15603727 No.15603727 [Reply] [Original]

I want some help in determining which of these Victorian Age shirts looks better, since I am looking to get into historical reenactment for the times roughly spanning 1840 through the 1880s, and if possible, I want to have at least one shirt which can stylistically fit in throughout most of that time period, despite some changes in fashions. This post starts with the first one, a shirt with relatively wide pleats, and this is also the only picture I have been able to find of it, but it can be custom made in any size I need, unlike similar offerings I have seen throughout the web.

This is not for sale, as it is an antique that presumably has storage in either a museum, or has a private ownership, but it is a nice example of one of these 19th century dress shirts.

That’s based on something from the 18th century, minus the full button placket and weird sleeves, which should just be more straight down than taken in. I do have an 18th century style shirt, which is pic-related, and the style still works for up to around the mid-19th century, also.

Just keep in mind that the 1840s was like the 1980s in terms of eccentric/big fashion and things generally calmed down as time went on, so I would recommend investing in at least two shirts to reflect the difference in bells and whistles between the 1840s and 1880s. You have some great options. What socieoeconomic class/profession are you larping? Those will have a big impact as well

I think I will probably represent somebody of middle class financial means and respectability. I want to be a man of letters, well-accustomed to reading and writing more extensively than the general population, which is to say for the occupation perhaps a schoolmaster, a preacher, an author, or a journalist, particularly located in the American West Coast frontier cities of California that were on their way to development, as I am thinking the California Gold Rush era would be a good time period to represent as my early period of choice, roughly late 1840s through mid-1850s. I could even be a prospector with working class elements if I buy appropriate pieces for that impression, as well as the tools. I have a light brown hat and a black hat that work for the mid-19th century period, and going onwards, as well. The black hat pictured in this post is very close to mine!
