>The Konstantin Chaykin Mars Conqueror Mk3 Fighter Project offers three indications: the main hands for local time, the UTC sub-dial at 12 o’clock for a second time zone, and the MCT, i.e., Mars time, as displayed on the 6 o’clock sub-dial.
>Responsible for all these is a combination of a 125-part module designed, manufactured, finished, and assembled entirely by the Konstantin Chaykin manufacture. Driving this module is a trusty ETA 2893-2, a slim yet powerful base caliber. The entire K.15-0 movement measures just 6.6mm-thick, with the module included, and offers 42 hours of power reserve, replenished through either the crown or the self-winding system. Speaking of crowns, as part of an invention of Konstantin Chaykin (just one of the 78 patented inventions of his career, patent number RU2518300), the Mars Conqueror watch uses two crowns: one for winding and adjusting the K.15-0 movement and the other to select between the functions of the former.

>The average duration of the Martian solar day (called “sol”) is approximately 24 hours, 39 minutes and 35.244 seconds, or 88775.244 seconds. The mean of Earth’s solar day is 24 hours or 86400.002 seconds. Based on calculations performed by Chaykin, it is possible to make the transition from the gear system of terrestrial time to the gear system of Mars time with the use of two wheels with 109 and 112 teeth. The 112/109 gear for Martian time indication is patented by Konstantin Chaykin. Thus, the duration of the Martian day with the use of this gear is 86400×112/109 = 88777.98 seconds, which is longer than the mean Martian solar day by just 2.7 seconds. That 2.7-second deviation should be considered precise, as it is less than the daily variation of a mechanical COSC chronometer, which is between -4 to +6 seconds a day. The 112/109 gear allows for the production of a technically correct synchronization of Mars and Earth time indications.

Is 400€ enough for a first automatic, assuming I want it to work for more than a year?

>> No.15654431

San Martin’s reply was about as useless as I expected, so I took off the back and somehow managed to unscrew and remove the automatic module.
I poked around a bit but didn’t remove anything else. Stuff is really small inside a watch!
With the back off, it seemed like the rotor wasn’t moving all that freely. I had to move the watch quite a bit to make it do a full rotation, but since this was my first time doing this, I didn’t really know what to expect. It hasn’t stopped in the six hours since, but I might have just wound it while fiddling with the insides, so we’ll see tomorrow.

“Oh friend, I thought there was no problem??
Maybe the rotor is tight?
Have you opened the watch?”

To be fair, even if they said I could just send it back to them I wouldn’t have bothered.
I happened to have bought a cheap kit some time ago because I had thoughts of opening a watch, but they can’t really expect their customers to fiddle with repairs themselves.

With the risk of celebrating prematurely:
My watch stopped at 6am this morning, which I will disregard since I have no idea how much or little I wound it while fiddling with it yesterday.

I then set the watch at 8:10am, taking care not to wind the crown, but only shaking it to get going. It is now 14:40pm and it's still ticking away, after 6+ hours of very sedentary excel work at home. I haven't been outside the apartment at all.

Thinking back on the "repair" yesterday, the o ring was stuck to the oil on the back of the caseback, somewhat folded up, or at least not fully circular. Of course, the action of removing the back could easily have been the reason, but there's surely a small chance that the o ring was loose to begin with, and stuck between the rotor and the back.
The crown action is less shit now too.
I'm cautiously optimistic.

As for removing links, just get one of those watch tool sets for like 10-15 bucks and save yourself the money and time. Usually the first adjustment job will not be the last, you may end up wearing your watch tighter or looser than originally intended.

I really like the Edifice watches. Sporty looks, good quality and they often end up in a sale for really cheap, don't feel bad about using mine at the workshop. Chrono hand might get wacked out of position (like in pic related) but that one can be readjusted.

If I spend 1k on any watch I will be lucky to get half my money back if I decide to sell it at any point. The most I have ever lost on a $10k or higher watch was ~20% but overall I've made much more money than I have lost on the watches I've sold.

Yeah, you should, see if you can get a decent price on a used one on chrono24 or whatever. Needs to be in yellow gold.
The tank is just such a beautiful watch.

a custom elephant leather strap from a random Vietnamese guy on ebay would provide quite a journey (how will it turn out aesthetics and quality-wise? will it slip through Canadian customs? will anon be able to face his guilty conscience?):

hear, hear.
I've said it before, but I've worked for some truly wealthy, old money, generations-rich people before. they have nice things but they never spent to impress other people. Mrs. A has inherited a literal fortune and rolled a Buick Regal wagon with wood paneling on the side. she disallowed her son to buy the BMW he wanted. they could easily afford it, but buying a teenager a bimmer that he was going to wrap around a tree for a first car was a stupid idea. Her brother inherited the law firm and had a nice watch, don't remember his car, but it was part of his lawyer uniform. spending that way made sense, if your profession expects bespoke suits and etc there's nothing wrong with that. his wife spent all her time with a dog rescue and again, had nice, quality stuff, but mostly wore things appropriate to screwing around with dogs all day unless she was going to dinner or something.
everything was very tasteful and often simple. these people all received a classical, humanities-heavy education and understood what it meant to be patrician.

as a youth, I was a bit of a space case so in high school I realized I needed to consult the time to keep me on schedule. it wasn't until I was out of college that cell phones and (more importantly) the plans became cheap enough to undercut land-line prices and everyone switched. so I went to Target and got a casio. it was a great little watch. after I became a cell phone person, I still found it much easier to keep track of time by glancing at my wrist. as a rock and roller, I always had pieces of male jewelry on for funsies, so watches make sense in that regard. as a dude, machinery appeals to me, so another box checked.
years later, I found 4chan and years after that I found /wt/ and began to really learn and appreciate them on an enthusiast level.
