They don't have a screw down crown, so you can't wear it to dive or swim deeper elevation. Having to change batteries also suck cuz you have to reseal it properly and put the gasket back right. I'd rather just get a cheap Vostok.

no such thing anymore, not for these prices and especially not when everyone who would still need a tool watch now has computers that do absolutely everything, do it better and are ridiculously more versatile for the price
the only "tool watches" that still exist are G-Shocks because of how cheap they are and because they basically work as a tool array with several sensors

>If you take out the modern GS and credor movements, what is the best one seiko has made?
For vintage automatic, I'd say 5646 if it didn't have the annoying breaking quickset problem. So instead probably 5246 (which is objectively better, but I like the 56 design more). Both are slimmer and much more elegant in design than the high-end models of the 61 series. For vintage hand wind, the 4502.

For modern movements, the 4S15 and derivatives (which is just a resurrected 52XX). The 4L/6L movements look interesting, but I don't really know much about them. The 4R and 6R movements are ok, but in design they are essentially the same as 7S so a bit boring.

I usually search for good name non-Swiss historic brands on ebay and bidfun (http://www.ranfft.de/cgi-bin/bidfun.cgi?10&ranfft&a&1usau).). Their quality is on par with the mid to upper-mid range Swiss watches of the era but you don't pay a premium for the name, some also have in-house movements and unique designs as a plus. The French and the Germans also have nice collectors' communities if you speak some of the language.
Vintage French watches (non-cult model LIP, Sarda, Difor, pre-Seiko era Yema, Airain) are quite undervalued, with some luck you can even find a Besancon observatory "chronometre" for that price.
The same can be said of West German watches (non-cult model Junghans, Arctos, Laco, Stowa).
Smiths/Astral was an British brand that became collectible lately but is still affordable.
There was a 1960-'s 1970's Japanese brand named Mikado that assembled higher quality Swiss and West German movements, fun quirky shitters.
There are then the various Eastern Bloc, Soviet, Chinese, and Indian (HMT, Allwyn) watches but sadly there are many frankens and redials among those, so do your research and bid with caution.

Damaskos are functionally better as tool watches, though they're uglier.

The Tudor Pelagos is the best tool mechanical diver on the market.

The Rolex Daytona is probably the best tool mechanical chronograph as it has a free sprung balance and a vertical clutch, maximizing shock resistance.

The Seiko quartz Tunas are the best tool analogue quartz divers on the market.

Casio Oceanus models with the tough movement are the best general tool analogue quartz watches with their tough movements designed to re-align the hands after large shocks.

Magnetization is a problem of mechanical watches, and even there one that is blamed way too often for all kinds of problems it can't possibly cause, because people think they know something about watches just by parroting things they read somewhere.

If you had searched for "Omega" "551" or "Omega" "561" even one time you would have figured out what the deal is with the "yellow shit on the caseback" immediately.

You will learn far more, and far more quickly by searching for key terms about the vintage watch you are interested in and reading everything you can find than you will learn by asking one question at a time on a message board. For one thing, if you don't do your own reading you wont be in a position to evaluate whether the things people tell you on forums are even vaguely correct.

Also, I just image searched those pics and found the overpriced listing they are from. In general don't trust sellers who post washed out, shallow focus pictures like that because they could easily be concealing the state of the watch case and/or dial imperfections.

Here are some general tips:

1) Avoid vintage dealers unless you know very well what you are looking for and are prepared to pay a significant premium for something in A+ condition.

2) When evaluating online listings make sure images clearly show whether and to what extent the case has been polished, as polishing vintage watch cases destroys their lines and their value.

3) Avoid listings that don't show pictures of the movement.

4) Never believe anyone who tells you a watch was "recently serviced" and expect you will have to have it serviced as soon as you get it.

5) The best quick way to check if a dial/hand/case/movement combination is correct and that you aren't looking at a frankenwatch assembled from spare parts is to websearch the exact model and make sure there are others out there with identical specs.

6) Learn how to spot redials and avoid them like the plague.

7) Never EVER buy a vintage watch from India, anywhere in Asia besides Japan, or anywhere in Eastern Europe (unless its a Vostok from Russia and you really know your shit).

8) Specialty vintage watch forums are great resources for learning about vintage models.

Oh and make sure you know a reliable independent watchmaker who is familiar with working on vintage watches. NEVER send a vintage watch to the official service center. They have no experience working on vintage watches and are likely to destroy the originality by wantonly replacing parts.

About those old Omegas, the 551 and 561 are members of one of the better movement families of the pre-quartz era. The chronometer version at one point succeeded in having a million movements in a row pass chronometer certification.

Also I would specifically recommend the Omega vintage database and the Vintage Omega Forum as resources if you are interested in these kinds of watches.

I have been collecting for 7 years and have had a lot of watches. Don't think for a second if I'm paying thousands for a watch that I don't outright love the design and brand of the watch, I picked what I liked at a realistic price for 6 watches that I could buy without effecting other parts of my life.

Other watches I didn't go with: navitimer, santo, tanks, datejusts, explorer, 36mm daydate, panerai, Monaco, IWC portugieser / fliger, vintage omegas seamaster, polerouter, etc. There's a lot I didn't go with, I feel uses would have said the same thing whatever 6 watches I'd picked.

Coloured dials look like a joke, apart from blue. For me they never last more than a few months.
