout clash with its industrial pretensions. It's a mess. Not a fan of the crown guards either, they emphasize how the crown is not centered.
Really shitty watch design.

For most folks it's not about LARPing, defense contractor companies were something like the microbrands of the era, offering functional watches with solid specs and reliable workhorse movements at no-nonsense prices, and they are among the few companies making tasteful, non-oversized reissues faithful to the tool watch era original designs.

I don't give a shit about what other people like or don't like, everyone should buy what appeals to them and enjoy it.
You made a statement about watch collectors finding those aspects to be tacky and I gave you a valid reason why.
Watch makers who produce cheap watches trick novice watch buyers into thinking that they're getting a quality watch by making watches with skeleton dials, open hearts and exhibition case backs and then pretending that they are something special. In turn those things are seen as being cheap and tacky by people who actually know something about watches.

Well a mechanical watch is always going to lose or gain time and people have different standards of what is acceptable. If you want like COSC accuracy you will have to be very lucky, or good at regulating your own watch. If you just want it to be better than what you have I guess you could get a Hamilton field/pilot watch although those are bigger.
You could try simply upgrading the movement of your shitter but I don't know how that would work. The 6R15 or whatever that people meme on has the exact same dimensions as the 7S26 in your Seiko shitter, but it has more power reserve, is better regulated from the factory, and has hacking/hand wind. But it would require some additional work for the crown/stem. You could probably negotiate with a watch repair guy to do all this for you, but for how much, I don't know. You may be able to swap in a 4R36 but those are thicker so it might not go in the case or it will crush the hands against the crystal unless you were to get a custom domed sapphire.
Or you could just get a solar quartz which is much more accurate and you don't have to worry about it unless you want to change the battery, which is once every 10-15 years.

>> No.15661228

>>15661210
quartz is more durable and trusting than mechanical,a cheap quartz will have better aquraccy than the average cosc watch.

>> No.15661229

The Ecodrives can run for months without any exposure to sunlight, those electronics aren't as draining as you'd think. Heck, a simple battery-powered quartz movement can run for years before needing a new battery. Citizens are well-made watches.

Quartz-based movements are not only cheaper, they are also more reliable and more accurate than automatic movements. Automatics will always gain or lose time because of gravity acting upon the movement, shocks and vibrations, lubricants drying up, weardown of the movement pieces...

>> No.15661231

are you wearing it daily?
the 7s26 only has enough charge to last a day+ from full if its not worn

it is normal to lose +-20 secs in a day from a 7s26. If you are not wearing it constantly the lack of power in the mainspring would affect the accuracy too.
you can regulate it to be more accurate, its not hard.

>>15661215
the nh36a(4r36a) works for the SNZG, you just need to swap the movement holder.

>the 7s26 only has enough charge to last a day+ from full if its not worn
Yes, thing is sometimes it's good fora day+ but most times I have to shake the thing like an unwanted baby just to get it to keep time to the next day, wouldn't be a huge issue if I could just wind it myself.
>>15661215
sounds like a headache honestly, and the watchmen by me are thieves, they wanted 10$ a pop for fucking lug spring replacements that you can get 5 to a pack for 7 online. Hesaid fixing the mainspring and doing additional work would be something like 100$ but at that point I'd rather just spend the cash on a better watch.

So I'd be better off with electronic solar powered watches then. I was hoping there would be some ultra durable mechanical watch out there since I am a fan of the movement, just not a fan of having to constantly shake the fucking thing. Yeah, no way I could manage it, I used to try to sew and my hands would shake like crazy, too much force in it I think.

your issue seems very unique, maybe your amount of motion per day differs a lot?

if you just want a cheap beater, vostok komandirskies are auto+handwind for $60. Amphibias are slightly more expensive. You can turn the crown to wind them, no need to shake

normal quartz need their batteries changed every 3 years or so.
citizen ecodrives can go forever until the circuit fails as long so they get enough light.
mechanicals can run for decades if all is well but their performance will degrade.
mechanicals are more fragile to shock and constant jerking motion (ie working on machinery)

last thread was past bump limit when I replied so repost:
as a youth, I was a bit of a space case so in high school I realized I needed to consult the time to keep me on schedule. it wasn't until I was out of college that cell phones and (more importantly) the plans became cheap enough to undercut land-line prices and everyone switched. so I went to Target and got a casio. it was a great little watch. after I became a cell phone person, I still found it much easier to keep track of time by glancing at my wrist. as a rock and roller, I always had pieces of male jewelry on for funsies, so watches make sense in that regard. as a dude, machinery appeals to me, so another box checked.
years later, I found 4chan and years after that I found /wt/ and began to really learn and appreciate them on an enthusiast level.

You don't buy a Vostok to buy a classic looking watch (although the Classica is great), you buy them because they are indestructible, have fun extravagant designs and exhibit genius engineering that can drive Amphibias to 900+ Meters and 10+ years of service intervals. And of course don't forget the honest pricing.

You basically buy Vostok for the SOUL. Many watch brands have forgotten about that. Only Orient and Casio have kept their soul, the rest have lost it.
