but the hammy is not a bad choice, you can probably find them on jomashop or whatever for like $300 if you dig hard enough.

Thanks for the advice.
I was thinking of getting either an Orient Star SEL09004W0 (~400€) or a Seiko Presage SSA413J1 (~500€).
Are they worth the price?
Are Japanese automatics precise/reliable? Will they fit a wristlet?

yeah I'm finding the autos hover in that high $300s range when they come with a leather strap. I don't mind getting one without a stainless bracelet so long as the aftermarket options aren't complete shit like seiko bracelets. that's why I'm kinda straying away from an SNK809 or something like that, folded links that'll rip my hairs off sound like cancer and I'd feel retarded spending $120 or $150 on a nice stainless bracelet for it, at that point why not just get a real swiss watch

newer hamiltons have that h10 or w/e the fuck it's called and it's basically a modified ETA 2832 with lowered beatrate for extra power reserve, which is gay. lowering the beat rate is gay and it would be better to have 38 hours reserve and 28k vibrations beatrate than 80 hours and 21k, which is what the h10(or w/e) offers.
it's not like seiko's any better, with the same beatrate but less power reserve in their ubiquitous 4R series movements but seiko's movements have one additional benefit in that they are a bit more robust whereas ETAs don't like being handwound. that said, ETA 2832s are a proven and extremely reliable movement.
those are the key differences really.
people say the 6R movement on slightly higher end seikos is shitty but I can't remember why it's shitty.

ETA is perceived as "higher grade" than entry seikos or 8xxxx miyotas, mainly due to their swiss pedigree/higher bph. I dont know enough to tell you more about the minor details, maybe some guy with a better technical knowledge can fill you in. But there is nothing wrong at all with a 4r35/nh35 or whatever, it is very widely used for a reason-- reliable, accurate and dependable.

the real comparison vs an ETA2824 would be citizen's Miyota 9015, same beat rate.

mechanicals VS quartz is up to personal preference.
citizen makes good quartz.
timex quartz is bottom bin and their non chrono 3 handers also tick very loudly.

and of course, handwinding and hacking, the cheaper movements from seiko/citizen-miyota dont have those, you have to look up what the movement is.

hacking is whatever, you can pseudo "hack" a cheap movement by turning the crown the other way when setting the time, it will make the seconds hand stop for a while.

but handwinding is really useful to have. A pure automatic can get really annoying.

>> No.15651731

>>15651720
the problem is that the h10 movement has the same bph as seikoshitter movements, just higher power reserve. granted it's 2x as high but at the cost of beatrate, which is a shit tradeoff because people would rather have high beatrate and jack their watch off a couple minutes a day than have low beatrate and 9000 hours of reserve.

>> No.15651735

>>15651730
how out of date are you? everything basically has hacking and handwinding now, the 7s26 is not the standard anymore. and even if he wanted some old seiko5 that still uses that shit he could simply swap the movement out to a 4R for 40 bucks sourced

O. tristars and other budget orients with non hacking/handwind are still available.
cheap miyotas with the forementioned are still used in various places.

since anon was teaching me about lume a few threads back, I thought I'd do a lume battle between my old timex weekender and my new citizen chandler. I was saying that the citizen didn't seem to have better lume than the timex, so I decided to put them head to head and see exactly what was what.
here are the two watches for reference.
the weekender lists for like $45 I think but I paid $25 on ebay new in box.
the Chandler is $130 on jomashop and $165 on Amazon (but I paid $70 because prime day.)

I held my wrist up to the sun for a bit more than one minute.
I then went directly to a darkened room and quickly took this pic.

the citizen is definitely better, but it isn't particularly more intense. the baby blue is just a lighter color, so it's going to be brighter than a medium green. but the light intensity from both seemed reasonably equivalent.
more importantly, the lume is implemented better on the citizen. the lumed surfaces on the hands are much bigger than the timex, and there's a lot of lume on the dial of the citizen whereas the timex only has lumed hands. so, the citizen is lit up more due to coverage, but importantly, it contrasts sharply against the black dial whereas the weekender is less contrasty.
so, while the citizen lume is probably slightly better, it wins the battle due to implementation.

I then surfed the internet for an hour in my not-very-bright apartment, went to the same place, and took another pic.
the citizen's contrasting dial really helps significantly now. neither lume is very impressive at this point. even with the aforementioned advantages favoring the citizen, I'd still say the citizen's lume is probably still very slightly better in-and-of-itself.
is it $100+ better? not really. but anon was telling me that even modern expensive brands have lume that doesn't outperform budget models. so if that's true, maybe it doesn't matter anyhow.

entry seiko movement tolerances are +-25
anything below that is acceptable to them
usually its about half of that
these entry movements are made en masse and they are just briefly regulated on the factory floor
there is also a "settling in" period for a new watch, where the timekeeping will shift and hopefully improve

if its poorer above +-25 its covered by their warranty
you can send it back to their service centre but that will take weeks, up to like 2 months to come back to you, because there is a queue
